We quibble about politics...in the meantime....

Like, wow. William Gibson, the originator of the Cyberpunk dystopian genre, once used the phrase "nations so benighted the very concept of nation was still taken seriously" to describe third-world nations in the future. He viewed the multinationals as the future of humanity...not because he liked them, but because even as far back as the '80's he saw them shouldering aside actual governments and thought it inevitable they'd one day largely displace government structures as the true power blocs of the human race.

When you see Elon Musk and Bezos headed for trillionaire status - which would represent slightly less than 2% of the net worth of the USA, just between those two guys alone - and when you see this...well, you wonder if that day is actually already here. BlackRock just passed $10 trillion in assets. Which is roughly equal to the total assets held by all of Canada...and not quite an eighth of the total value of China.

BlackRock could buy and sell Saudi Arabia six times over.

The world is worth 418.342 trillion dollars, give or take. BlackRock alone now has 10 trillion of that.

For realz. But I actually suspect this country got bought a long time ago.

Citizens United Versus Federal Election Commission? Once the FEC lost that one, it was done and dusted. Dark money - meaning, BlackRock, Koch Industries, Exxon, anybody else with billions to throw around - owned the US of A, and will forevermore until we strike that down. Which is going to be hard since it's dark money appointing the politicians who appoint the judges....

Peoples, I think we're well and truly effed here.

I think you're missing the thread of the conversation here, clem.

How does Brandon - or any politician, for that matter - compel a $10 trillion entity that's worth about 8% of the net worth of the USA...to do anything?

It’s an interesting topic for sure. So…wealthy individuals and large multinationals would achieve some sort of ‘sovereign’ status where they would basically be autonomous, acting outside the control/purview of any government or centralized authority? If we get lucky and our new corporate overlords are benevolent, think of all the #### that might actually get done for the benefit of mankind. On the other hand, the opposite could just as easily be true…and probably more likely. When have you ever known any corporate entity to do anything that wasn’t in their own best interest?
