Can we agree that bulletin board material isn't a thing?

Dec 28, 2016, 8:28 AM

If JT at Ohio state throws for 400 yards and 3 TDs against us, it's not because of Johnson's comments. This is a playoff game, if you need any extra motivation your team already lost.

As far as what Johnson said, what was wrong with it? I understand half the people on here would be offended about a similar comment, but it's true. He plays against Watson in practice and played against Lamar Jackson....

It's no different when an Ohio state fan says they played against better defenses than ours.

The world is full of butthurt people.

I think it is a thing. Now, I don't think it moves a player's barometer 20%. Because you are correct in saying that these four teams are already giving 110% to win these games; there is very little else they can do.

That said, these are 18-23 yo and things like this are absolutely motivational tools. Think about all the crazy uniform combos we're seeing these days. Why? Because they play a factor (small, to be sure) in recruiting players. The recruits like it so it's a trend that will keep on happening.

Likewise, coaches know that if they can get just 1% more effort, or focus, or....whatever, they will do anything for that 1%. To me this game is a coinflip - I think any honest fan would probably say on paper it looks that way. Let's just assume that's true - any coach worth his weight would take this comment and use it for all it's worth, in the hope it might tip the scales just that 1 measly percent.

TL;DR - yes, it is a thing, no, it's not a BIG thing, but coaches will do anything for a win so why not?

True. I saw it posted on a bulletin board

TU 74...

Although I agree with both previous points. My disagreement is I don't like our players doing it.

It could also help us, JT might feel like he has to "prove" he is a great qb.

Dec 28, 2016, 8:59 AM [ in reply to Re: Can we agree that bulletin board material isn't a thing? ]

This could lead to him going away from their game plan. He becomes pass happy and their offense suffers because of it.

Like Dabo said big boy now go back it up. I am not a fan of running your mouth before games but I don't think what he said was really trash talk. But when you do I personally think it gives the other team an edge to prove a point. But what he said was true JT is not known for his passing ability. Not a big deal when you speak the truth like the ##### talking trash about how they played better QB's than DW was just plain stupid. However our secondary has so many penalties this year I am afraid they may throw the ball up and hope for PI calls. Butthurt has to be the most overused word today.

Go Tigers!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

My thought has always been to let your play do the talking.

Dec 28, 2016, 8:53 AM

What does it really accomplish to talk negatively about your opponent? Nothing gained at all except opening yourself to a plateful of crow if you fail. Quiet confidence is what champions are made of, not mouth.

It's different for different people, that's your opinion. There have been many loud and outgoing champions in the sports world

I don't know if any of you have been in a college locker room lately but there haven't been bulletin boards in 15 years. As far as trash talk before the games, it might matter for the first few plays. After that, it never crosses anyone's mind what has been said in some pointless interview before the games.

Can we agree that if any OSU player said that about any one

of our players, that this board would be in full-on Pitchfork Ben mode?
