An Open Letter To Dan Radakovich

Mr. Dan Radakovich
Director of Athletics
Clemson University Athletic Department
Jervey Athletic Center
P.O Box 31
Clemson, SC 29633-0031

Mr. Radakovich:

First, permit me to congratulate you, generally, for maintaining Clemson University athletics at a high level within the Atlantic Coast Conference, as well as nationally. Moreover, your Department’s emphasis on and demonstrated success in supporting student-athletes’ academic performance has resulted in graduation rates that are the envy of the vast majority of Division I institutions.

Having said that, we all know that the primary engine that drives world-class athletics facilities and academic programs, which attract the best recruits (to Clemson), is money … lots of money! For an athletic program to rise to and continue functioning at a high level, every funding opportunity must be explored and, if positive and legal, utilized. One such revenue source that Clemson has cultivated in recent years is its relationship with Nike … and it is this relationship, which you and Coach Swinney extolled when it was extended, that is the focal point of this letter.

Nike’s CEO John Donahoe recently stated that, “Nike is a brand that is of China and for China.” Surely, you are aware that numerous reports have provided compelling evidence that Nike’s operations in China enjoy cheap labor, in part subsidized by “forced labor” provided by the country’s Muslim Uyghurs held in “re-education camps” by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). While giving lip service to its concerns about “forced labor” in China, Nike actually lobbied against congressional legislation (Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act) that would restrict the flow of imported items suspected of involving “forced labor.” Nike has clearly decided to overlook this immutable flaw of the CCP going forward … in the interest of sales and profits. On the other hand, Nike opts to be an outspoken, “woke” corporation in the U.S. and puts its brand name and financial support behind highly controversial social justice initiatives such as the “1619 project,” “critical race theory” and @Black Lives Matter (which is rooted in Marxism).

Not only is Nike’s double standard absolutely shameful, but the Clemson University Athletic Department is a beneficiary of its “blood money!” While I don’t necessarily expect 18-21 year old student-athletes to be fully aware of Nike abetting China in its crimes against humanity, your administration has an obligation to acknowledge these offenses and educate Clemson’s student-athletes about real systemic racism and ethnic cleansing. (I’m certain that if you contact the appropriate officials at CampaignForUyghurs.org they would assist with an informative presentation for your staff and students.) As you know, last year many of the football players participated in public protests that brought even more attention to the police shootings of unarmed black men and other perceived injustices toward people of color, including convincing your administration to paint supportive messages along the sidelines and in the end zones, as well as printing helmet stickers. For purposes of consistency and human decency, you should encourage your student-athletes to send similar messages objecting to Nike’s involvement with the CCP and its use of “forced labor” in possibly manufacturing the very shoes and clothing that they wear, displaying the Nike logo. And perhaps slogans such as “Free the Uyghurs” or “No Slave Labor” could be painted in the end zones, and an image of the CCP flag with a large circle and diagonal slash through it would make an appropriate helmet sticker.

Since many of your student-athletes have already demonstrated their concerns for human rights, their exposure to the treatment of Uyghurs in China could further enlighten them with respect to how the line between the oppressed and the oppressors is oftentimes blurred … by who benefits from the oppression.

Thank you for your consideration.

Cordially,

Paul Gilbert, B Arch ’71, MCRP ‘73

Priorities in this country almost always seem to be in lockstep with the almighty dollar. Our morals are very hypocritical at times. I would love for Clemson to switch to an American company for its team gear. Unfortunately the dollar will almost always win.

While we are worried about a baker not baking a cake for a homosexual couple or people not using appropriate pronouns for “non-binary” gender, people in other parts of the word are working for a minimum wage of 15$ a day or perhaps a week in some cases (not 15 an hour to make sure my fries are salted at McDonald’s. Outside of human trafficking this is one of the most evil things that is happening today but we are distracted by fashion, our first world problems, and there are layers between us and these workers which help with plausible deniability I suppose

This country is too busy figuring out new ways to hate each other. We can’t be distracted by human rights crimes outside of our neat little bubble.

And that, there in, lies the problem. There ain’t enough products being made in the USA anymore. Since the late 70s maybe earlier when the country switched from a manufacturing industry to a service industry, this country hasn’t produced more than it’s imported.

very well written, but the overall lack of perspective by the author is laughable. And the intent here is to push a domestic political agenda under the guise of "concern for forced labor conditions in China". Had he/she just stuck to the original point, I imagine this might have actually made it to someone's desk.

Jul 11, 2021, 8:01 PM [ in reply to Re: Came across this yesterday ... makes a point! ]

I disagree with you completely, Tigerbalm. It seems to me that the writer makes only one point! Hypocrisy! If you are concerned about human rights and can march, put messages on the field and wear helmet stickers, then, for GOD's sake, at least acknowledge that you are benefitting from others being oppressed so that you get free shoes and gear ... plus receive hard cash. The only real point I see is made at the end of the piece, where the lines between the oppressed and the oppressors depends on who benefits from the oppression. If the writer wanted to make the piece political, then immediately after the above point being made, he would have added one more word ... "Checkmate!" Methinks you're over-thinking this, but then, as you know, you are the smartest man on Tnet.

they would not waste their time on this thread. But I am smarter than you if you can not understand the fault in logic on full display by the author of what started off as a well-written and seemingly sincere letter. The logic being that every single person in this country is a fugging hypocrite and beneficiary of forced labor conditions in developing nations, our standard of living depends on this. His/her rant was little more than a clumsy trojan horse for his/ her dissatisfaction with Clemson University's endorsement of social reform efforts in this country, and if you can not see that, well....

You view everything through the lens of a paranoid progressive, who just doesn't understand what hypocrisy and consistency mean. In your world, up can actually be down, right can be wrong, black might be white ... no racism intended there ... and you can be dismissive of others' positions and always be right. You can't be taken seriously.

You are the fool that is completely brainwashed or willfully ignorant. Those are not right wing talking points you idiot. There are tons of Democrats and progressives that don’t believe in any of those things. Get on YouTube and watch a little John McWhorter and other black progressive thought leaders that think 1619, BLM, antifa, critical race theory, are all ########! It’s all ######## to manipulate people! And it’s factually incorrect all of it is founded on lies and propaganda! It embarrass me that people like you graduated from Clemson University. Because you’re too dumb to see how brainwashed you are.

Loudoun County Virginia is not a Republican county it voted 60% for Joe Biden. It’s a suburb of Washington DC. There are a lot of liberal Democrats going to school board meetings pushing back!

The stuff being taught in schools is racist! It’s anti-American, anti-democratic, anti-capitalism, anti-family, all of which helped make America the greatest country in the world and has helped bring billions of people globally out of poverty.!

America is not perfect. We have sins in our past and we don’t get everything thing right today, but we would be doing far better if we didn’t have the far left controlling our institutions brainwashing people and censoring people for money and power!

The far left is evil. It’s Marxism and communism. It is in fact another form of fascism. We’re actually living in an increasingly fascist country in America today! You can’t do anything in this country today without excessive rules laws regulations. That is fascism!

When the government controls your life and your property that is fascism! This country was founded on the individual and the government should be working for us not us working for the government and living under a surveillance state which is what we have today!

It never ceases to amaze me the intelligent Clemson graduates that are far left lunatics on this board. You people are the racists! You people are brainwashed! Or willfully ignorant. Probably both!

Go read some books by or watch conversations on YouTube with John McWhorter, Sam Harris, Brett Weinstein. Peter Boghossian, James Lindsay, Thomas Sowell, Jonathan Haidt, Glenn Loury, and other black and or progressive thought leaders that will tell you you are an idiot and that all those things you support are complete ######## and founded on lies and propaganda!!!

Re: Came across this yesterday ... makes a point!

Jul 12, 2021, 4:51 AM

What was in the letter was right. Was it partly inspired by the b.s. from last year, yes.

For those claiming this article was tainted by “right wing propaganda “ , you would be the same person on here last year proclaiming last years social justice crap was due to all this police brutality against blacks, which was easily proven as a lie if anyone smart enough to look the numbers up would have seen. Problem was , those numbers didn’t fit the narrative.

The slogans on jerseys, hero worship of a felon in Minneapolis and numerous other acts were for one reason only. BECAUSE THEY COULDNT STAND THAT THEY COULD NOT GET TRUMP OUT OF OFFICE. You can bet everything you own there will be no slogans on jerseys this year in Clemson, that would show a failure on bidens part to fix racial equality issues.

So if your going to slam the author of the letter for adding “right wing propaganda “, then have the guts to admit “left wing propaganda “ and hatred of Trump was what led to the circus last year
