Can someone explain why having college students on campus

Aug 5, 2020, 11:10 AM

is riskier than having college students "staying at home" doing online coursework?

Seems like if you're on campus, then you're generally around other college students. It's not like professors are within 6 feet of the students.

If you're "at home" then you are much more likely to be around your parents, grandparents, etc. Seems like the more containment, the better.

starting classes online. How is that going to work when you are knee deep in classwork/assignments? Friday move in date or the weekend? Hopefully not a home game weekend, that would be a disaster.....but I suppose with limited attendance, might not be impossible. Lots of moving parts to this thing. UGH!

I have good news for you!

1) Less than 10% of college students will be "knee deep" in homework in the first month of class. If he is, it's likely due to procrastination

2) Home football weekends aren't going to be anything like those in the past. It'll be just like any other Saturday. Maybe like a Saturday when there's a basketball game. Like, "Hmm, is something going on these weekend? Oh yeah, there's a game tonight."

If you're at home, you're typically around the same 2-3 people every day. If you're on campus, you're coming into close contact with dozens, if not hundreds of students a day.

While college kids are obviously less likely to be hospitalized by COVID, they have a much greater chance of spreading COVID much quicker

The guys who have opted out said that they did it to not spread it to their loved ones.

If you're at college, you aren't bringing it home to your loved ones.

If at home, they may be around their loved ones, but also less likely to engage in behavior that puts them at more risk of catching and thus spreading it.

I live and work in Clemson in healthcare, this (city of) Clemson Family is at risk from the abrupt increase in student population. It would be fine if they didn't encounter anyone outside of campus, but of course they will come into contact with faculty, staff, people at the grocery store, employees at business, etc. That's how the initial local surge started in Clemson. Unfortunately it really just means those at risk have to be even more diligent.

That said, we are in a catch-22 situation, because this town depends on that student population and football/sports for revenue. Its kind of a lose-lose situation. We can't afford (financially) to not have them, but we can afford (public health) to have them.

Well, those college students have to eat, some have to ride the buses or go to convenience stores for gas, they have to do laundry, or go to Walmart,or Ingles for groceries,so they will come into a lot more contact than other students or professors.

Yes, but not after being on a campus with thousands of other people each day.

She said you now have to make reservations to visit their dining halls, and max capacity is 18 on their buses.

This is going to be a mess when students actually return.

Because while on campus they will congregate in large groups, will be attending large parties, some will be using communal restrooms with many other students, etc. That increases the risk of transmission and young people can contract, spread, and die from COVID.

Clemson students will be living in their off campus apartments and having parties just like normal. Except that they will actually have much more time on their hands because they do not have to actually go to classes and labs.

College students arent going to stay on campus though

Dorm rooms, cafeterias, events, parties, classrooms (often 100s or more in a tiny area), you are interacting with hundreds of other people/families per day. Same reason meningitis etc is higher.
