Clemson Faculty doesn’t support Conservatives

Jun 29, 2021, 10:55 AM

Free Speech should be allowed for flourish on college campuses. Why are professors and teaching assistants allowed to openly post their attempts to shut it down? What is happening to Clemson? These are people who are in charge of our children’s education. Spending our tax dollars and donations while bragging about trying it “shut down” attendance for Conservative events.

Thankfully neither one is actually faculty, just staff. One works in financial aid and the other is director of inclusion & equity.

Firstly, old news. Wasn't this months ago?

Secondly, I think you're implying two things: 1) that liberals should not harbor views conflicting with your own; and 2) that conservatives never stoop to equally egregious behavior.

You are also aware that Jefferson and his supporters maligned George Washington? Some of it by inventing malicious rumors? So, dirty tricks in politics has always been with us, and given human nature, always will be.

It has nothing to do with academia, except as a subset of our greater dysfunction.

Re: they are employees of the University

Jun 29, 2021, 11:42 AM

You used the word *should* - man that is a whole ball of wax there.

Yeah, folks should and shouldn't do a lot of things however, that is part of the concept of "freedom".

This isn't the first time that groups block other or the other way around. Of course, being liberals, they think small while the "faux-conservatives" - use state legislatures.(hate to even use the term conservatives since conservatism is political dead)

I disagree that any activity outside of the work role, they should be able to behave in a free and unrestricted manner. If "employees" want to act like aye-holes outside of their job task, well that is their right - especially at the state level. It is that "should" word. It is a recommendation, not a requirement and that is a key since the state should not silence/inhibit actions outside of the job take (even if at the physical place of employment)

Re: no argument that ethics and professionalism are dead

Jun 29, 2021, 1:33 PM

Ethics is situational and relative. It is not hard and fast.

Thus why you think Northeners don't understand the South and vice versa.

Are there universal ethics? Yes, but they are very few (don't commit murder). Everything else depends on your society, culture, and local ideals.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: no argument that ethics and professionalism are dead

Jun 29, 2021, 1:57 PM

*It depends* and yes, this is the academic answer.

Depending on how you approach "ethics". That does not mean that is relative- unless you are a relativist. But chances are, there are structures driving your decisions and the "correct" choice is dependent on the structure you choose.

For example, the two biggest "paths" are either John Stuart Mills Utilitarianism or a Kantian deontological path. There are other "paths" but I will keep it simple. Basically, with Ult, the "ends justify the means" and the ethical decision is based on the outcome that "produces the greatest good".
Deontological is "duty based" and thus the results are irrelevant and the only good can come from the act itself. Thus it is mostly dependent on where you want to place the value on the action. I am a deontological-pragmatist mean that I am duty based up to the point in which the action would be considered truly absurd. Think of it as this: Killing a person is a morally wrong act. However if given the choice to be killed along with my family or to kill a person responsible for my death, then I will kill the threat. However, it is not about the outcome but rather I have a duty to my family for self preservation that trump the "killing" choice. Rather I have a duty to be be passive in that situation. It isn't outcome based but rather a leveled duty scheme. I *should* find any and all ways to avoid that but when that die is cast, then there is a pragmatic element. That being said, I would consider the ethical question of killing baby hitler to be a morally wrong action since I am not a JSM Ult looking at the results of the action, just the act itself

One of my most respected *living* moral philosophers is Andrew Light, I worked briefly with him and while I don't agree with everything, he is fairly spot on. https://philosophy.gmu.edu/people/alight1
His take on environmental values is highly useful IMO

That is total ######## and you know it! This is how people like you justify violence. If you call Trump supporters Nazis then it’s OK to assault them in public because Nazis are dangerous and should be assaulted and killed. It’s people on the far left running around America killing conservatives. And it’s being rationalized and justified by insane people like you with ridiculous comments like you just posted. My God you are just ignorant and stupid. You are clearly a product of the modern society. Martin Luther King would find you pathetic!

Re: Libs work in academia and become career politicians...

Jun 29, 2021, 1:44 PM

disagree - the path to academia (at a tier 1 research institution) is abusive, petty, and just plain bonkers.

I stepped out into the "real world" because of that insanity. I could not look at the golden handcuff (tenure review process) as anything healthy - and it isnt. Everyone coming out of that is tough, and likely not normal either. Then again, the phd process is insanity. If you think that they can't cut it, well shrug ... A few of us call ourselves "reformed academics" and we are "highly effective" in our paths. As I call it, I get to "practice" my field with "cheat codes".

I think about 1/2 of career politicians are not liberals.... ;)

FYI, the reason why you find a lot of liberals in higher academia is because often "liberals" value things that are not reward/monetary related (ie not a direct payoff). They are more motivated by other non-direct mechanism. It is not exclusive to "liberals" but since you aren't going to be rich in most fields in academia, the "payoff" has to be intrinsic within that field. If the payoff is "cause" related, then you have a big liberal population.

Keep in mind that prior to about the 1960s, especially pre 30s. most academics were surprisingly conservative (and then politics in the US flipped - heck the parties basically nearly flipped since then).

Also, you have a lot more libertarians (than the standard population) in academia as well, just walk into a classical economics department. You just don't have the new faux-conservatives because they hate education, can not entertain rational thought when presented with contrary evidence, and that would be self defeating.

Jun 29, 2021, 11:37 AM

Conservatism, like religion, thrives on a persecution complex. It helps raise money and draw in people who like to pretend their rights are being trampled all the time.

“Hollywood is trying to destroy us!”

“The ‘Left’ Coast and the Northeast and the big cities are trying to erase our southern/rural heritage!”

“If you’re a liberal you get away with everything! If you’re a conservative you go straight to jail for everything!”

“We’re not allowed to say ‘Merry Christmas!’”

“Schools are indoctrinating our children!”

On and on it goes. So just look at this as a recruiting opportunity. And remember to pass this story along with as little context as possible. Perhaps even post it on Facebook using ALL CAPS.

“The man is out to get you”

It's true that I have engaged in discussing politics on non-amphitheater boards.

However, the tone and verocity of discussions has infiltrated nearly all posts and i can no longer just read normal Clemson sports updates without someone (on either side) talking about vaccines, liberals/conervatives, or whatever and I think this is ruining Tigernet personally

So going forward I will endeavor to keep my comments, and kindly remind others, to put politics off the main boards which make Tigernet great.
