Can't find workers

May 5, 2021, 1:37 PM

The majority of restaurants in our area cannot find enough staff to have more that half their dining rooms open including popular places such Longhorns and Chili's. A local tire store in business for over 30 years shuttered it's doors for lack of finding employee's. Our neighborhood Publix can't find workers. I'm not sure why Uncle Joe keeps wanting to give away all our taxpayers money to all the hardworking American's suffering so much through the pandemic but I'm sure he has his reasons.

That is this administrations way of thinking. Does not matter what it does to the country as long as we keep giving out handouts to maintain a vote. Same as the crisis at the border. Let them enter freely because they will vote for us. Sold your country so you can remain in power. There are some very sick people in D.C. right now on both sides of the aisle.

I’d feel bad for them if they paid above starvation/poverty wages to a livable wage, but I doubt it. Restaurants don’t pay crap, so I don’t blame anybody who doesn’t want to go back to it.

Why would any 1 want to get paid in crap?

Bull. I worked at a restaurant for 2 1/2 years while I was being educated. I did so because I wanted the opportunity to make as much as I could based on my level of service as opposed to being paid eight dollars an hour at an afterschool program. Averaged about $20 an hour. I couldn’t of made that anywhere else.

let's go ahead and pay those poor restaurant workers $15.00 an hour. For a forty hour week, that equates to $600.00 per week.

Would you consider that a more fair and reasonable wage rate?

Guess what, that would still be less than the Biden Administration is paying people to sit at home on their a$$es.

The Esso has had to cut their menu and I believe are no longer serving their meat and three during the week because they can’t find kitchen staff. They’ve been trying to hire for a long time.
Local restaurant in my hometown had to close for a while because they couldn’t find enough cooks or waiting staff to relieve the employees who’d been working non-stop.

Re: Can't find workers

May 5, 2021, 2:00 PM

I feel for the middle managers.

I was stuck trying to hire drivers at a place that would only offer non-benefit part-time at often about 30% under market - which was between $4-$8 less per hour. Sure, the "owners" were aware but didn't care. That was my problem. Worse, I could hire someone with a sketch background that wanted the work but, you know "driving" means clean record, etc. Anyone with a decent background want to make more than $50-70 a day when rent is $1000 plus a month for a 1br.

And I worked at an Applebees. $2.13 plus "tipshare". I made more money "selling" to "other" the servers to do their clean/up/close up for the shift. Guess where the tipshare went. Worked construction after that.

As far as I am concerned, if you can't find someone to work, then you are not paying the right wage.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

This is the reason I did not work for Aramark after Clemson

May 5, 2021, 3:12 PM

I worked for them while I was at Clemson both at Harcombe and at the Canteen. I got tired of dealing with minimum wage employees that would never show up. No restaurant is going to pay a "living wage" to their employees. That is because no one wants to pay $25 for a hamburger and fries. Restaurant work is for people before they move to a career. You couldn't pay me enough to be a manager for a fast food place.

Bull.

We are offering right now $3-$5 above the average wage for a warehouse workers and/or truck drivers for our business, and have had several tell us straight up they can make more staying home. Heck, they take home more money than I do and I've been here 30 years and make a good living. The only difference is I have to pay taxes on mine and work for it.

Its all candy and nuts now while they are giving away (our) free money, but like everything else in life, there will be a string attached and my guess is folks won't like what's at he other end of the string. Shiny trinkets that seem to come from nowhere generally have a hook buried deep inside the disguise that by the time you see it, it's too late.

Every business in town, not just restaurants have a help wanted sign out, and one of them can find employees that want to work for a living. Why should they?

Re: Can't find workers

May 5, 2021, 4:00 PM

Welp, that is a hokie education for ya ;)

Unemployment benefits do pay taxes on anything over about $10K so that statement about paying taxes is not accurate. Even then, folks are bring in 'good money" from social services. I think the max allotment that one can draw is dependent on the state. In NC it is about $650 a week but only for 26 weeks I think so folks do run out. That works out to be $16ish an our. Yeah, my old driving job to fill paid less.

Next, depending on your local market, you *could* be paying more than average but also not be paying enough. In my area, WNC, experienced diesel mechanics are in short supply. Pay is slightly higher than average... BUT cost of living is higher and thus down the hill in Greensboro, they pay slightly less but the take-home is better. So for many, you can't hire based on "averages". I don't know your industry and practice so I can comment on it (won't call bull on a hokie because it is all turkey to me), but you do have a lot of folks in spots like mine where, sure, we were above "minimum" and not bad so pay across the org's chart for hourly pay, but we were 30% below what other places were offering drivers, only offered part time etc. I would constantly get poached after investing in bringing someone in and training them .

The "giving away" free money isn't a good idea. Unemployment isn't free but it most definitely is a "tip-share".

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Well, since you brought education into it...

May 6, 2021, 8:38 AM

Is there something about yours that can't comprehend "above average"? What, did you think I meant above average for somewhere other than where I am? Are you really that big of an idiot?

And here, standard unemployment is around $400 weekly. Add to that extended benefits worked into our "relief" plans, extra unemployment specifically said not to be taxable from those same relief plans, and unemployed folks in Virginia are taking home $800=$1000 weekly. Have been since the first stimulus.

Yeah, it will eventually run out, but now the DC folks are talking about a "jobs program" which is politico speak for "Let's spend some more money that we can distribute among bureaucrats for nothing".

How about stop the extra benefits and give people some incentive to go back to work? Use the money earmarked for their jobs program to reward the folks who have worked every day of this pandemic at their place of business as essential employees to keep the country running for the last 15 months.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Well, since you brought education into it...

May 6, 2021, 2:15 PM

Dude, seriously? I will cut you some slack being a hokie and such that ad hominem stuff, cut it out.

"Average" can and is a very "tricky" concept as it could both accurately or inaccurately describe a condition. Normally, I look to use "median" more so than average or make a direct % comparison. For example, if you have 10 jobs, 3 are paying $100 and seven are paying $10, average is $37 ... but if there is a shorage, then $37 isn't going to cut it IF the $100 are hiring.

Because in Virginia, there is a big difference between "Wiffle" Va as "Dumfrees" as how far as one dollar goes. You can buy large home down in Bland for what multi-roommate supported rent might be in Alexandria. So depending on where you are, cost of living, etc the stimulus and whatever unemployment benefits could be both a lot or a little. Same goes for one's wage. Saying you are paying above "average" really depends on your sample. Paying "average" in my area is actually "underpaying" for cost of living. Lets just say that you are paying 15/h and the state average is $14... ok, but if your 3 closest competitors are pay $18, "above average" don't mean squat.

As far as I see it, giving cash to people and giving it to corporations is the same darn thing. Welfare state. Now, if that spending was to build libraries, schools, train stations, fine. However, the least previous rounds of the Stimulus has basically been a big income-redistribution scheme from urban area into rural areas ... because cost of living.

It ain't going to beaurocrats, I can tell you that. They have seen several years of salary "freezes" I can tell you that and as cost rise, they have actually been losing a bit of money. But giving it "back" to the working is just as fiscally absurd as giving it back to the unemployed. Both is "waste" and productivity has 0% to do with being in person or not.

How about we cut the payout, spend revenue on physical infrastructure and stop giving handout to X Y Z because the "do" or "don't do" something.

It will start getting better in SC soon (I hope). The unemployment commission is requiring weekly job searches again plus a lot that were laid off are no longer eligible for benefits (over a year). Also there’s a PUA requirement that is due today that may knock a lot of people off unemployment.

I know people begging for employees. Being able to breathe is the main job requirement.

Some, even went (back) to school or decided that a trade wasn't so bad after all... but don't let the data that the initial unemployment claims are virtually unchanged with miniscule movements since May 2020, and the weekly unemployment claims in decline in that same period.

2% of the population being out of work and living on stimulus checks is not breaking the economy nor is it the fault of any administration since the Depression, and all biden did was keep the ball rolling that trump jumpstarted... c'mon man, that fact didn't slide by you... LOL

By the way, you got a stimulus check too or more if you're married and have dependents... send it back if it's a drain on the economy... LOL

Also, I didn’t get any stimulus check. Most small business owners didn’t, if they don’t cheat on their taxes.

There’s around 120,000 unemployed in SC and around 85,000 job openings.

I don't know if this has anything to do with the original subject line, but For over forty years I was a machine control electrician. I wrote PLC programs, did my drawings, and because I didn't really like anyone else doing my panels, I wired them myself. When the crap hit the fan, I was the one called to get out of bed, at all times of the night to get things up and running again. I was very good at my job, and I enjoyed it for the most part. Our company was bought out about three years before I retired and they squeezed us older folks out. It didn't mean a hill of beans to them, what my level of experience or knowledge were because their intentions were to close the doors on our specific plant, anyway and I guess they felt like they didn't need us. Well, taking care of grand kids and sleeping late were ok for a while, but soon I got a hankering to go back to work. I've got a pretty good resume, but it seems like no one is interested in hiring an old goat. Insurances issues, I guess. Well, I start looking around and see that Wal-Mart is hiring third shift stockers, so I think I can handle that. Not much money, and a lot harder work than I'm used to, but what the heck. It's not like I'm looking for a career. Before I could apply, my whole family comes down with COVID. I've been over it for quite some time now, but I've developed back issues that may, or may not be related to COVID, I don't know. Anyway, heavy lifting and extensive time on my feet are out of the question right now. hopefully, I'll get my back issues resolved and can get a job stocking shelves at Wally World. Like I said; I don't know what this has to do with the original thread, but it's my unemployment story.

Re: Can't find workers

May 6, 2021, 8:56 AM

This issue is REAL. It doesn't have to get political. Last year, there was a real need for the bonus checks and enhanced unemployment benefits since jurisdictions shut down industries, putting people back to work. The fact is the country is returning to business and these enhanced benefits should have been allowed to expire in March. The extension through September is going to continue to cause tremendous problems for businesses this summer as people (arguably logically) would rather stay home and watch Netflix and earn enough money to survive vs returning to work. It's economics 101.

Wait until there is a gas shortage this summer due to the shortage of truck drivers and let's gage people's opinions at that point.
