Bowl opt-outs?

Nov 28, 2021, 11:29 AM

Booth seems like a prime candidate. I'd love to see him suit up one more time but he certainly doesn't need to prove anything else.

Without a doubt booth doesn’t need to play in the bowl game. He needs to start preparing for the draft and NFL life.

It depends on what he prioritizes really

If he's looking at it from a career perspective then skipping the bowl is 100% the correct decision. The chance of getting injured might be relatively small, but we've seen it happen quite a bit over the years. And there's basically nothing he can do in the bowl to improve his draft stock at this point.

On the other hand, he may just want to suit up with his brothers one more time. That's getting less and less common for 1st round prospects, but it does still happen.

His NFL draft stock is already high. Any bump from the bowl game would be minimal and could be accomplished through testing well.

This has made me crazy from the first time it came up! It seems to me; "the majority of players get hurt while training"! If not when they are training; they get hurt in "non-contact motions"! ACL tears, bicep and pec tears and such seem to all come as a result of "over-training"! Besides that; the only way to get better at football is to play it.
How many big to gi-normous college football names "never made it in the NFL"? Too many to count says Tim Tebow! Jimmy Clausen! Half the QB's from Southern Cal, LOL!

Don't believe me - keep your eyes on the ticker on ESPN or your favorite sports network and see what the injuries are. See if they were from getting hit or hitting somebody type injuries!
They aren't! And, they are all injuries you most certainly can get while training and making those same moves when nobody got to see how impressive you "were" moving!

Training can't be avoided... playing in what most feel are meaningless games can be.

I understand wanting to lower your risk of injury when possible... even if the fan in me doesn't like it.

Then why play against the coots yesterday?

I understand the whole future stuff, but leaving “your team” while “your team” still playing was not an issue until recently.

A couple of years ago Bama played a meaningless bowl game and all played( except maybe one or two that had nagging injuries). We will find out what culture Dabo has instilled.

You wonder if there will come a day when the last year of a kids 3 years removed from H.S. year will "just not be played"!
To me; not playing in a bowl game makes about as much sense! If the idea is to train for football - then "duh"! The coaches know you are going pro(if you communicate that to them). Some exceptions could be made I am sure to give you extra work or if your going to work out on your own after team events no problem.
But, I kind of also disagree with the notion it can't help your stock. Martavis Bryant and Carlos Watkins are players I seem to recall helping their draft stock during the bowl prep and game.

I would ask: "what about a kid who got hurt in game 3 or game 4 of his last must-play year"? That same kid who didn't get hurt - now with 1 game left decides "not to play now"? Really? You're in football shape - you go out to play football and in January you get into even better football shape! Many players still play who will be drafted and I applaud them. The kids who don't much respect to their decision. I just don't think it's the right one. No knock on them though.

I'm just looking at Booth right now. He's probably more highly thought of in NFL circles than any WR he'll be matched up against. What does he gain from shutting them down? He's only risking injury and potentially having a bad game.

Booth, maybe XT. I doubt anyone else will. XT could benefit because the NFL will ask why he missed the last two games during the interviews. He should play in the bowl and the Senior Bowl if invited.

XT tweeted that he's "100% playing" in response to someone wishing to see him in the bowl game.

He’ll play

Nov 28, 2021, 1:30 PM

because he wants to.
