I didn't realize he had it so tough after his wife's tragic accident. He only made $42,000 as a US Senator in 1973. Nevermind that $42K in 1973 would be equal to $288,000 in 2022 dollars, it makes a great story.

He had to buy an old farmhouse so his sister could move in to help w/ the boys. It was actually a mansion, but "old farmhouse" just sounds better.
