Billy Napier

Oct 28, 2013, 10:55 PM

I know I am a young buck around here, I only became a Clemson fan when I got accepted into the university two years ago, but why did we fire Billy Napier? On all the recruiting sites he is always listed as one of the top recruiters, and recruited a lot of talent to this university, and other than one bad statistical season in 2010, he didn't look that bad as a coordinator. It's just curious to me to see Florida State and Alabama fight over a guy that we fired.

Too much too soon. Wasn't ready to be OC but didn't have any

Coach on staff to show him the ropes. We all hated to lose him but it was best for both sides at the time.

Napier was a good recruiter, but no where near ready to be an OC. He may be good in another role, but a demotion didn't sound like an option.

He wasn't put in a position to succeed but Dabo learned an important lesson there.

Sorry I don't know everything that went into that decision, but I always thought that Billy would be a good coach someday. He has great potential, just needs to go through the growing pains of learning and getting experience.

Billy Napier..friend of Dabo, A-A QB @ Furman, great guy &

as good of a recruiter..but Dabo had to let him go since just too green around the collar to be running an O at Clemson..so in comes Chad from mid-west via Texas!

He was a battlefield promotion to OC when Dabo took over

Oct 28, 2013, 11:04 PM

Went from being a TE coach to calling the offense. He was able to put up good numbers in 2009 because of Spiller, Ford, Michael Palmer, etc. The next year it was pretty obvious he wasn't ready to be OC. And there was pressure on Dabo because people where still skeptical of him as a coach and 2010 was the first losing season in over a decade, so Dabo knew he needed to make a change. Napier was a heck of a recruiter, just not ready to be an OC

I would say it was probably too soon to hire him for a position like offensive coordinator, he still had some learning to do. After a bad offensive year in 2010 pressure was on Dabo to make changes or his job was in jeopardy. Therefore, he fires Napier from OC and it probably would have been a little too much for Napier to take a demotion, so he parted ways with us altogether.

I heard from a Bank president here in cootlumbia that is a good friend of Dabo and his family. He told me that Billy and Dabo parted company with no hard feelings. And that the both of them are still good friends.

Dabo wasn't much help to him. You had Dabo and Napier and neither were offensive geniuses but both tried to run the offense.

We all saw what happened. I thought Napier was a bit of a scape goat for Dabo due to both being good recruiters yet Dabo a bit older and once given the HC job was going to stay. I think either could have kept Clemson's recruiting going strong but Jeff Scott was the big winner when Napier was sent packing

He turned into the hot shot young guy getting in good with recruits and he was able to shine

Will be interesting to see who comes in if Morris leaves. I keep hearing how Scott is full of Morris' offense and knows it as well. Will Clemson promote a young Napier type guy, this time with the knowledge base. or feel compelled to take a big name.

I think a big name needs to come in due to Dabo not being quite there yet as a HC. Venables knows more D than Dabo can ever understand and has been at a big time program. Morris is a hot shot up and coming coach so neither will take crap from a young newly minted head coach. He can leave them alone and recruit and be the face of the program which he is good at. Go young and when things go bad a game or 2 or a half or 2 and he feels the need to jump in the OCs business, the young guy can't fight back and tell him to hit the road. Morris and V will tell him to focus on what he does best or actually bring enough knowledge that he never steps into their business.

Anyone who understand management or has run anything understands this philosophy. Some can bring in a young guy and mentor him and bring him along slowly knowing you have to add extra time in to mentor. Others say, hey this project is too big I need a hot shot I can point in the direction and see them when complete knowing it will be done right or at least better than I can do it while focused on other equally important tasks

Long answer to Napier hitting the road as a scape goat because someone had to go and it wasn't going to be Dabo. Glad he is doing well and will be back in a big program soon
