Challenges continue on the recruiting trail

May 3, 2022, 11:24 AM

Another 1st level offer that we didn't even make a top list for. Justice Hayes.
https://n.rivals.com/news/rivals100-rb-justice-haynes-covers-top-four-schools

The recruiting world for us has completely changed overnight. A 10-win "off" season, geez really? Yep, new coordinators but every top team has regular turnover. I think it boils down to two things, we have been very slow to evolve our recruiting strategy (but there has been lots of change lately, summer officials and 2024 offers already going out) and we underestimated or completely missed how NIL was going to work.

I had to say it but I am afraid our recruiting status is back to 2015 times and we need to do it the old fashioned way...we got to win, especially in 2022. This won't be easy. I will say though, I choose integrity over wins but that is easy to say right now...

Go Tigers!

This upcoming season may make or break us IMO.............

May 3, 2022, 11:30 AM

as we've got to get back to the Final Four and the playoffs. We're already off the radar so much after last season that we can't afford another "off" year.

And you're right - our recruiting hasn't stayed up with the times, as much as Dabo doesn't like the NIL and TP. We're missing out on too many top recruits.

This fall will say it all.

We can't compete with the money and never will...

May 3, 2022, 11:45 AM

So I think we should all get used to going to to the Tommy Bowden type days until there is more control/rules of over the portal and NIL.

I agree with you about this season being a make it or break it type year. Failure to adjust to the portal is killing us. I know Dabo wants to remain loyal to his players but every other team is filling holes with immediate impact players.

We have several holes this year. We needed to bring in an immediate impact IOL, WR, and LB.

Bama brought in the top RB, the top CB, two of the top WRs, one of the top OL. I don't see how we are expected to compete with that.

And have higher rated players up and down the roster... So what gives. One would think if anyone had an available next man up, it'd be Bama.

Re: This upcoming season may make or break us IMO.............

May 3, 2022, 2:53 PM

They have plenty of players that weren't ready. Clemson rolled into last year with several offensive linemen that weren't ready to compete at an elite level. The portal would have fixed that. We desperately needed a WR that was effective in the screen game, which the portal would have fixed.

Alabama understands this and they bring in the best players from high school and from the portal. We could compete without the portal. However, they are going to sign a better class every year while bringing in instant impact players from the portal as well. We can't compete with that.

Agree. Making the playoffs this year will make all the difference in turning recruiting back to an upward trend.

The sky is definitely falling. Might as well cancel football, move soccer and lacrosse into the stadium. Maybe have outdoor gymnastics as well?

Iptay????

May 3, 2022, 10:48 PM

Gave them thousands for years. What did I get? 3 seats (2 rows apart) they refused to put next to each other, a tailgating spot turned into a softball field and an idol threat of losing my status when I pulled my funding back during covid/2020.

Screw Iptay.

we seem to of not learned our lesson from last year either.
Still sitting at just 81 offers when there are 3/4 star guys out there who grew up liking Clemson and wont commit to us either because we go "ALL IN" on a select number of guys and they feel disrespected or have moved on.

look at the scholarship numbers of other schools compared to ours
Notre Dame 145
Georgia 217
Arkansas 329
Ohio State 128
Tennessee 406
and on and on
Clemson sits at 81 scholarship offers as of today

I'm not sure we underestimated or misinterpreted how the NIL

May 3, 2022, 12:01 PM

would work...it's just more a matter of we don't have the payroll to match the other schools that these prospects are choosing. And for you nitpickers saying "the schools aren't involved/putting them on payroll, the NILs are", get the he-- out of here. If you don't think the schools and the money men are working hand in hand on these purchases, and they are PURCHASES, of these high school players you're out of your mind.

It started by Clemson/Dabo not addressing the transfers....

May 3, 2022, 12:22 PM

properly. Since then, NIL & recruiting "strategy" (ie not oversigning and/or being too selective/stingy w/ offers.......until it comes to walk-ons). Handling of Transfers/transfer portal has been where dabo has been slow/reluctant/opposed to changing.

Dabo could've overcome the transfer portal issues earlier, but I'm not sure Dabo/Clemson can overcome the lucrative NIL landscape.............only about 7-10 Programs can and the rest will be left in the dust, unless something unforeseen changes very quickly.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That, plus not even considering outside candidates for

May 3, 2022, 2:32 PM

both offensive and defensive coordinator vacancies is also part of the problem.

Most people here will just blame NIL, because it makes it seem like our football program is a victim. But in reality, there have been some significant missteps the last few years by our staff.

To repeat past posts

May 3, 2022, 2:56 PM

Clemson was not the best team in the country in 2016. We had the best player - Deshaun Watson who slayed a much better Bama team in the championship game with heart, skill and fearlessness. Not luck - skill and leadership but Bama was better at 15-16 positions.

In 2018, Clemson was the top team in the country. Power Rangers, WR's, young TL16 and ETN.

After 2018, the coaching staff lost some aggressiveness. Covid happened. ESPN and Chicago/Big 10 media went after Clemson and Dabo hard. It's the cyclical nature of the beast.

But Tnet posters are absolutely right. 2022 is huge. DJ and the o-line can implode the program with a residual impact on 2023-25. Momentum is a factor. IMHO Dabo has re-engaged with the coaching changes. 2022 will be a big litmus test, and Clemson coaches can control and enhance the program's future by putting our best players and not just our most experienced on the field. As it now stands pre-season, NCSU has the top QB and the top all-around team in the ACC. Clemson needs to bounce back and smack down the Pack, the Irish and every other opponent on the schedule.

A drunk will run a STOP sign, but a stoner will wait for it to turn green.

We have seldom signed these types of RB. Why would you

May 3, 2022, 3:17 PM

think that would suddenly change.

Even when we do manage to occasionally sign one, they turn out to be quitters!

And remember, we have won national titles *without* guys like this.

Why would you doubt that we still can?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: We have seldom signed these types of RB. Why would you

May 4, 2022, 1:11 AM

Okay, if you say. Shipley, Spiller, Feaster, Bowman all ranked higher than Haynes. Sure, Feaster and Bowman left but we still got them. Heck Etienne was a top 15 back. We are going to find out real quick if it really matters. Keep in might our lone take last year didn't have one other Power 5 offer and it appears we are at risk of having the same situation last year.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Every school in the country has offered the RBs we are

May 4, 2022, 11:05 AM

Probably not getting.

We will still get a couple of excellent RBs this cycle.

They may not be the ones we’ve offered to begin with.

But the will be guys we can win championships with.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You're constantly defending coaches, recruiting, at nauseam

May 4, 2022, 1:23 AM [ in reply to We have seldom signed these types of RB. Why would you ]

I would love for you to acknowledge just one problem ever.

But you won't.

The RB situation is dire whether you want to admit it or not.

2024 purple level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I try to speak realistically while others insist on dreaming

May 4, 2022, 10:59 AM

Realistically, we have won titles without consistently fielding 5-star RBs. That’s a fact.

Hoping to start getting the backs who have always gone to Georgia, etc. is not particularly realistic and not particularly helpful to the discussion.

I do not think the RB situation is “dire” at this point. I believe in our coaches because they’ve given me reason to believe in them.

If you choose to doubt them without strong evidence ... go for it.

We will sign a couple of excellent RBs even though they will not be from among the group most highly regarded by the recruiting analysts at the moment.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

bc they are getting big $$$ to play, we can't keep up with

May 4, 2022, 7:14 AM

that.....welcome to the "new" Clemson football world.
