One ESPN bowl game saying CU & ISU

Dec 6, 2021, 7:35 AM

will have several players opting out of the bowl game. What Tigers can you see skipping the game…

I would be slightly surprised if Booth opted out. We were sitting next to his family at the UGA game and had some great conversations with his father. I think there is a lot of integrity (which was easy to see he got from his father) and obviously a lot of competitiveness driving the younger Mr. Booth. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if he plays.

Dabo has already indicated that Ross has made his last catch at Clemson and with the injuries he has I don’t even really consider that opting out. Maybe XT - again more because of injuries. Don’t see KJ opting out and still hoping he comes back for next year.

These sort of things can easily change, but I saw a tweet from XT posted last week where he said he'd be playing in the bowl game. Someone had tweeted at him saying they would understand if he sat out the bowl game and his response was he'd be playing.

This game is a horrible game for us. If we win, and win big, no one will care because it’s ISU and we’re supposed to stomp them. But, if we happen to lose, can you imagine the #### storm? It’s a lose-lose, so I hope the guys that do play, are focused, although I don’t see that being a problem with Dabo.

Not sure how you say we are supposed to stomp them

Dec 6, 2021, 8:19 AM

We are not playing App St or South Florida.

This is a very well coached team that most likely will be the favorite.

Uh Oh, that's an insurmountable lead. Mostly because, it is

Dec 6, 2021, 9:20 AM

virtually impossible to score a half point.

Just as an aside, if I were running a Bookie operation in Vegas, I would ALWAYS make my lines include half points. Mostly because, even in my VERY limited gambling experience, the one thing I hated more than being just completely wrong was a Bookie "Push" (Tie, which goes to the House). Half points assure there cannot be such a thingy.

A "Push" does not go to the bookie.
You don't win or lose a push.

Well coached or not, we’re still facing Big 12 talent which is akin to AAC talent. I would say Wake is more talented than them, and that wasn’t particularly close.

A little early research says they have a pretty good defense so it sounds like it could be low scoring. Of course this means our offense needs to play like they did the last 2 games of the year and not give them any freebies. If we can do that we win.

Based on what? I think Matt Campbell is a good coach, and respect what he’s done in a place that hasn’t seen success since the days of Seneca Wallace, but he’s peaked in terms of what can be done at ISU. They play in a conference where defense is considered a four letter word, yet still struggled to a 7-5 season. Maybe it’ll be a little closer, and I know we want to pump them up to get excited for this game, but I don’t see it being particularly close.

Dec 7, 2021, 2:55 PM [ in reply to Re: Not sure how you say we are supposed to stomp them ]

It's not 2012. The Big 12 went undefeated in bowl games last year with a string of strong defensive performances. Our defense has been so good the past 5 years that Venables and crew came to Ames several years ago when y'all were going to the playoffs to pick our DC's brain.

We're 7-5 because we had terrible special teams early in the year (Iowa and Baylor losses) got absolutely screwed by the officials against WVU (not just one call - there were 21 points worth of botched calls against us) got beat in a close game on the road against a talented OU squad, and flat out choked against TTU. This team was wildly inconsistent this year, but talented. They'll put 7-8 guys in the NFL, and we have the best RB in college football.

I think you definitely have more talent across the board, but you're in this game for a reason too. Looking down on the Big 12 is silly. You guys (and the Pac 12) are the only reason the ACC hasn't been the P5 doormat in the playoff era.

I suspect you win, but I'm not at all surprised by the line and would guess the end result will be in that ball park.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You've said a lot of misinformed things in this thread,

Dec 7, 2021, 3:11 PM [ in reply to Re: Not sure how you say we are supposed to stomp them ]

but I also want to correct you when you said they were successful with Seneca Wallace. In 2 seasons with Wallace at QB, Iowa State went 7-5 and then 7-7.

Last year Iowa State finished 9-3 and 9th in the country, which was their highest ranking ever at the time. (They were 7th to start this year.)

Their last 9 win season was in 2000 with Sage Rosenfels at QB.

Their only other 9+ win season was in 1906.

Conference BS is conference BS. I guess you buy in to all the crap sec fans spew too.

“Big 12 talent”? Ridiculous statement. I guess they’re talking about facing weak “A-she-she talent”?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Not sure how you say we are supposed to stomp them

Dec 6, 2021, 9:47 AM

Not buying into any conference BS. I grew up in Big 12 country, my family went to A&M and we had season tickets. I’ve seen far more meddling Big 12 football than I’d care to admit, and that was old Big 12, but the shadow of itself it is now. There is a wide talent gap between Big 12 to ACC or Big 10 talent, and then a chasm between the Big 12 and the SEC. There’s a reason that Big 12 expansion consists of AAC schools and independents. If there’s not a talent disparity, name 5 players on their roster that would crack the 2 deep at Clemson?

Maybe it’ll be a good game. Hopefully so.

Dec 6, 2021, 8:28 AM [ in reply to Re: One ESPN bowl game saying CU & ISU ]

Pretty sure, win or lose, it’s the part of bowl season where as soon as the game ends, another bowl game starts up.
Win and the 10 win streak stays intact, send the seniors off with a win and bring home the Cheez-it trophy, amidst a time of coaching transition.
Lose to a good team (Iowa St. has been good, although slightly underachieving this season) and people will just kind of say, OK, this really wasn’t Clemson’s year, and move on.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Nah….

Dec 7, 2021, 1:58 PM

I agree with you to an extent. In terms of perception, I think this game is more important to us as fans. The last thing we need after a disappointing regular season and losing BV is to end the year with a loss in a bowl game. On the other hand, a win keeps the 10 win streak alive, and most likely sees us finish in the top 15 of each ranking. I know the rankings don't mean much, but in terms of showing consistency in the program I think it would go a long way to say our disappointing season still saw us finish in the top 15.

Booth. Maybe Tyler Davis if he plans on entering the draft. Possibly XT. Goodrich should play considering he accepted a senior bowl invite. Whoever else announces a transfer prior to the bowl (Tyler Venables, etc.).
Could be a skeleton crew for sure!

Perhaps an opposite question will be if we'll get guys like Ngata and Williams back at receiver, and if DJ will be close to 100%. I think we'd all like to see DJ and the offense end this season on a positive with something to build on.
