Boys from Oregon headed to Clemson!!

Greetings to all the Clemson faithful!!

We are headed to the Syracuse/Clemson game this weekend on our annual boys weekend trip that we refer to as the "Fall Cathedral Tour".

Some quick background. There are four of us, three Oregon State Beaver fans... and one Duck fan (but we let him come with us anyways). This is the 16th year we have made this trip - we pick a different college football stadium every year. Our goal is simple. We want to experience gameday with true fans of the school we are adopting. We come in blazing the home team's colors, drink with the fans at the local watering hole Friday, tailgate with our new people Saturday, and generally treat the trip as if we were alumni that haven't back in 20 years.

The list of stadiums we have visited includes: Penn State, Tennessee, Alabama, Mizzou, Wisconsin, Michigan, Texas A &M, South Carolina (how does anyone even become a fan of SC??!!), Florida, Auburn, Florida State, Mississippi State, Georgia, LSU, and ND. (in no particular order)

The great experiences could hardly be tallied, but here are a few over the years:

Holding the banner the players go under at Auburn
Golf cart tour of the behind the scenes at ND
Locker room tour at Penn State
Picture on the field with Chief Osceola at Florida State
Rented an RV and parked it next to the stadium at Alabama
Moonshine out of a mason jar at Tennessee
Turtle soup at LSU
White out at Penn State
... the list goes on and on!!

Unquestionably, the very best part of the trip is the people we meet!! What we have learned is that there is no better way to really experience a gameday, than by immersing ourselves in the tailgating!

So a few questions:
1. What can we not miss while we are in Clemson? What do we absolutely have to experience?
2. All of the above is really a precursor to this ask. We would love to join/stop by your tailgate if you were interested in talking college football with some true fans! Anybody game to let us crash your party?

Thanks so much in advance for any input!! Can't wait to watch us destroy Syracuse!!

I have no doubt you are right... night games are our favorite for sure. Unfortunately, you just never know game times, or for that matter how good the matchup will be when we book the trip. We feel really lucky that Syracuse is undefeated this year, they could easy be a sub .500 team!

Have a few beers at the Esso Club. Barbecue at the Smokin’ Pig in Pendleton.

I'll tell you one thing right now...

Oct 19, 2022, 1:14 PM

with comments like "how does anyone even become a fan of SC?" you'll fit right in around here and be welcomed with open arms.

Here are a few recommendations:

1 - It's Homecoming, so walk out to Bowman Field and check-out the Homecoming displays (Friday night and Saturday morning).

2 - Have some Bar-B-Que at the Smokin' Pig in Pendleton (it's only about a 10 minute drive from campus).

3 - Knock-back a few cold ones at the Esso Club.

4 - 90 minutes before kickoff, Tiger Band has pep rally in the amphitheater.

5 - Check-out Tiger Walk which takes place two hours before kickoff in the parking lot behind the west end zone. This is when the team gets off the buses and walks to the team entrance in the WestZone of Memorial Stadium.

6 - Be in your seats in time to see "The Most Exciting 25 Seconds in College Football", as the Tigers rub Howard's Rock and run down the Hill (about five minutes before kickoff).

7 - Walk out on the field after the game (it's a Clemson tradition so it's OK) and take pictures with Howard's Rock at the top of The Hill.

Have fun and welcome to Clemson.

Jimmy is the son of legendary Clemson coach Frank Howard, who once had a rock used as a doorstop in his office someone picked up from Death Valley, CA, and brought back to him. It was in his way and he asked one of the office workers to get rid of it. The next thing he knew, they had put it on top of a pedestal inside the football stadium, so he came up with the story to tell the players that any players that were going to give him a 110% could rub his rock, but those who weren't to keep their filthy hands off his rock. The rest is history.

We do tailgate rather well, as it is necessary due to there only being two roads in and out of Clemson. So I'd recommend inviting yourselves to a couple tailgates. If you are wearing another teams colors, you'll get offered anyway, since Clemson fans like to show hospitality.

Oct 19, 2022, 1:23 PM

Clemson tailgates will welcome you with open arms. Do wear at least 1 Piece of Beaver/Duck gear. Things that we always enjoy over 30 years of games:

1) Esso Club Bar - Do it Friday night and/or before and after game. It's only 500 yards to stadium.
2) Tiger Town Tavern - Another Tiger staple...Friday night rocks
3) Tiger Walk - 2 hours before kickoff on West side of stadium the team walks thru tailgate to stadium
4) Gathering at the Paw - At EVERY game conclusion fans are welcomed to the field to mingle. This is not a storming, despite every network knowing this for 20 years. Go mingle with crowd and team. Then walk up the hill on the East end and see Frank Howards Rock at top of hill
5) Smokin Pig BBQ - Nationally recognized, get some http://thesmokinpigsc.com/

6) Campus - is East of Stadium and very walkable. Hit main Bowman field as this is homecoming and the float/display https://alumni.clemson.edu/events/homecoming/

7) Be seated to watch team run down the hill. Get to seats for this game by 11:15. I would hit stadium gates at 11ish

Remember during Tiger Rag (Fight Song) when the fans spell Clemson. They pause after the "O" for one beat so if so inclined pause for 1 beat after the letter O https://youtu.be/4roz3vV5ul0?t=105

Have a Blast............Go Tigers!

Oct 19, 2022, 1:24 PM

It took 18 years for Clemson to make it to the top of the list?????

Gotta hit the Esso Club Friday night or after the game. Since it is a noon game I would recommend after the game Saturday. Make sure you are in the stadium at least 40 minutes prior to the game to see the Victory Walk and of course you have to see the team run down the hill 5 minutes prior to kickoff. Tiger Walk goes through the parking lot 5 at the west end of the stadium and it happens 2 hours prior to kickoff.

Funny you mention that...

The equation that goes into making this weekend work includes lots of factors. Family plans... kids sports... hunting weekends... tickets to OSU/UO games...is there an NFL game close on Sunday? Expected matchup... so many factors!!

Re: Boys from Oregon headed to Clemson!!

Oct 19, 2022, 1:34 PM

When you start to repeat stadium trips I’ll bet Clemson will be much closer to the top of the list. I’m looking forward to hearing feedback next week on your thoughts after the visit.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The two closest NFL teams are...

Oct 19, 2022, 1:38 PM [ in reply to Re: Boys from Oregon headed to Clemson!! ]

the Flacons and the Panthers.

While the Falcons are in Cincinnati, the Panthers are at home against Tampa Bay (1:00 PM kickoff). Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte is only about a two hour drive from Clemson. The team sucks so getting tickets shouldn't be a problem.

Across the street from The Rock is the Memorial Park which will give you a good feel for why the game venue is called Memorial Stadium). Most of us older grads have a few friends memorialized there ( the "fallen" from Clemson have their names inscribed on stones of the memorial.
.
For a good feel of the students, check out downtown before or after the game :Tiger Town Tavern and/or The Study Hall. They will be filled with the young and the young at heart. When The Study Hall was much smaller (in the 60s) I rode my horse (which I had near Clemson for my lasts semester) and tied him up to a parking meter just outside the door. Watched with amusement and some concern when a drunk began talking and touching "Bo" ( short for P.G.T.A. Beauregard ).

I'm sure you will get lots of suggestions but those are mine. Welcome to Clemson.

you visit. Most of what you need to see or do is listed above but I'll add (& repeat) a few more:

1. Walk the campus or at least drive around and take it all in.
2. Walk downtown, visit the homecoming floats then visit the shops and bars like Tiger Sports Shop, Tiger Town Tavern, Mr. Knickerbockers, TD's, Sloan St. etc. Downtown (and the campus) is pretty compact and an easy walk about.
3. Esso Club will be packed, grab a beer
4. Visit Hendrix Center for ice cream, get some famous Clemson Blue Cheese to take back with you.
5. A ton of people will be tailgating after the game and there will be a lot of people walking around and checking out the floats.
6. Tigerama Friday Night

Enjoy your visit and come back and see us! Go Tigers!

Re: Boys from Oregon headed to Clemson!!

Oct 19, 2022, 2:15 PM

WELCOME!!

I know you will have a great time. I am a 1984 Clemson graduate. It is a beautiful venue for a college football game. It is a small college town that lives and breathes Tiger football. On home football game days, the population swells, and it becomes one of the largest cites in the state. While South Carolina's stadium is part of a concrete jungle (YUKE), our stadium is very picturesque. And, as you probably already know, our team's entrance has been voted the best in college football many, many times. Don't forget to get your picture taken at "Howard's Rock", and pick up a Tiger Rag at one of the stores downtown. You will be watching a game at the original Death Valley, not the secondary one at LSU! I will be unable to attend, but look forward to hearing your report of your experiences!
GO TIGERS!!!

Re: Boys from Oregon headed to Clemson!!

Oct 19, 2022, 2:35 PM

Truly, welcome to Clemson. Pretty sure you'll love it, even at noon. Agree with posts below. Smokin Pig for a meal - pork bbq is really good, but get something with the brisket as well, Esso club for football talk and refreshments, be in your seats by 11:30 or so for pregame including the running down the hill. Tiger walk, but may take you away from great tailgating. Unfortunately, my family is mia for this one, but hopefully someone will invite you, but if not, go to 2A, 2, or 1 and introduce yourself. It's homecoming and Bowman field displays are neat - allow 30-45 minutes pre-pregame. One neat tradition is we don't storm the field, students and family gather at the paw on the field after every game - so work your way down and go on the field. Gives you a neat perspective, and if you beat the younguns, you might get a souvenir chin strap on wrist band. Lastly, for Saturday night, call Rick Erwins or Pixie and Bill's, tell them your story, and see if they can work you in. If staying in Greenville, there are any number of places for Sunday brunch. Don't forget Clemson ice cream, and take home Clemson Bleau Cheese. Enjoy and if you get to Mac's acting like an alumnus, do not order a milkshake on gameday or wave your hat at the end of the alma mater.

I lived in Oregon and I have a graduate degree from Oregon State.

Planning on coming out there next spring/summer to watch the Beavs in a regional or super.

————PM Update————

1. A lot of great suggestions on here!
2. Go chase trout on the Chattooga River. You can land brookies, brown, and rainbow. Pig Pen Falls and Licklog Falls is a fun spot.
3. Table Rock State Park - foliage will be perfect this time of year - great hike and views from the top.
4. Wildcat Branch waterfalls - beautiful waterfalls, great time of year to do it.
5. Military history on campus - I know OSU does a lot for its students who are serving/are veterans and has a strong military tradition of its own.
6. Esso Club for sure.
7. Smokin’ Pig BBQ for sure.
8. Y’all have had some really cool experiences on your trips. Wear your orange/black OSU gear and go over to the football complex/facility and see what good things may come your way!
9. Go check out the baseball facilities too (DKS), we are still chasing our first, y’all already got three!!!

Let us know how your trip goes - safe travels!

Best,
Matt

Welcome Beavers & Duck Fans!!

Oct 19, 2022, 3:59 PM

I light "beavers" the best but a duck in green or yellow attire is special too!

3 years ago at a home Clemson game (vs aTm) I met & had a super chat & photo session with delightful mid-age couple wearing their O sports clothing..

and said they were doing what you Boys have done, go to various hot beds of college football.

The ESSO Club just 1 long block from stadium is a must where you grab a cold beer & drink it in the pumpless parking lot with couple hundred other "Orangenecks" and listen to a horrible rock band. Buy you a ESSO Club ball cap with a PAW on one side (have to go inside though).

For a historian you could visit & quickly tour John C Calhoun's white mansion up on the outside hill that leads straight down to the new scoreboard (just 1/2 block walk) and same exact area that Tiger Band strikes up Tiger Rag and marches down that outside hill and around the stadium at 45 minutes til start of game (thus 11-11:15).

Calhoun was U.S. VP (twice), Sec of State & Senator and his Daughter Flo married Thomas Green Clemson of Philly (hence our founder was a Yankee!)
and she & Tom gave Fort Hill & thousands of acreage to state for an agricultural & military college before its founding of 889.

Clemson military put out more officers in WW2 than any college not named Army, Navy, Tam..but more than The Citadel, VMI & others.

Oh, John C was 6'6" as well as his two famous visitors of Daniel Webster & Henry Clay and his bed proves it (which he died on).

OK..enjoy your day and GoTiGERS!

1. Friday night go to smokin pig
2. Be in your seats early to watch the team run down the hill

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Hate it’s a noon game. You’re not gonna get the full effect

Oct 19, 2022, 5:19 PM

Of running down the hill like a night game. You can make your way over and get your picture with Howard’s Rock.
I hope the students aren’t hung over from Friday nights Homecoming festivities and show up on time. One thing that pisses us off is the fire Marshall has limited the number of students on the hill due to the surge at the bottom when we have a big game and students run on the field.

Clemson is one of the last stadiums in America where you can go on the field after the game. It’s not rushing the field, it’s called” Gathering at the Paw”

Re: Boys from Oregon headed to Clemson!!

Oct 19, 2022, 5:39 PM

Welcome guys!! Hope it’s one of the best trips you’ve been on.

Let me offer a suggested itinerary:

FRIDAY
Early afternoon (if you’re in town): Drive the campus, go by the football facility, Bowman Field, John C Calhoun house.
5pm: Smokin Pig BBQ in Pendleton (10 min drive)
7pm: Tigerama (Homecoming festivities in the stadium stadium. Dabo and Team will be there. Tickets are $15 at Ticketmaster)
8:30pm: Go downtown. Several bars/restaurants have been mentioned. You can also walk to Bowman Field and see homecoming floats made by student organizations

SATURDAY
8am: Parked and walking to tailgates. Any lots close to the stadium will be great (Centennial Blvd Lot, Fike Lot, Cemetary Hill Lot, Littlejohn, Rogers Family Lot 5)
10am: Tiger Walk (team comes in at Lot 5)
10:30: tailgate in Lot 5
11:00: head to gates
11:20: Walk of Champions (team marches together on the field)
11:55: Running down the Hill
3pm: Head to Esso Club and celebrate a Tiger victory

That should get you a fairly good 24-hour experience of most of the highlights!

Enjoy! Welcome to Tiger Town!

How does anyone become a SC fan?

Well…..the instant they are born, the Dr drops them on their head. When mom and dad go to take the baby home, dad forgets that he set the cradle on top of the car and the baby falls off and hits it’s head again. Then when they’re going through the door at home, dad hits the baby’s head on the doorway. Then they accidentally feed the baby lead for a year, instead of milk. Presto….you have a coot fan.

Re: Boys from Oregon headed to Clemson!!

Oct 19, 2022, 6:07 PM

Let’s us know a few logistical details of your trip so that we can recommend suggestions. Like are you staying in Clemson, what time do you arrive, do you have game tickets, are they lower deck (our upper decks do not have access to the lower level or field for after the game, but you can exit and the renter the stadium afterwards). Are you driving to game (you may want to get a parking pass)?

I hate that I’m not able to go to this game (I don’t miss many) or I’d certainly hook you up.
Friday afternoon - campus tour (details forthcoming)
Friday late afternoon- Smoking Pig for BBQ
Friday night - Esso for drinks and music
Friday late night - Downtown (Tigertown Tavern, Study Hall, Sloan St Taproom)
Saturday 7am - “get up, tape your ankles and grab a biscuit” - Dabo’s recent quote about this noon game
Saturday morning - roam the tailgate lots (there are more than 30 lots all over campus)
Head into stadium at 11:15
At end of game, go walk out on the field via one of the end zones for out “gathering at the paw”
The “hill” is the open end of the stadium with the scoreboard. Howard’s Rock sits underneath it. Definitely go see that and get a players perspective of running down the hill.
Saturday, after game - more tailgating. If walking, another chance to starting making your way back downtown or through campus.
Saturday night - hit whatever you missed on Friday night.

Re: Boys from Oregon headed to Clemson!!

Oct 19, 2022, 8:00 PM

Please arrive by Friday noon. Check out Station 55 on the East side of campus and get some ice cream in whatever form you like. I like the milkshakes. If you have a way to keep it cool, get some Clemson Bleau Cheese. get yourself your accommodations for two nights and then head back to town to see the TigerRama and the fireworks show afterwards. Pick yourself a place to ick yourself a place eat early and enjoy the evening. Get to bed early because you will want to get to Campus by 8am.
That is when the judging of the displays will take place. Wander around campus go visit the tailgaters in any direction. The Clemson Tiger Band starts marching down the Hill around 11am and I think the Tiger Walk will occur on the west side of the stadium about 10am. Follow the band down the Hill and visit some more tailgaters. Get into your seats by 11:30 and listen to the uptick in excitement. Ask any Clemson fans what to do after the game. You will get plenty of suggestions and pointers. Have a Great day and Go Tigers! Fight!

P.S. You might want to bring one or two tubes of Halls so you can keep your voice until the Second Half. And if you were planning to sit and watch this game, you should have stayed in the Motel. We tend to stand during the action. Drive Carefully. Bon Voyage!

I'm still trying get my head around why anyone would even go to UofSC on a tour trip? Oh well, many of us don't even want to go to the "Roach" when the Tigers play there. Coming to Clemson (all be it late) will hopefully help you get the stinch from UofSC off you. ? After the doo doo ice in Cootlumbia, I'm not sure. Seriously though, enjoy the town and all it offers, enjoy the game and enjoy the most exciting 25 seconds in college football. Have a group picture taken at the 50 yard line, meeting at the PAW, after the game.

In between you gotta hit Tiger town Tavern and Sloan Street taproom.

Oct 19, 2022, 10:30 PM

Where are you staying? In Clemson or somewhere else? Do you know where your parking can help with the flow of things, Noon game kinda sucks for taking in too much before the game.

The Esso Club is a must, pregame or postgame... buy a hat or a tee there, will always be a great reminder.

Tigerwalk.

Be in the stadium early enough for the National Anthem and then the buildup to the hill run... with the new Dabotron and sound system the place can get lit.

Tailgate lots to see, if you do go to Bowman then take a walk thru Heisman, then Lot1 and Lot2 (Lot 2 is right outside the stadium)...

here is a link to the parking lots and general area around the stadium:

- walk around the center of the campus - around the amphitheater.

Unfortunately I am working away from SC this week and won’t make it to the Clemson game, but y’all need to go to the ESSO club, and be In the stadium with a good view of the hill before the Tigers come in.

I definitely agree with the Smokin pig for BBQ. My favorite thing there are the sides that they offer with the BBQ. You’ve been given great suggestions.

Dlgobeavs In Atlanta on Monday, you can hit the Georgia Aquarium if you have time. Really cool place. Shouldn't be too crowded on a Monday during the school year.

Also, if you have time, you may seriously want to reconsider your plans on Sunday/Monday and hit downtown Greenville, which is just about 45 minutes to an hour north of Seneca/Clemson. It is one of the top downtowns in the country, literally. Falls Park on the Reedy is beautiful and a great place to hang out. There are loads of great local restaurants and breweries there Don't come that close to Greenville without a visit - trust me! It's on MANY lists of top downtowns or top small towns in the COUNTRY, much less the southeast! I highly, highly encourage it!

Regarding your other plans, they look great! Definitely hit the Smokin' Pig. Outstanding BBQ and sides. And Definitely hit the field after the game - as far as I know, we're the only FBS/D1 team that not only allows fans on the field after the game but actively encourages it!

Campus should be beautiful this time of year and looks like you'll have really nice weather.

Have a great time, welcome to Clemson, and Go Tigers!

Oct 20, 2022, 1:12 AM

I'm a Clemson fan from the Midwest, have lived in Texas the last 36 years and UO happens to be my second favorite team. Chip Kelly returning to Eugene this weekend with an undefeated UCLA team should be fun. I think the Ducks will expose them as a fraud and blow them out.

I also follow the Beavers. The comeback wins over Fresno State and Stanford were great. The USC game was painful; still shaking my head over that one slipping away. I've enjoyed "Pac 12 After Dark" for years. Hopefully Jonathan Smith stays for a long time.

Have a great time at the game. I guess this weekend there will be another person in America rooting for both Clemson and Oregon; very little or no overlap in fan bases. Unfortunately, down here just southwest of Houston, I've never met another Clemson or Duck fan in person.

My dream CFB championship game would be Tigers vs Ducks. Of course, my heart would be with the Tigers.

not as I remembered it. Not as big or grand, but still better than when it was in Littlejohn.

When I was there in the late 80s/early 90s, it was actually on the field in the stadium, not on the sidelines. The band had room to march, the greeks had plenty of room for their skits, cheerleaders had room, Pershing Rifles had room and we filled up most of the lower bowl areas. Fireworks were launched from the lot behind the stadium so you'd watch them from your seats in the Valley. Very cool. Great memories as a child there in the stands and as a student on the field.

Clemson -

We can’t thank you enough for the unbelievable hospitality this weekend!!!!!! We truly experienced an epic game, tailgating and partied with some incredible people!!!

Some highlights include:

Esso Club - met the owner Charles and spent hours drinking with him Friday. Also met Deb … your incoming Clemson Alumni Association president.

Tailgating started at 7:30am with a 5th of Jaeger…hooked up with Mike for breakfast shots and bacon chasers.

Moved through copious random tailgate groups…. On our way to reconnect with Deb (from Esso club) and her generous family . Sincerely enjoyed our time with her group!!

We made it to our seats in time to watch the grand entrance…very cool!!

We spent all afternoon watching our Tigers come back for the W! C. L. E. M. S. O…….N! I especially liked the rushing the field after the game!

Stopped by for a beer with Sam on the north side of the stadium.

Beers afterwards at Esso… followed by drinks at a variety of bars up at the top of the hill. At this point I can’t be responsible for recalling names, places, or actual happenings!

Dinner at Palmetto Smoke House - delicious oysters and shrimp/grits!!

Stumble/ Uber back to our hotel 15 hours and 14k steps after we started our Clemson game day experience!

Sunday we commuted back towards ATL, with a stop at Etowah Valley Sporting Clays for some shooting’… super fun… highly recommend!!

Steak dinner and martinis at Cook & Soldier… another high recommend!’

We head back to Oregon tomorrow. We enjoyed getting to know so many of you! Thank you for the hospitality, the epic game day experience , and letting us be Tiger fans for the weekend.

Dave, Duke, Paul and Brian

Glad y'all had fun, just don't call it "storming the field"...like ever LOL. Meeting at the Paw is what it is called.

Although, I did have to LOL over the camera orientation of that last picture. You all have now not only graduated from The Spud School of Cinematography, you even exceeded normal expectations!
