Can't help but wonder if the next big ol' freight train...

Oct 30, 2019, 8:45 PM

...barreling down the NCAA football litigation track will be the easing of eligibility requirements for the NFL draft? The "pay for endorsements, likeness, etc" college brouhaha isn't exactly related, but I think very few of us thought we'd ever see this day coming either.

As it stands now, the NFL and the Players Union both generally agree that player safety is the primary reason for the current restrictions. But that may not stop a few 5* recruits or high-profile freshman/sophomore college players and their lawyers trying their luck in court to force the issue. The times have clearly changed.

Add in that MLB can draft a 16 year old high schooler and the NBA is advocating going back to the 18 year old age limit from the current "one and done" 19 year old limit in their next CBA, and I can't help but believe this is coming. It's only a few months ago that some pundits were saying that TL should be allowed to enter the NFL draft if he wanted. In the current environment, it doesn't seem that far-fetched anymore.

Most 18 or 19 year old's bodies would not fair well in NFL

I linebacker in his mid to late 20s would kill a RB or WR right out of high school or a year or two of college.

Seems like common sense...

...but I'm afraid common sense is under-valued nowadays.

As former NY Giants GM George Young once said: "When they say it's not about the money.....it's all about the money."

Moab, unfortunately I think the prefix un needs to be added to the common. Same with courtesy.

How would that be an NCAA issue? The NFL is responsible for their age limit.***

You are correct. It would boil down to an NFL...

...litigation issue. I guess my point is how it would affect college football if it were to come to pass.

These new rules will definitely make it more appealing for someone to sit out a year or two and live on their "likeness" money once they establish themselves as a high NFL draft pick. No need for Trevor to risk getting hurt next season if he can pocket six figures working out and living off his now suddenly completely legal cash flow.

Do it like baseball. Two choices; The player can go the NFL right out of high school or 3 out from high school. That way the NCAA rules would not taking away the option/ability/opportunity for the player to earn money.

To the original post - I think that litigation has come and gone with a RB from Ohio St a few years back. It is how we got the three year rule if I remember correctly.

I don’t think there is a high school player that could go to the pros and make a team.

Players Union will not go for it. That would mean current players would lose their jobs a year earlier to younger rookies.
