Brad Brownell

I’m almost certain this is the year Brad has to do something, or else. But remembering back, one thing he’s always done well is play good before ACC play. We never do bad in November and December. It’s always the ACC that gets to us. Got a good team, a tournament team.

Not always good in non conference. We were 5-4 (0-1 ACC) at this point last year. So this year definitely has started better than last.

Yea, not sure I follow you on your " he never does bad in November and December thought.
And unfortunately this team looks just like every other Brad Brownell team, a little below average, will do just enough, likely a team that finishes a couple games over .500. This team looks just like every other Brad Brownell coached basketball team in the past 100 years he has been here.
I wish people cared about basketball....they used to under OP....but all of that excitement is long gone. Now Brad is trying to manufacture it while being the robot he is.

Don't know whether you watched the games or not, but we have beaten some good teams already this year. Bellarmine will be a tournament team. Towson will be a tournament team. Our only bad loss is to Carolina. I'd much rather have a coach who produces better than the material he can get at a "football" school like Clemson. Brownell teams have consistently finished higher than they were picked at the start of the season. If you were actually there at the games providing good vocal support, you might have a right to gripe, but I doubt that you were.

Pad your record with tomato can victories
Win a couple of early season ACC games to get everyone’s hopes up
Get outcoached down the stretch
When a couple of shockers late in the season to make the NIT
Rinse , repeat

We beat Wake Forest handily. Are they not I. The ACC anymore? Also, we’ve beaten 3 teams that are ranked higher in the net than half the ACC.

No, really? Hard to believe Duke, Carolina, UVA, Syracuse, Notre Dame are better than Loyola Maryland, Citadel and USC Upstate.

Let’s compare him to Leonard Hamilton, head coach at the other football school in our basketball conference.
First, wow - what happened to FSU this year. They are 1-9, with losses to Stetson, UCF and Troy. I guess we can say that for Brownell, his team are rarely horrible. It can always be worse I suppose.
But, this year aside, Hamilton has been more successful at FSU than Brownell at Clemson.
Hamilton at FSU: Overall 418–251 (.625), ACC 186–157 (.542)
Brownell at Clemson: Overall 226–168 (.574), ACC 104–111 (.484)
Hamilton has an ACC title, a regular season title and also the sudo-championship at the tourney the year it was cancelled by covid. He’s made the NCAA tourney 9 out of his 20 years (45%), giving him credit for 2020 where they certainly earned a bid but it wasn’t played. Of the eight NCAA tourneys he has competed in, he makes the Sweet Sixteen half of the time (4) and the Elite Eight once.
Brownell has no ACC titles of any kind. He has made the NCAA tourney 3 times in 12 years (25%) including famously his first year with his predecessor’s players who has made the tourney the prior three years. And of course he has the one Sweet Sixteen in 2018.
It is possible to win at an acceptable level in basketball at an ACC football school.

Hamilton has done a great job at FSU

but only at times. He’s been wildly inconsistent.
I’m not really sure what FSU has to do with us though.
There is a lot more high school basketball talent in Florida than there is in South Carolina. And while FSU isn’t a traditional basketball power, they have a better hoops history to claim than we do. They had a lot of NCAA Tournament appearances in the 80s and 90s.
FSU has also been patient with Hamilton. He didn’t make the NCAA Tournament at FSU until year 7. Then he made four NCAAs in a row, then missed the NCAAs the next four years in a row. Then he made four NCAAs in a row, then missed the NCAAs last year and is likely to miss again this year. Their team this year is far worse than any team Brad has ever coached.

Yea, they were patient with him. After not making it the first 6 years, he has qualified 9 out of 14 years. Their patience was rewarded. Maybe ours will be too after being patient 12+ years. Some sarcasm there, but I really want to be wrong.
I don’t think Tallahassee was ever a big pull for big time basketball talent. But his success made it better. Yea, he’s in Florida but there’s also more competition for that talent and any big time recruits will draw national attention anyway. So he definitely still has to work for it.

It’s important to realize that FSU spends a lot more on men’s basketball than we do.

FSU puts roughly $12 million into their program, while we only put about $8 million into ours.
That’s a big difference.

Clemson Men's BB expenditures are $6.3 Million and FSU's are $6.7 Million. Just scroll to the bottom of the page.
Judge Keller spreads straight up lies and excuses about our BB program 24/7.

I'm just curious, what additional resources do you think we need to have a more consistent program? We upgraded our facilities and we funded the coaches that I assume BB wanted. What else is going to make a difference?

Yes football schools all around the country have been doing well (Auburn,Alabama,Tennessee,Ohio State, and others). With Brownell I feel the 2 biggest flaws are his recruiting, and his coaching in the last 10 minutes of a game. But overall recruiting, we get players like PJ Hall, but not consistently.
