Can CBB survive a losing season and 1-and-done in ACCT?

Feb 7, 2022, 5:10 PM

Both of those are entirely possible.

I highly doubt it.***

Yes he will. Neff has said he’s doing fine with all the off the court aspects of running the program.

Saddest thing is his buyout makes it more of a "business decision" concerning dollars and cents in the present, rather than the overall good of the program and the future of our program. Heck, I want us to have a relevant Basketball program that really can compete at the level our football team competes. Not some, "oh well, we're not one of the 'Blue Bloods' so it's okay to be mediocre mentality we've lived with for so long.

Re: I highly doubt it.***

Feb 7, 2022, 9:05 PM

It's actually cheaper to let him go now...

His buyout for the first year, which dates from May 1, 2021 to April 30, 2022, would pay him $50,000 per month for whatever months remain until 2026. That totals about $2.75 million, as of Oct 2021.

The per-month costs increase from $50,000, to $65,000, to $85,000, to $125,000, and, finally, $250,000 in each year of the contract. So it’s $3.12 million with 48 months remaining. The buyout is $3 million at 12 months.

Do we possibly look into a Go Fund Me project to help alleviate the stress of cost on the athletic department to get this accomplished.

Yes. Winning is not a requirement or Brad would have been gone a long time ago.

Tough position for a new AD...

Feb 7, 2022, 5:21 PM

but I hope he has the dogma to do what should have done seven years ago.

Balls! Yep, that's the word we were looking for.

Yes, though a losing season seems unlikely at this point.

Feb 7, 2022, 5:26 PM

5-5 over the last 10 puts us at 17-15 overall and 9-12 in the ACC.

Feb 7, 2022, 5:29 PM

yeah he would be back I believe no doubt with that type of record.

I think a brand new AD even one very familiar with the program is not going to make that move until a year in. maybe Brad doesn't want to come back. Brad seems really down in his interviews lately, but probably just reading him wrong. If it gets really bad down the stretch it might happen. I feel as long as they are around .500 he will be back.

How has he survived 12+ years of stagnate play and less fan support due to his draining the oxygen out of the room? Not sure what else he can do to get fired.

Feb 7, 2022, 7:08 PM

hope not. It's a bit disturbing that the new AD was all gaga over him the other day. Like he was thrilled and thought Brownell was the greatest thing since sliced bread. Unless he makes it to the NCAA, I think we need to send him on his way and get someone else.

I hope he is done already. He is a rich man and will be fine. Clemson basketball needs to move on though. We have nothing to lose.

It needs to happen but it wont happen until supporter$ and bot decide to move our program up a notch or 2.

Re: Can CBB survive a losing season and 1-and-done in ACCT?

Feb 7, 2022, 8:23 PM

Since Neff had oversight of basketball as an assistant AD, I suspect he played a role in the contract extension. Unless the Tigers don’t win another game, he will be back. Brownell was rooting for Neff to get the promotion, so you know he’s thinking he’s safe for now.

Re: Can CBB survive a losing season and 1-and-done in ACCT?

Feb 7, 2022, 8:43 PM

Reading through that extension though it only added a year to the end without upping the buyout, maybe minimal. It looked like a recruiting message kind of deal leaving four years in place ahead. It didn't up our ante really. He's in as tenuous a spot this season as he was last. In the past he's delivered in these situations though so kind of believing we pull some crazy stuff out here down the stretch.
