Can anyone explain the change in play calling this year on O

Dec 12, 2013, 11:59 PM

I dont want to complain or go against Coach Morris, I love him and everything he brings to Clemson.

But i couldnt help but notice alot was different this year. The Jet sweep to Watkins or the like of someone like Hopper or Brooks was nonexistant compared to recent years. Yet we Played actioned the jet sweep and the double play action with RB and WR like defenses were suppose to bite on it. Sometimes they did alot of times they didnt.

Also it seemed like things got too complex from a play calling and personel standpoint. Everyone wants to say how... dissapointing, our run game was this year. yet we did nothing to help it by abandoning the jet sweep, overloading the backfield with WAY TOO MANY rbs, fbs, and tes. with no real receiving threat at TE its pretty easy to assume you double cover the WRs on the outside and send everybody else on a blitz. thats a no brainer. Also where they heck was Zac Brooks more. That guy is a stud! nothing against Mcdowell who was great at times. that guy has a quick 2-3 step move best in the country! but hes not a feature back and no top end speed. not like brooks that is.

I feel we just tried way too hard when it came to calling our run plays and deciding what personel to use in run and play action circumstances

TE position which seals the edge on that play was lacking as

far as blockers this year. Cooper was the only sound blocker and he was never 100%

USC fan (I start most of my posts with that statement)

Clemson does this because they have elite speed on the corners of the offense. It pulls the safeties up toward the line of scrimmage in help with run defense.

By doing this, it opens up the middle of the field (behind those creeping safeties).

And it clears the back edge out for a wheel pattern to one of your fast RBs (you guys are blessed to have 3 RBs that would start on most teams).

Also, if the defense does not seal the back edge, Tajh can burn you with a run to daylight...if you creep to close to Tajh, he can burn you with a toss over your head to that wheel-route RB I spoke of earlier.

Also, if the defense does not react to Watkins blistering to the long side of the field...you can always just give it to him for an easy first down (he seems to always get at least 10 yards on that play).

Essentially this play creates a second-guessing defense which Tajh Boyd preys upon. Look for Clemson to put up serious points against a TERRIBLE OSU defense with these types of plays.
