Casual fans and Alums

Sep 14, 2022, 6:32 PM

Do you think that alumni post differently and view the program differently than the casual fan? Is the fan who has simply decided to have a rooting interest more critical the way an NFL fan might be?

According to a few on here, if you are an alum, you are a lower form of life.

perspective than the casual sports fan.

This does not in any way make me a better fan than someone who does not have a Clemson diploma.

It just makes it more likely that I will not see the football team as the only thing that Clemson represents.

And that’s an important distinction.

Not a Dabo fan,

Not a football fan,

Not even a concrete canoe fan.

I pull for Clemson in all things: athletic, academic- all of it. Through the good times and not so good I want the best for my alma mater

Very well said. I’m a 1984 grad and my daughter is a 2017 grad. I agree that the biggest difference is alums will tend to support everything about Clemson, not just the football team. My time spent at Clemson opened a lot of doors for me and helped prepare me for a successful career and life in general. I met the girl who would become my wife and mother of my children at Clemson. It is way more than just a good football team.

I did not go to Clemson, but I definitely support everything Clemson. Many great friends went to Clemson so I credit them for everything else other than football that rubbed off on me. I’m proud of it.

but my family comes from Central S.C. so I grew up attending Clemson games and probably have a closer interest to Tiger athletics than most alumni.

I think it’s about the personality of the individual. Those that can’t help but yell at the sky seem to be more critical here. At times, I share their opinions, but I’m not going to post it on the nets because it’s stupid.

I would say so. A casual fan really has no deep rooted love for the program, nor an earned vested interest. Hopefully alumni have more love for the program, because they feel more a part of it. JMO

I disagree. A non-alum often has a

greater interest in all things Clemson, especially if they grew up as a fan.

It is akin to a fan of an NFL team growing up and becoming a rabid fan vs. a player who plays for that NFL team. After their career is over they probably pull for the team less than the long time fan.

Re: Casual fans and Alums

I think it all depends on how interested you are in Clemson, its sports, and football itself. I've always lived 40 minutes away from the stadium/campus & started getting into Clemson football (or even football itself) when Kyle Parker was the quarterback. I remember loving him because he also played baseball & at the time I was playing a lot of baseball. None of my family has ever attended Clemson, but my family became fans when my mom moved to Piedmont SC and was forced to pick a side and chose Clemson. probably the best decision she's ever made

I'd say that even though I have no close ties to the university other than some close friends attending right now, I probably follow Clemson football and its sports more than the average fan.

In 2015, both the panthers and Clemson were doing amazing and eventually ended up in the Superbowl/National Championship. Knew I liked Clemson more because I cared a lot less about the Panthers losing the Superbowl compared to Clemson losing the National Championship. At the time I thought it was the only shot Clemson would get to win it in a long time, so I cried that night before having to wake up and go to school the next day.

loved cam newton at the time though

Not sure what I’m classified as. I’m not a casual fan nor am I an alumni. Currently paying for one of my kids to go to college here so Clemson as a school is getting our cash.

I do view Clemson differently than some especially since my son is actively involved in other non sports things on campus especially due to his very specific major and specialty.

Not only are you a parent of a future alumnus / alumna but it sounds like shelling out significant cash.

As a result - and since I am an alumnus and I can - I am bestowing upon you “Probationary Alumni True Fan” status. All Alumni can bestow this status to non-alumni. Not sure why it is not done more often.

Regardless, let me be the first to congratulate you.

In a lot of ways

Sep 14, 2022, 8:38 PM

Clemson is a small school with a small number of alumnae as compared with a lot of other universities. That has changed considerably in recent years but we are still behind a lot of the schools that we compete with. When I was a student in the 60’s there was only 5000 enrolled. That has REALLY changed .... along with a huge co ed presence. Clemson thrives on its non alumni fan base and it certainly wouldn’t be where it is without them. With that said it is very important that the non alumni base become involved in supporting the university in every way possible including money donations. All the great things that we all love about Clemson comes with a price. It has become difficult for me as an iPTAY rep to find new donors because every potential member wants great seating and great parking for football. You already know how easy “that ain’t” to provide. It’s a great problem to have never the less.
So, if you are “ just a fan” ” you are vital to all the successes that Clemson has athletically, academically, socially and every other way. Clemson isn’t ever going downhill in any way. Do what you can to assure that never happens. If it sitting on the sofa at home and screaming at the tv .... Do it.

iPTAY was formed by donations, not from alumni, but from farmers and textile workers who depended on Clemson for guidance in their professions. Ten dollars was not a small amount of money in the 30’s . But great men were willing to help my school succeed because it was great to be a Clemson Man .... and it still is. GO TIGERS

Re: Casual fans and Alums

What is a casual fan? I graduated from another college but had season tickets for 46 years so I have paid Clemson and IPTAY thousands and thousands of dollars. Our daughters both graduated from Clemson so we also paid thousands of dollars for their education. Casual is most definitely not the right word to describe a Clemson fan.

Not an alum.
Married to it.

Alls I can say is I'd dern sure rather see programs like Clemson win than the joyless Bamas or soulless Ohio States of the world.

And I always have a ball hittimg up Littlejohn for hoops in the long winter months. Win or lose, it's a good time.

Bottomline is Clemson's just a special place.

One thing I learned while at CU is that without our non-Alum fans, our activities...academically and athletically...would be virtually non-existent.

Therefore, I highly value ALL those who support my Alma Mater, thank them profusely and encourage their continued support.
