Billy Wiles ---- Harvard Schollie vs Walk on Clemson

Apr 20, 2021, 3:58 PM

it sounds like an easy decision - Clemson he says was a dream school.

Real football - but also the possibility of not getting to play ( you never know that for sure )

Just curious what any other person would go through that thought process and come up with. .......

of course - I would never be in that position but what a cool set of OPPORTUNITIES to choose from !!!!!!

Just as a point of clarification - Harvard / Ivy League schools do not offer athletic scholarships. Much like the Vanderbilt baseball boogie man - they do offer significant economic aid (better than Vandy’s). If your family makes less than $65k I think Harvard is completely free. Of course you have to be accepted - which is impressive on it’s own. A lot of top tier students from wealthier families are choosing Honors programs at state schools like Clemson because if they are good enough to get into Ivy League they usually qualify for top scholarship packages but get nothing from Harvard. You can be pretty high up the annual income list and still not want to spend $300k on an undergrad degree.

Well, I would like to acknowledge the time you took to answer

You may have completely missed the point of the post though in choosing between a "Full Scholarship Offer" from Harvard and a "Walk on" offer from Clemson.

the point about REAL football also, Playing for a team that is in the NATTY picture and Ivy League games. Simply referencing the Article where it says "Full Scholarship offer". And ALSO while Academics are GREAT at Clemson - at Harvard you are much more likely to be roommates with a future President, world leader, Tycoon etc at Harvard.

Again what an AMAZING choice to make for a young kid who has the entire world of possibilities open to him.

I wasn't trying to undermine the decision just clarifying about Ivy League and scholarships. If he is good enough to get into Harvard (with or without athletics) then he is almost certainly going to be getting some kind of scholarship at Clemson - which makes the "full scholarship" versus "walk-on" a false equivalence. I know I'm being a stickler. Looks like a great kid who will be an asset to the program. I just think that particular bit in the write up is misleading.
