Cedric Baxter Jr RB 2023

Anybody know anything about how hard we are recruiting him? I know Florida is after him, but his film looks strong. 6’1” 215 lbs as a Junior and can FLY. I’d love for us to land this one and I know he is on our radar.
I know a lot of folks on here are unhappy with our RB recruiting since Spiller took over, but Spiller (like all of our coaches) recruits a Region, not just RBs. With CJ28 being from Florida, I’d like to think he can pull some good RBs from down there.

Please show me where i stated that he “Only recruited the FL region…”
Also, I posted this before the article showed up with him and the VA RB.

I can assure you that Spiller is very much involved in the recruitment of every RB target

I agree that he is involved, but even Venables recruited offensive players when he was here.

That doesn't really matter. Spiller is the one responsible for recruiting our RB targets. He's the only that has to build a quality relationship with them. Not signing an elite RB last year made sense. What elite RB wants to sit behind Pace, Shipley, and Mafah for a couple of years? Spiller can get a pass for missing on all of his targets last year.
However, that is not the case this year. Spiller has to close the deal on an elite RB. We can't roll into 2023 with only Shipley and Mafah as our only legitimate options. Keith Adams Jr and Jarvis Green (who we likely sign this year) can't be our 3rd and 4th options. We would be one injury away from a below average RB recruit taking snaps for us.

So far CJ is zero for forever. Maybe he is learning on the job or perhaps just a run of bad luck or some other variable. Regardless he needs to prove himself soon as being a great player does not always translate into being a great coach/recruiter. I am not saying CJ is bad at either but so far the results of his recruiting are abysmal.

I agree that our RB recruiting was horrible last year. It’s hard to sign good RBs when you bring in Shipley and Mafah in the same class. As a recruit, you go meet all the people at your position on scholarship, then they assign a player to “host” you behind the scenes. RB is a position that kids want to get on the field early and go to the league early. It is also the most injured/shortest tenured career on a football team. I hope we sign a big name in 2023, and if we don’t we need to sign at least 2 studs in 2024.

I get that its hard to sign an elite back with three great backs already on the roster (although Bama and UGA seem to be able to do it every year). My knock on CJ is that we did not have a fall back guy who at least had a P5 offer. We dropped all the way to a legacy who had no rating and not a single P5 offer. Fast forward to this year and we are in the same position with the young man from Dutch Fork. Maybe he has been overlooked or under the radar but the chances that he was overlook by every single P5 school AND he will be great at Clemson are highly unlikely. I am ok with taking the Dutch Fork guy but when you reach you had better take two (even if a 3* guy with P5 offers) to mitigate the risk.

What are you saying? You don't want 3 star RBs that weren't ranked in the top 1000? Hunter Renfrow was a walk-on and now he's a Pro-Bowler.

We won national championships with a bunch of 3 stars named James Skalski, Baylon Spector, Kendall Joseph, Isaiah Simmons, K'Von Wallace, Tanner Muse, Tremayne Anchrum, Ryan Carter, Gage Cervenka, Jordan Leggett, etc.

It seems awful early to be so concerned about "missing" on RB for 2023 already. Many of these kids don't even get rated at all until after their senior season starts, and that is still 5 months away!
If Clemson does offer Greene, I suspect you will quickly see a dozen other schools follow with offers also, and he will then move up the rankings. It happened with the RB that Georgia signed last year, as well as with Etienne.
Please wake me up if we are still looking for a RB that has a rating in early 2023 for the 2023 class.

Unfortunately I don’t think we have a great shot.
Looks like we will offer Jarvis Greene from DF

We have offered 3 backs and were never in it for Young or Baxter. Haynes was always going to be tough as he is a UGA legacy. RB's, QB's and TE's in most cases are a one take per cycle. Especially with RB's and TE's we have to make a few more early offers so we don't rely on fallbacks and deep reaches. Hopefully CJ is going to make some adjustments to his recruiting strategies.
Love what he has done so far with our RB room but he wasn't the lead recruiter for Shipley, Mafah or Pace.
