Best player in college football

Jan 6, 2021, 10:35 AM

I keep seeing people upset over Lawrence not winning the Heisman and saying he's the best player in college football. I agree with him being the best player, but the best player doesn't always win an award like this, and the best player doesn't always have the best overall season.

Take our game against Ohio State for instance. I think we'd all agree that Lawrence is a better player than Fields. However, I think most of us at least would agree that Fields was the better player on that night, and thus was deserving of being the player of the game. I don't think anyone would say Lawrence was robbed of the player of the game award based simply on him being the best player in the country.

Lawrence had another great season, and I'm disappointed it didn't work out for him to win it this year. However, Smith had a monster season while putting up video game numbers, and is very deserving of the award. I think it's ok and natural to be disappointed, but I think it's going too far to say Lawrence was robbed.

I also keep seeing people mention Lawrence being taken out early in games while implying that Smith was putting up a ton of stats in garbage time of games. I think that's a bit unfair unless you're actually able to show comparisons to the amount of snaps each player had in the 4th quarter of games, or number of snaps each player had overall in the 2nd half of blowouts. It's not like Lawrence was taken out at halftime of every single game we played this season.

I know this post likely won't be popular. I'm just not a fan of complaining when things don't go our way, or of throwing out statements as if they're fact without any evidence to back them up.

Fun fact - Only 9 of the 86 Heisman winners were enshrined in the NFL Hall of Fame. You would think they could fall out of bed each day and do better than that.

sports writers and past winners vote. They need a committee like the CFP. I respect the past winners but they have no business voting. That's like letting a Masters Champion tee it up in his 70s and 80s.

I disagree that Smith had a monster season and put up video game numbers.

His yardage was good enough to be ranked 34th best ever. He wasn't really utilized in the return game, or at another position, so he should be compared simply as a receiver, and in that mindset he had a really good season, but nothing earth shattering compared to others in previous seasons. As a full career he didn't have an overly impressive one either.

Jamarr Chase had a better season last year and didn't even finish in the top 10 in Heisman voting.
