during archery and muzzleloader seasons because of coyotes and huge hogs. Shot at an armadillo last week and discovered that the only bullet I had in it was in the chamber. Would have been a shocker if it had been a big boar in front of me. I thought the magazine had a capacity load in it. Friends have been calling me Barney Fife, but at least I had the bullet in the pistol instead of my pocket.

weapons. I would consider you an expert with firearms....and still...a small mistake. I had a friend who was a tank commander in the 80's and 90's. Reloaded all manner of ammo....270,38, 41 mag, 7x57.....etc.etc. He was cleaning his 1911 one night in the den with his wife watching tv. Finished cleaning it, put an empty mag in,racked it and pulled the trigger before stowing it away. BLEW THE ARM OFF A ROCKER A FEW FEET away. When he did that, I knew it could happen to ANYBODY. ENNNN EEEE BODY as Dabo would say...

Racked one in the chamber, same exact way. Went through his living room wall and into his kids’ bedroom.
Another guy, same company, discharged his sidearm in his office into his bosses office next door. Had he been sitting at his desk he would have splattered his brains all over the computer. Still works there too…

Prior to this year I had been carrying a pistol during archery and muzzleloader seasons too, but not during rifle season because I have a loaded rifle, right? This year trail cams on our club caught a bear and something that everyone on they club says is a mountain lion and I cannot really argue. Pic is attached. It is a little hard to see because of the glare from the sun. My son made the point that I should probably carry my pistol even during rifle season because it would be hard to shoot an attacking big cat using a rifle with a scope at close range. I think the same would go for an attacking dog. As of last week, I now carry my sidearm during rifle season as well.

Bears are not likely to harm you unless they have young ones with them. I have spent most of my working life in the woods, alone, and have had no problem with them. Just a word of advice…. IF you run upon one in the woods don’t think you will outrun it! They are built for speed with Big wheels in the back and smaller ones in the front. Just find a slim tree you can climb and he can’t…. And wait him out. I never carried a gun with me but probably should have. The thing I most feared was a bunch of wild, hungry dogs. That can be a real problem,

yard when she got home from work - they had torn her cat apart and wouldn't let her get out of her car, even following it into her garage. I went turkey hunting behind her house a few weeks later and was sitting on the ground and had the same dogs sneaking up on me from 3 angles. Luckily, I happened to look around as they were getting within 30 yards of me and got my gun around just far enough to get the one that was described as the leader of the pack, The other 2 ran away and haven't been seen in the area again.

I carry a Springfield Armory Hellcat 9mm. It is compact and easy to carry but it has a double stack mag so it holds more rounds than the M&P shield my son carries. The Hellcat came with 11 round and 13 round mags and after I got it they came out with a 15 round that extends the grip slightly which I like even better.

I was in a huntin club outside of McCormick about 15 years ago. One morning I was gonna hunt a buddy-stand I put up overlooking a bottom. I got out of my truck and walked around to the passenger side to grab my backpack and rifle and suddenly I felt like something was standing behind me. I turned around and there was this mangy-looking dog about 2 feet behind me with a look like he was about to take a bite out of my leg. Scared the absolute crap out of me. When I jumped and hollered he took off. I had only been standing there for about a minute and never heard him walk up behind me. Good thing he was by himself.

I have had that happen several times.
I worked a summer internship in Hell Hole Swamp in McClellanville after my junior year in Forestry School and I can tell you some real life animal stories! But NOTHING can compare with the mosquitos and yellow flies. You ignore cane break rattlers because you are to busy swatting pesky insects. I used an entire case of army insect repellent that summer. Never again will I do that. Especially for $117.76 every two weeks!

Back in the day i used to hunt with my dad and his friend. Every time we started into the woods the friend would say “if you see a dog that looks like it is not someones pet shoot it” At the time I was not sure why

That’s pretty interesting. I’ve never heard of a Carolina dog.

available only online, an article said a person walking their dog after dark was surrounded by a pack of coyotes that wouldn’t back off & they called 911 & cops arrived & saw at least 9 run away - lots of them where I hunt - already seen 5 & killed one wth muzzleloader

What if you carry a side of beef for any bears or a pack of dogs?
If it’s a bear, you may make a powerful ally to help you traverse the wilderness. Dogs, on the other hand, you can recruit them like a group of henchmen to help you hunt bears or boars. Be a beastmaster.
