Chants roster: How many were recruited by Clemson or SCar?

Jul 2, 2016, 6:51 AM

Were any of the guys on the team that just won it all out in Omaha recruited by Clemson or South Carolina? If so, which ones?

Don't know how hard we tried, but Kyle Skeels was on the radar, and Zack Hopeck the year before that.

Probably not many. Coastal looks like they've got a lot of players that weren't'recruited by Clemson.

I can tell you that Schools like Clemson and South Carolina have different recruiting philosophies than the Coastal Carolina's of the world. Clemson and South Carolina can get anybody they want (especially in-state). Coastal, College of Charleston, etc...don't usually beat the big-boys head to head.

That being said, Monte Lee had a reputation for recruiting "baseball players" at CofC. This means he has an eye for talent and recruits players that help you win baseball games vs. good looking athletes that are raw talents.

Big-time ACC/SEC schools that sign 11-13 players per year only need to hit on 4-5 of those "raw talents" per year to be great. Even if everybody else flames out and you ONLY develop 4-5 of those players per year you'll be making frequent trips to OMAHA.

Coastal, College of Charleston, etc....out of necessity have to recruit more "baseball players". Coastal definitely has employed a different recruiting philosophy than Clemson.

Personally, I'll take a position player who's 5'10 with a high baseball IQ who's mentally tough and can hit over a 6'1 player who isn't as resilient mentally but runs little faster or throws a little harder.

This is an interesting topic. Baseball recruiting is much different from sports like football due to scholarship imitations and MLB taking the bulk of top high school players, as well as any decent collegiate junior. Some schools have found loopholes in the rules and are able to get more players on financial aid. In recent years, Oregon State and now Coastal have won the CWS, so recruiting rankings aren't the tell all.

Trying to judge a recruit's potential for college baseball is tricky because the main measuring stick is what the pro scouts say. I know some of the services that rank baseball recruiting classes use draft analysis as their barometer. As others pointed out, you can get a kid who is raw but has great pro tools, but that doesn't always mean he is a better college prospect than a less gifted, but more polished kid. Our staff is real high on Brock Howard, but at 5'10" he didn't project to the MLB model.

I would say talent evaluation and development by the coaches is critical, but roster management is just as important. With college baseball rosters changing so much from year to year due to the draft and attrition, you always have to fill holes. Not to mention, you never know how many signees will opt for pro ball.

The thing that has really impressed me about Monte is the way he has quickly filled the gaps in our roster with "baseball players", and has also been able to land elite high school recruits. When it became clear C. Kieboom wasn't coming, they found the juco 3B Cromwell in California. Then he added the Jackson kid from PC. Last year he found Chris Williams at the last minute. Obviously landing a stud in M. Miller was lucky, but also shows Monte stays on top of things and can close the deal.
