So if we are so committed to the ACC when the HECK do

they demand ESPN and others to rework the TV contract to make sure our money and our prime-time exposure is on par with the other conferences? And when will the ACC make sure we have multiple paths to the championship playoff games? And when will the basketball schools make sure they upgrade and care about the sport of football?
Come on committed institutions--time to put up or shut up.

1) The presidents who signed off on this are being told that the TV money and paths to the championship are going to be there, and that things are happening that will create a more level playing field for the ACC.
OR
2) The presidents who signed off on this are perfectly happy being a second-tier football conference.
Which do you suppose it is?

would be to get rid of Swofford. The TV deals that he has cut are awful....but hey we've still got Raycom. The bowl deal appears to be worse than the TV deal.
Kinda wish that the BE had emerged as the 5th wheel and let the ACC dissolve...we'd probably have landed in a real conference.

1. What do you think the chances are of that happening?

2. What are the odds the ACC remains relevant as a football conference if that doesn't happen, and we don't get comparable TV money?
I know this involves a lot of speculation, just interested to see what people are thinking.

1. I'd guess 35%, really depends on the details of the play-offs. I think the ACC needs to do something drastic and it won't be with ESPN, and I know FOX is actively trying to become a competitor, so that could help.
2. Honestly, I think there's a threshold where more money won't do anything. They'll just redistribute the funds to other sports. I think Clemson is above that threshold, and Virginia Tech, FSU, Miami, Georgia Tech, Louisville, UNC, & Pitt. So I think we'll always hold relevance, especially when the tides finally turn in our favor, which history says will occur.

you're really going to have to think about it?
I mean, it's not like you can throw money at players, which is against the NCAA.
We have brand new practice facilities and the new West Endzone is amazing. We're not hurting on money at all.

money than another school gave you a competitive advantage.
There is no doubt that we fell behind in facillities for some time and it obviously hurt us. Was that due to a lack of money or just a failure to utilize existing funds? Either way, it seems that even though things are great right now, we could be more likely to fall behind again than some of the huge money generators we compete against. I don't know.

Maybe even a month or so, until we found out what that championship was worth.
We are, and will be, paper Tigers so long as we are relegated to this basketball conference.

Because of one bad play in the Orange Bowl?
Dec 6, 2012, 5:18 PM
|
|
Not to sound like Tommy Bowden, but that's why WV won the game. It was a 14-pt shift and changed the game. I've never seen a momentum shift of that magnitude in a football game. Not to mention the play should've been called dead on forward progression and shouldn't have been a fumble. It was that one play we lost the Orange Bowl, and it was to a good WV team.
And what has this year done to change your mind? We looked at this season as a temporary one to get to 2013. Most people assumed an 8-9 win season, we got 10, it was a good season. None of us are happy we lost to South Carolina once again, but we still exceeded expectations.
You are constantly an overly negative poster, step off the ledge and look at things logically. It seems to be something you cannot do very well.

LOGICALLY we've beaten one team with a pulse
Dec 6, 2012, 5:50 PM

over the last two years (and that after they sustained multiple key injuries), gotten blown out four times, dominated in our house by our feathered former whipping boys AGAIN and showed no real progress beyond being able to consistently beat cupcakes.
LOGICALLY the ACC is a fading football conference with an uncertain future.
You are constantly a 'status-quo' poster, believing that everything is just fine and dandy regardless of the reality of the situation. You think ten wins over subpar competition means we've 'turned the corner.' You think the mass of money being pumped into college football has no impact on the cyclical nature of the sport, and yet you have the gall to sit there and say I'M not logical? LOL.
Stop setting the bar so low. People like you drag Clemson down with them.

Here's a quick lesson in economics
Dec 6, 2012, 4:11 PM

The bog money will come when the product supports it. You don't demand espn give you money, you earn it. As long as the ACC has terrible teams, small crowds and little interest outside of local townships there will be no big money. ESPN would laugh at Swofford if he demanded SEC money. Wake up.
