Brownell

Sep 22, 2022, 4:26 PM

If our Basketball Team for this season hasn’t shown any real improvement along with recruiting that is about standard of recruiting in the past, is the focus shifted towards looking for a new basketball coach besides Brownell? And if so, who are some outside hires that would be looked into? This is only if we see no improvement regardless.

Oliver Purnell set the standard for winning at Clemson in basketball.

Someone that runs a fast paced offense and can recruit like him.

And then get up and leave in the middle of the night!!! Clemson needs more loyalty like that.

My memory of OP...

Sep 22, 2022, 4:44 PM [ in reply to Re: Brownell ]

was more of him implementing a full court "diamond" trapping pressure defensive system with front court and back court trapping areas which is designed to eliminate an opponents vision of the floor and created turnovers.

You mean riding a recruited NBA longhaul player, riding that, taking early exits in tournaments, and leaving in the dark of the ngiht to have your players find out on twitter?

OP did us some good... but he is not a standard by any stretch of the word

Just look at my Avitar out. Earl Grant would be a great candidate when Coach Brownell decides to hang it up. Has a lot of similar traits to Oliver Purnell except not the high pressure but being a disciple of Coach Brownell and Gregg Marshall at Wichita State of tough man to man pressure defense but more fast break basketball.

Coach Grant would never leave Clemeson like OP or Barnes because he loves Clemson and has always been a big fan as a boy in the state of GA. He is really going to turn around the Boston College program quickly because has 4 starters back and a top 20 recruiting class coming in. Grant is a great recruiter and because of his Southeast and SC ties would lock down most of the State of SC.

It would be like when Tommy Bowden decided to retire and recommend Dabo. When Coach Brownell feels it is best he will want his former lead assistant to take over and Neff would agree.

Other good candidates would be Pat Kelsey at CofC, Niko Medved at Colorado State, and Jeff Linder at Wyoming, and Drew Valentine at Loyola of Chicago.

Before we discuss coaching candidates can you tell us how much we budgeted for the new coach? Will we open the wallet like we did for baseball or will we make the typical Clemson basketball budget hire?

Neff giving Coacj Brownell one of the top half of the ACC biggest assistant coach salary budgets proves that he will pay big for a new HC..he let Brownell hire a current Div 1 HC as his top assistant in Billy Donlon. Neff is basketball guy and he will pay big for the right new HC...

Given Clemson basketball is not a destination position we will need to step up our game to get a top coach. If you want the same results then do the same thing. Not sure we have the revenue to be at the top of the salary scale for every sport.

Clemson finally increasing assistant coach salary budget

Sep 23, 2022, 9:18 AM [ in reply to Re: Brownell ]

doesn't prove that Neff would pay for a big time head coach.

It is certainly an encouraging sign, but it doesn't prove it.

Probably Depends on the experience and history of the coach, his qualifications just like for any other job.

You missed the point. In baseball we came out and said we had the potential of a top program so we would hire an elite coach. We did not go out and interview a bunch of up and coming guys but targeted a few elite coaches knowing it would cost top dollar which we were prepared to spend. If we are serious about winning in basketball we would follow the same process. My guess is we are not and will seek an up and coming coach at a smaller salary. The coach will either be successful and jump ship (see Barnes, Rick) or flame out so we have to start over. Either way we will be in the same or worse boat than the current situation.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes, but Clemson never even seems to entertain

Sep 23, 2022, 9:19 AM [ in reply to Re: Brownell ]

the idea of going after higher profile basketball coaches.

Again, because basketball is the red-headed stepchild of Clemson athletics.

SO ARE YOU SAYING IF WE COULD HIRE SAY A COACH FROM A TOP 5 TEAM WE WOULD NOT DO IT. CAN NOT WAIT TO HEAR THIS IDIOTIC ANSWER.

Brownell is forever immune to criticism and second guessing and has a lifetime contract. There is no questioning or second guessing his imperial majesty

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He can and should be questioned when appropriate.

Sep 23, 2022, 9:21 AM

Unfortunately, he has been forced by our cheap administration to routinely show up for a gun fight with a knife. Then many of our TNet "basketball fans" get upset and expect him to be more successful.

The reasonable fans here understand what an uphill fight our basketball coach has due to deficiencies throughout our program's history and in how our program is supported compared to many of our opponents.
