Can we stop trying to blame play calling for our offensive

Oct 18, 2016, 8:48 AM

troubles?

406.8 (30TH) yards per game 146.5 rush 261.8 pass against quality defenses like BC (4th), Louisville (11th), NC Stata (16th), Aubarn (30th)

We dropped 532 on BC, 401 on Louisville, 495 on NC State and they're still all top 16.

The problem isn't play calling, it is drops, inconsistent accuracy in the throws, and TURNOVERS!!!!!!!

The run plays are crap. Those rushing numbers are entirely skewed because of the BC and SC state games. Last weekend we had 378 in the air and 117 on the ground after 39 touches and using 5 backs. If it's not the offensive line and it's not the play calling, what is it? We have only rushed for more than 150 yards in 2 of 7 games. And if our stable of running backs is just as talented as our receiver corps, there's no excuse for it. Our running playbook has to contain more than halfback dive left, halfback dive right, QB read-option draw. It just has to. Alabama, Ohio State, both averaging 300 yards rushing per game. Michigan? 270. We aren't even ranked in the top 50 in rushing offense with 146.5 yards per game. Why debate it? Between the turnovers, dropped passes, and poor rushing performance, we have not yet played to our potential. And despite the wins thus far, that fact can and will catch up to us.

where's the jet sweep and the quick pass/screen to the side? not sure i saw either on saturday? those are usually effective for us.. esp the screen pass to the side..

Without Peake out there blocking at the perimeter and the way Leggett's been blocking all year, I don't see how we can successfully run a jet sweep honestly. And basically every screen I've seen this year has resulted in a tackle for loss. Our receivers and tight ends need to learn how to block. The only receivers I've seen set great blocks on the perimeter or downfield all season thus far are hunter renfrow and cornell powell. Why a 230lb mike williams or 250lb leggett can't push these cornerbacks around is beyond me.

How about a true zone read?

Oct 18, 2016, 10:44 AM [ in reply to Re: Can we stop trying to blame play calling for our offensive ]

It seems as though the keep or give are predetermined.

If not the the incorrect read is being made way too often. It tough to run the ball in the middle in this offense when you don't hold the DE with the zone read and you don't press the perimeter with the jet sweeps.

It is also very tough to run those plays if your WR and TE are blocking well on the perimeter

It is that, but it is also play calling. It's pretty predictable when everyone knows 1st and 10 and the play is a run up the middle....nearly every time. They need to mix it up more to keep defenses on their heels. Last year, you'd see a 1st and 10 and Watson would throw a long bomb. This year...run up the middle....run up the middle...oh, and run up the middle.

I agree. And on 3rd & short? You guessed it - quarterback draw. That attempt on the goal line last weekend was embarrassing. I'd like to see more misdirection, pre-snap motion added to our scheme. Those formations that scream "screen pass" arent fooling anyone without Chad Morris pre-snap trickery. He was masterful at setting Sammy up for the screen. But the ones we are calling this year? Predictable. We keep saying the plays are "vanilla by design" but here we are in week 8 and nothing has changed. Maybe it is the play calling that's making the offensive line look so bad in the run game. Just maybe. :)

Anyone notice that when DW4 runs the QB draw he takes the snap and just freezes and then runs instead of simulating a drop back

I think that is making it much easier to diagnose

I recorded the game... After going back and watching, our back up running backs need to have better vision... There were quite a few times where the O Line was pushing the pile in one direction and Wayne Train reads that and cuts it back in the other direction... Our back up running backs run right into the pile... They need to cut it back where the hole is.... Just my opinion....

we have played seven games now.......

The upcoming opponents have plenty of film to watch. Opposing coaches easily can see our tendencies in each situation..time to alter the play calling and make life a little more difficult for FSU and Pitt etc. I believe our coaches know how to coach. Let's see if they do!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No.. this is tnet. ..everything we say is right.

Everything the coaches say is wrong.

I am sorry but when you have the best QB and best WRs in the nation you do not throw a screen on 3rd and 2.

Lack of blocking on the perimeter cancels out screens and jet sweeps... should earn a trip to the bench imo. Without those pieces offense is predictable. Missing on long balls/posts doesn't help either. The jumbo package should be used on any critical short yardage situation, it has not been stopped yet and a naked boot would be a nice wrinkle.
