Best decade for rock music?

The 70s has a strong case, I’m starting to lean towards the 80s. AC/DC really took off, Van Halen, Guns N’ Roses, Metallica all at their peak. The Rolling Stones and Aerosmith had a resurgence, The Who had some good releases. Eagles were peaking, Pink Floyd’s the wall even though released and 79, was gaining a lot of acclaim in 1980. Throw in the Talking Heads, Springsteen, Billy Joel and Tom Petty hitting his peak, the 80s were solid.

Late 70s and very early 80s. But to pick just one decade, 70s - no contest. Not just for rock, but music in general.

I was a child of the 70’s and a teenager/Clem student in the 80’s. I’ve gone back and forth on this, but have to give overall music nod to the 70’s. Love rock and roll, but not necessarily heavy metal. Those hair bands of the late 80’s were all from the same mold.

There has not been any good "rock' and roll since 1965. Now there are bands who played good music, but screaming words you can't understand aren't music. It's like hip hop or rap, just crap! One of the reasons the USA is where it is today.

people don't pay to watch dudes standing up on stage tapping their foot, and standing still the whole time. they want to be entertained. I still stand by my opinion that The Beatles were one of the most overrated bands of all time. just really bland

Depends on your definition of Rock! If you consider Billy Joel Rock, how about Roy Orbinson ( After all Springsteen was featured in one of Roy's last performances) ? You mention the Stones, but not The Beatles, if Tom Petty is Rock, what is Elvis. You like Pink Floyd, I like The Moody Blues .My wife loves The Allman Brothers Band but I like The Animals. I wouldn't give you a plug nickel for Metallica but I love The Who. And right now I couldn't tell you who was in Van Halen and or which one was Guns and which one was Roses! But I also love performers like Gene Pitney, Billy Joe Royal, The Shadows( Apache),The Bee Gees .And how about Clapton, or Chuck Berry? I like both of them ,but have never much cared for Prince. So I guess it depends, on part ,in which decade you were born. So for me ,being born in 1950, it is and will always be the 60's.

I know one thing it sure isn't from this century...
Best decade for innovation, skill, & song writing is the 1970's. I like some of the 80's and 60's as well. It's been down hill from the mid 90's as autotune has taken the skill away.

I agree with this completely, also moving from analog to digital has ruined recorded music. Absolutely no depth in the sound.

you are just listening to radio rock, or "butt rock" as it is called. "rock" is such a broad term nowadays, there are so many subgenres out there and honestly its stupid. but if you want to hear some skill you should listen to bands like polyphia. those guys are some of the best musicians I have ever seen. They mostly just play instrumental stuff so they don't have a singer.

From about 1964 to 74...no other decade can compare...

We had the peak of soul music, the British invasion led by the Beatles & Stones, the advent of hard rock with the likes of Led Zepellin, and to top it off...southern rock led by Allman Brothers, Marshall Tucker and Skynyrd.
The 80's were pretty good, but they pale in comparison!

Close to what I was thinking - 1965 to 1974 #1 and 1975 to 1984 #2 with a smattering after that.

also a big minus to the 80's for the advent of rap!
And before I get accused of just being an old fart who likes nothing but the old stuff, there is some great new stuff out there, you just have to look for it, like the Marcus King Band. He's from Greenville, and his drummer is from Clemson...a great drummer, by the way...
