Bkball midmajor top 10 this week...

Jan 20, 2022, 12:11 PM

Some of these teams have young coaches to keep an eye this and next season.

Niko Medved and Colorado State is currently 4th. They are current projected as a solid seed in the tourney from their body of work:

Sorry I meant 5th. Lunardi has them in his 8/9 game vs West Virginia now in his bracketology.

Also really like Valentine at Loyola of Chicago. Only 30 years old. Most likely if Brad is retained after this season but is let go next season, he probably will still be at Loyloa
for next season since this is just his first season there.

I really think Medved is going to get an offer somewhere after this season especially if he continues to have a strong season. His body of work already has earned a chance at a power 5 job.

if Clemson decides to replace Brad Brownell, why we have to settle for a coach at a mid major program?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Thry don't...

Jan 20, 2022, 12:34 PM

These are just some relartic options. Since Clemson has hired mid major coaches three of the last four coaching changes.

Plenty of high major 6 coaches can be considered if you count the Big East also.

Remember if Clemson does let go of Brad, the buy out will be in increment payments so they can certainly afford that and still offer a lucrative contract to a coach from any conference.

Not going to pay 4 million or more for the top guys. Even Shaka Smart makes 3 mill or more at Marquette

Maybe the Davidson coach would be a consideration. I am sure he is getting some age on him but that may not be bad.

Well he is a very good coach but has been there so long think he will retire there. He is from NY and was actually offered the St John's job pretty recently and didn't take it. Think that was the most likely job he would have taken.

Mckillop has been the head coach for 32 years and was born in 1950. At 72, doubt he'll be coaching much more than a couple years.

He’s had plenty of opportunities to leave Davidson but has made it clear he’s happy and that matters more than chasing the next job. He’s an outstanding coach but will retire and live in Davidson. I grew up 3 miles from Davidson and have always been a fan. If you e never seen a game there you need to go. Awesome place.

Live about 18 miles from Davidson. Wife and I attended several games during Curry's freshmen and soph years. Tickets were hard to get his last two. Went to a couple the 19 - 20 season prior to covid, but haven't been since. One game several years ago they honored former notable players like Fred Hetzel. Lefty Driesell was there. Ran into him going back to my seat after half time. Told him as we passed that we missed seeing him in Littlejohn. He responded, Yeah right! He was born Christmas Day 1931. What a gift that was!!

yeah, only about 3 or so of these coaches are market-accessible. A few of those are "better" platforms. St, Mary's, BYU, Loyola. Rice (BSU) and McKillup are going anywhere IMO. San Diego is kinda a lateral move only because it is a richer area for talent but ho-hum otherwise. That leaves:

McMahon might be the most interesting. Bad year this year but doing well but he took opver from Prohm who had them rolling. Would be a dice roll as it is both a scenario where he entered in a good spot and has dropped a bit.

Jeff Boals (Ohio) - Ok, his stock might actually allow him to find a better spot than us.

Medved - Has the Furman connection so his interest would be easy to feel out but he is a Minnesota guy so he might want to stay north/west. Fort Collins is a cool place so not sure it we fit.

Also Andy Kennedy really? I mean if you complain about the Brad Brownell "mediocre ceiling" well, Kennedy was even more capped at ol'miss.

I can’t see Clemson hiring a coach like Medved who barely has a winning record in his career! Do you?

You can't really look at that because he took over at all three stops and took a couple of seasons to rebuild it. He took two years to get the program established after they were losing at CSU and Furman. He only had 1 season at Drake but improved their wins from the previous season by 10 wins. He is considered a program builder.

Here is bio if you want to look at it specifically:

Furman barely won 11 game in the TWO seasons before Medved. They won 3 in his first season, then 11, then 19 then 21. Not a bad rebuild. His time at Drake is more questionable since it was just a season but it was a +12 win flip. It sounds like he did not mesh well with their new AD at the time or just did not like Drake - who know if that is a character flaw or just exiting a unhappy gig.He flipped CSU from 12 wins to 20 wins and has kept them there.

So he knows how to rebuild. His record comes mostly from rebuilding.
