Welcome Yanks

Welcome to my friends who moved here from other areas of the great USA. To pick up and move here leaving behind your homes, and all yall have known must have taken courage, or at least desperation.
I am here to help. I understand most of yall will vote to make "here" like "there". I don't understand that, but ???
One thing yall might encounter is BEACH music. Yall might think it is a coastal thing, but the biggest fans and radio of "that" are in the UpState. In the day we locals all grew up visiting that coastal area. Now the coast does not resemble what we experienced. I would not venture there now with out CCW as it is a high crime area. How sad is that?
The official music of South Carolina is 'SHAG' related. That is not Blues, or Soul, or Rock, or ###, but it can be. It can be.
Locals know BEACH when they hear it, so just look to them.
I danced the Shag as a teen. At 40 bought tapes to teach me and my yank Bride to do it. Tom and Brenda Falls took us in to teach us at Groucho's. They are the best BEACH dancers in SC (and they love me). Watching them can bring me to tears.
All I can do to this day is drink beer and swish around. I still can't Shag on a level, but understand it, and the almost unseen moves the dancers make. It is pure magic.
I luv the music. No one has a bigger collection than do I.
Here is a "heads up" for my many yank friends who might want to fit in. BEACH is simple, but not all of it is. Just say your favorite is Billy Stewart. Most kids today never heard of him, so a star for you!

Tug, it’s partly because of the yanks that the coast isn’t like what you grew up seeing. As a coastal local, I spent almost every day of every summer out on Folly,Sullivan’s, or IOP. And the yanks have dern near ruined IOP to the point of no return. In fact the entire lowcountry is in serious jeopardy of turning blue. I don’t mind the yanks. Most are just regular good people, but if you come here, don’t try and muck it up. Embrace it.

Hey Run - I grew up on Johns Island and we used to go on Kiawah when one family owned the entire island and there was only one house on it. Yep - how times have changed! There are definitely too many people in the Charleston area now for this old country boy so I live in a relatively rural part of the upstate now.

man JI is a shell of what it was. my grandfather had about 20 acres many many years ago. Now the yanks just clear cut one of the last largest plots of land for a 10000 home development. 4000 acres gone. some of the best Turkey and Deer hunting in the state.
What gets me even more is these transplants come to john’s island and then act like they own it and have lived there for ages.
When the tomato shed goes it’ll be all but citified

They have mucked up where they come from to the point that is no loner possible to live there normally. Guess what, now they want to come here and be#amned if they don't want to muck us up. Either leave your politics behind or sleep in the bed you made.

and a longtime member of SOS. So, BEACH music was always playing in our household. Her and my Dad could really cut-a-rug!
I still listen to it everyday here in Switzerland, thanks to Sirius Radio. The channel is called CAROLINA SHAG.

Well Tug, Fatman is not quite correct. His moniker was Fat Boy the title of one of his finest songs..."Baby here I am...She was in love with a fat boy."

Darn yanks, they even name colleges in the upstate after them....
That being said, one of my Pennsylvania friends earned some points.
When I asked them why they came south they said:
"To see what we won"..... Deeeyamm, Yankee. Ok. Fair enough.
What what do I know, I am just some Virginian.

Could be fixed with just 2 laws.
1. All yanks are required to go deep sea fishing within 2 hrs of arrival in a southern state.
2. It is illegal to return to shore from deep sea fishing with a tank.

My mom made all of her 3 children (1 girl, 2 boys)… I’m the baby…. Learn how to shag when we were growing up. No lessons! She made us dance with her at every wedding, oyster roast, or Summer event when beach music was playing. My parents just had their 47th wedding anniversary, and it still makes me smile ear to ear when I see them dance. I learned my Dad’s signature shag move when I was about 17.
The ladies love it!
