CFP history

looking at the rankings with 3 games to play.
only 4 times has a team been ranked below #6 in the CFP poll with a possible 3 games to play and managed to make it into the CFP
2014 Ohio State went from #8 to #4 2015 Michigan State went from #13 to #3 , Oklahoma went from #12 to #4 2019 Oklahoma went from #10 to #4
so it is possible but rare.

Another way to look at it is that it has happened 4 times in the previous 8-year history of the CFP rankings, which implies that maybe it is not really that rare.
To answer your other question, 15-teams in the last 3 seasons alone have been ranked in the final CFP poll before the playoffs with 2 losses or more. A team has been ranked #5 or #6 in all of those seasons with 2 losses, and a 3-loss Wisconsin team was also ranked in the Top 10 of a final CFP poll.
If you meant with 3 polls remaining, yes it also happened in all those years, but obviously not with as many total teams and never did a 2-loss team rank as high as #5 in that same timeframe. The highest ranking was #8. I didn't look earlier than 2019 in either case.
Also, someone mentioned that all 4 of those teams with big jumps got eviscerated, but 2014 Ohio State WON the playoff with their 3rd string QB, and 2019 Oklahoma lost in OT. The other two were indeed blowouts.

So what you're saying is it's happened 4 out of 8 years. Those are pretty good odds that it will happen again. Go Tigers!!! Beat Miami!!!

A lot of mileage is had with the "in the history of the CFP" bit, when the CFP isn't that old.

4 times in 8 years is not particularly rare.
Much likelier than Brad Brownell making the tourney.

That is not accurate.
2015 Week 11: Michigan State (9-1) was ranked 9th 2015 Week 12: Michigan State (10-1) was ranked 5th 2015 Week 13: Michigan State (11-1) was ranked 5th 2015 Week 14: Michigan State (12-1) was ranked 3rd
They went from 9 to 3, not 13 to 3.
Similarly: 2014, Ohio State went from 6 to 4, not 8 to 4. 2015, Oklahoma went from 7 to 4, not 12 to 4. 2019, Oklahoma went from 9 to 4, not 10 to 4.
No team have ever come from outside the top 9 this late in the season. We would tie the record if we do it.

All three appeared to have radical improvement...

during the last three games. I appreciate everyone believing Clemson can make this list but not without seeing a change at the QB position. Either DJ has to make great leaps of progression starting Saturday then improve the following game and again get even better in the CCG.
OR, we need to change starting QBs which I think will not happen. What's most likely is Dabo figuring out a way to take advantage of the weakness of our opponents and create the illusion that covers up the fact that we're cripple at the QB position.
I believe that is our best shot if we continue to start DJ.
