Can any of you Georgia Liberals explain to me

Mar 28, 2021, 7:49 AM

How the new GA voting bill is “Jim Crow v2.0” the media keeps dubbing it as is?

The biggest thing people are complaining about is food or water. Once again the media is full of lies. You can’t hand out food or water within 150’ of polling locations. This is because political organizations were doing it in 2020. You know all the signs that don’t allow anyone to campaign within 150’ of the poll? Same rules now apply so that no organization can provide a ‘bribe.’ If the lines are longer than 150’ from the building, then food/water could be handed out. If you can’t survive a 150’ line without food or water, you may want to reconsider what you’re doing in life.

The next thing is the ID requirement. The law actually says Absentee ballots must have your name, date of birth, DL number OR state ID number OR last 4 of your SS on them. Oh the horrors! Don’t make me put the last of my SS number. Does anyone know a person who doesn’t have a Driver’s license OR Government ID OR the last 4 of a SS number?

While it’s not perfect, here are the other highlights I can find:

1 - The law keeps absentee ballots available to anyone who wants one.
2 - The law adds an additional Saturday to vote.
3 - The law makes Sunday voting available for the first time ever.
4 - The law now requires secure absentee ballot boxes with the minimum amount as 1 per county, 1 per 100,000 voters, or 1 per early voting precinct. if you actually read the text of the law, this impacts rural counties the most, which are red, since they’ll likely only get 1 box on their county.
5 - The secure voter boxes move from outside government property to inside a building.
6 - Unsolicited 3rd party absentee ballot forms must be noted “Unofficial” and marked with what organization is sending it.
7 - State and local governments can no longer send unsolicited absentee ballots.
9 - Early voting hours also get extended. They now must be at least 9-5 or as long as 7-7.
10 - The Secretary of State would no longer be in charge. This is a change since Abrams cried foul after she lost. A non-partisan chair would be appointed and the chair would not be allowed to have been a candidate, participate in a political party organization or campaign or made campaign contributions for two years prior to being appointed.
11 - There are a bunch of changes with times. For instance absentee ballots can now only be requested 11 weeks early. When final ballots can be dropped off also changes. Most of this is due to insuring everything is in on time. There were lots of late ballots in 2020 that were nullified. While the times are shorter, nothing is unreasonable IMHO. I’ve always voted day of the election and sometimes waited minutes, sometimes hours. If you can mail in your absentee ballot in 2-1/2 months then that’s on you.
12 - The law also changes a bunch of processing/counting times. This stops the 2am voter dumps from happening and also shortens the time to certify elections. This should help streamline when GA declares winners. The automatic recount requirements are still there.

So please explain how this is so terrible?

It’s terrible for them because it’s a step toward securing a fair election for all.

so it is fair that some people stand in line for several hours, and others for 20 minutes? Being that this law was for fairness, I assume this was addressed in the bill? They are going to open MORE polling locations in areas where there are long lines?

Re: Can any of you Georgia Liberals explain to me

Mar 29, 2021, 8:52 AM

This is from State Rep Tom Kirby.

Line 268 – 373 is where we say, “We’ve had enough of the same counties being on the news, every election with the same problems.” I know you have seen them yourself, as you have called and asked me, “What is going on there?” The County Board of Elections run the elections in Georgia. What this section says, if they consistently year after year have the same issues, then the State Board of Elections will be able to step in and fix them. Last October, the news showed and interviewed people standing in lines for hours to vote during early voting. The secretary of State kept sending messages, “We have more voting machines available, open up more precincts and or request more machines and we will get them to you. In fact 6 counties in Georgia did request and receive more machines, but none of them were the counties you saw on the news. It is attributed mostly to Einstein, “Doing the same thing the same way and expecting different results is insanity.” Here again, this is where problems voting have been identifies and gives an avenue to make it better and easier for all to vote.

One last thing related to “water”

Mar 28, 2021, 7:58 AM

The law actually says you cannot hand out “money or gifts, including, but not limited to, food and drink...”

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Lol. Just look at anything that makes voting harder.

Mar 28, 2021, 8:08 AM

Like is there any good reason not to drop ballots off at a local library? Is there any reason not to give food and water to people waiting in line? Why can't you drop ballots off two days prior to the election when you obviously can't mail it in? The most obvious thing about the law that let's everyone know it has nothing to do with free and fair elections is giving the state legislature more power...all because Brad Rafflesburger wouldn't "find more republican ballots".

Nobody would give a #### about your dumb voter ID laws if they were part of legislation that made voting easier.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Food and drink is just like anything else....

Mar 28, 2021, 8:18 AM

You can’t campaign within 150’ of a polling location. That’s been law forever. In 2020 political groups were handing out food and water within that 150’. It’s the same reason you can’t take a government official out for lunch and pay for their lunch. In the eyes of .Gov, that’s a bribe.

If 2 days is the issue, what prevented you from dropping off your ballot the other 75 days? What is a reasonable amount of time in your opinion?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Lol, I wasn't going to vote Democrat then they gave me a

Mar 28, 2021, 8:28 AM

Bottle of water. It's totally believable and supported by evidence. Also, once voting starts, you should be able to drop off your ballot up until they're counted.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Also, what made it harder to vote?

Mar 28, 2021, 8:27 AM [ in reply to Lol. Just look at anything that makes voting harder. ]

I don’t really see any unreasonable burden on voting. In-person voting got expanded both in time and days. Anyone can request an absentee ballot. The only ‘burden’ I could see is the 11 week timeframe. Is that really a burden? 11 weeks to get your ballot turned in.

in GA anyone can request an absentee ballot. That’s not the case in liberal New York. In NY you must prove you wont be able to physically vote on Election Day. Do you think New York voting laws are Jim Crowesque?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Also, what made it harder to vote?

Mar 28, 2021, 8:58 AM

I gave you very specific examples. Respond to those.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Under the new Ga rules voting is very easy....

Mar 28, 2021, 9:09 AM [ in reply to Lol. Just look at anything that makes voting harder. ]

and any claim to the contrary is simply bs.

Absentee ballots that can be mailed in or dropped off in person. 3 weeks of early in person voting including 2 weekend days. And regular in person voting on election day.

If you don't vote in Ga it's your fault.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

There are indeed parts of the law that are good

Mar 28, 2021, 9:27 AM

But let's not pretend that there aren't parts of the law that are blatantly stupid.

I don't think anything you listed is stupid...

Mar 28, 2021, 9:40 AM

The drop box closure close to election day feeds into the ballot security and handling changes that were made. Disagreeing with it doesn't make it stupid.

The not allowing groups to hand out things in voting lines certainly doesn't seem stupid to me.

I need to study the issue of ga legislature being able to over turn county election officials more.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It's not exactly a secret

Mar 28, 2021, 9:51 AM

that things like long lines disproportionately affect poor people. Show me any evidence that handing out food and water to people waiting to vote is a bad thing. There's also no evidence that GA needs four days to collect and count ballots from drop boxes. Again, why can't you drop your ballot off at a public library? Opportunity costs are real.

In the end, my guess is that this backfires and basically double dares Georgia citizens to come out and vote Democrat.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

County election commissions are allowed to...

Mar 29, 2021, 8:05 AM

have water available for people waiting in lines...you know that, right?

Also, you know the organization and number of polling places are run on the county level, right?

I need to look into it more to refresh my memory, but I'm pretty sure most instances of these "6 hour lines" where on the first day of early voting where the early voting in these counties only happened in 1 or 2 central offices. I believe most of the metro Atlanta counties typically have Democrat control of the county commission...I know Fulton and Dekalb certainly are. I don't get the correlation many seem to make between the GOP control at the state level and the long (or perceived long) wait time at the polls in urban black-majority districts. There are all kind of reports showing how rural majority white counties/precincts have less wait time than urban majority black precincts and people seem to call out the state republicans for doing this on purpose...meanwhile these majority black counties are normally controlled by the democrat party.

As to the location of the ballot drop boxes, I assume it is to maintain ballot security/integrity. I don't see the problem with it at all. If you want to vote absentee, then use the mail. If you want to make sure it gets handed in in person, then bring it to a drop box...which is available during early voting, which includes at least 2 weekend days.

Mar 29, 2021, 8:59 AM [ in reply to It's not exactly a secret ]

When the biggest issue of the bill is not being able to hand out food and water at the polls, then you know it’s a good bill.

Here’s a thought....if your fat ads can’t go without food and water while in line then maybe bring a bottle of water and a granola bar with you.

Yeah why not just have someone just fill out the forms for you and all you have to do is sign it?

Is that the kind of easy voting you are looking for?

Re: Can any of you Georgia Liberals explain to me

Mar 28, 2021, 8:30 AM

The thing that really frightens me is that the Georgia state legislature itself can now directly meddle with the results if they don't like them.

All they now have to do is just vote down any result they don't like - on a county-by-county basis. They can simply refuse to certify any county's result.

You take one look at that and you already know exactly where that is going.

Basically they just voted themselves the right to directly override the voters, after already showing they believed obviously lies about voting fraud. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see exactly what the state legislators are going to do when the results don't go their way next time, ZJ.

That isn't democracy. You can't vote yourself the right to disregard the voters.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

So previously the Secretary of State oversaw this....

Mar 28, 2021, 8:50 AM

The SoS is an elected position which is partisan.

The new board is headed by a ‘non-partisan’ leader and then 4 more appointed member by the House, Senate, Dems, and Republicans.

I don’t really see this new format being any worse than our current format. The Republican SoS certified all results even when Trump pulled his BS.

Abrams cried foul when she lost to Kemp who was SoS at the time. So GA ditched that and tried to put the clause in to keep the Election chair out of politics for at least 2 years. Not perfect, but I don’t think it’s this slam dunk for corruption. Politics on all levels has the potential. I can’t see them just canceling a county just because it doesn’t align with the party. Even when Dems get power (which they will in GA as more and more Yankees move in) I don’t see it being an issue.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don’t see an issue with either method....

Mar 28, 2021, 9:03 AM

In 2018 Abrams lost to Kemp. Abrams argued that no elected official should oversee the results. The partisanship of the elected position invites corruption.

So this bill changes that to 5 appointed people with the chair being out of politics for at least 2 years.

I guess in this scenario it’s ###### if you do, ###### if you don’t.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I don’t see an issue with either method....

Mar 28, 2021, 10:08 AM

My understanding is that the legislature itself and vote on to certify or not certify each individual county.

That invites some...hijinks, especially in disputed elections.

IMO it's past time to clean up voter rolls in all states. Get the dead and the dogs off the lists and start numbering the ballots, one for each registered voter. And to quote ESEcPN you had one job to do so dont screw up or lose your ballot because it';s the only one you get.
