I’ll say it. I thought DJ did Ok tonight

Dec 29, 2021, 9:52 PM

Yes, he had a tipped INT, but I saw a few intangibles I hadn’t saw much all season. He kept drives alive with some timely scrambles and checkdowns. We won the game. For me that’s progress.

Of you say so.
I saw a QB who had no confidence and play calling that said the coaches had no confidence in him either.

If DJ wants to play QB in 2022, he needs to lose 30 lbs and work on his agility. He is just plain SLOW, and doesn't move well.

No one is proclaiming him as Joe Montana, but it was a decent game: He completed 2/3 of his passes, had a couple of key runs, and the one INT was the tipped ball.

Re: I’ll say it. I thought DJ did Ok tonight

But most of his completed passes were behind the line of scrimmage, none were high yardage, and his "tipped" INT was only tipped because he threw it right at the defender.

2/3 of your passes is not impressive when its all screens and 3 yard passes. I dont think he attempted a pass over 10 yards. Coaches had absolutely no confidence in his ability and didn't even test it. They knew he couldn't do it and played safe.

But one must acknowledge that interception completely changed the complexion of the game. We seemed to have the game in hand then had to hold on for dear life.

I've gotta give half the credit for the INT to the play call. With a 17 point lead late in the 3rd quarter and the ball inside the 20, I would think that a running play would have been called for... especially given how we were starting to run effectively against a very tired ISU defense. I'm not making excuses for DJU, though... regardless of the play call, he shouldn't have thrown where he did.

Thanks to the defense for giving this crazy season a happy ending. Good job Wes Goodwin!!

Yep. He kept quite a few plays alive and improvised better than any game this year. Started 6/6 and if Shipley hadn’t dropped the “chest pass” he would have had a certain first down.

DJ still had his damaged index finger. Context matters; no one can reasonably expect DJ to be zinging T.Lawrence type passes with that finger in disrepair.

Taking into account DJ's bad index finger (and play calling that clearly took that limitation into account), DJ had a fine game ... easily his best of the 2021 season.

Re: I’ll say it. I thought DJ did Ok tonight

very true but he wasnt zinging it like last year even before his finger got hurt. I dont know what the issue is there though. IN fairness the entire O cast hasnt been nearly as good as last year. And it has been a rotating cast of characters all year

Meh, coaches called the game around his ‘capabilities’….. minimizing chances for error. Of course he still lofted two ill advised passes, one caught, one intercepted. He still stares down his receivers and really slow with all decisions. Good luck to him in the competition with Cade next year.

If Ship, Pace or Mafah could consistently complete a 10 yd pass as wildcat, Tiger O would be improved immediately.

Intersting concept, but would not hold up over long season. But one bowl game? Yes!

Because of DJ, the game plan had to be dumbed down...

Dec 29, 2021, 10:12 PM

to a tree stump. The passing game was limited to something a dead corpse could execute. We won the game in spite of DJ, not because of him.

If this is what you call progress, it will take 50 years for DJ to become an average college QB.

The only progress I observed was DJ moving his feet in the pocket and buying himself time on a few plays. His accuracy was terrible, as usual. Literally everything seemed hard to him.

I expect Cade will be the starter by mid season and DJ will transfer. Shades of Bryant and Lawrence.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Because of DJ, the game plan had to be dumbed down...

Dec 14, 2015, 5:56 PM

Hate that comparison because Bryant was 10x the QB that DJ has been.

We'd be in the national championship game this year with Bryant and probably favored.

I'm saying that because the teams in the playoffs are weaker this year and we could get by with Bryant managing the game and running with our defense.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'll say this...

Dec 29, 2021, 10:13 PM

it is abundantly clear, regardless of what anyone says, the coaching staff has zero confidence in DJ and the play calling on the next to last possession, and throughout most of the game for that matter, more than supports it. His decision making ability is dispossessed, he plays scared (i.e., fear of making a mistake), and he's still staring down the receivers because he's not assessing the defenses fast enough to progress through his reads.

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.

Re: I'll say this...

Dec 29, 2021, 10:40 PM

Yep. I hated what they did (or didn't do) on that next to last possession. Three straight ultra- conservative runs. Reminds me of Notre Dame last year, when a first down would have iced it. Tonight we survived. Agree, very little confidenCe in DJ.

If we had Perdy we would be in the playoffs right now.

DJ finishes the season rated 145 out of 150 in the nation and still the worst QB we have had in the last 30+ years.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I’ll say it. I thought DJ did Ok tonight

Dec 29, 2021, 10:48 PM

I’ll agree but is “OK” good enough to be the starting QB at Clemson? Seemed the coaches only tried to make sure he didn’t lose the game, not that he tried to win it. I think he managed the game better than usual but still had his ### moment with the INT that turned a potential blowout into another nail biter. I don’t see any way he holds off Cade next year. Best case is that he improves enough to let Cade mature into the system but not sure I see that happening. Good to get the win. That’s the main thing. 10-3 in a down year ain’t bad.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I’ll say it. I thought DJ did Ok tonight

Dec 29, 2021, 10:52 PM

I was really happy with how they called plays tonight with DJ in. You dont attack the safetys with DJ and he didn't do it once all game. Our coaches know DJ wont win us the game with his arm.

I think if we keep game managing with DJ we can still win 10 games any year as long as we play field position and rely on our defense. I also dont think he is going to beat out Cade. I'm #### sure they want a QB with the ability to pass downfield.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I’ll say it. I thought DJ did Ok tonight

Dec 30, 2021, 2:17 AM [ in reply to Re: I’ll say it. I thought DJ did Ok tonight ]

Agreed. I think if Clemson had any top 50% QB, we'd likely be 11-1 and in the playoffs (I think 12-0 is possible, but the team needed more than Perdy to effectively move the ball on UGA, that was domination).

DJ is actually the worst QB statistically in Clemson history, if you compare him against his peers (since it's hard to equate passing today to the 1960s). The second worst is Streeter.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He's still clunky, but don't know how the knee or finger are

Dec 29, 2021, 10:55 PM

impacting him right now. He still make some ill-advised throws, and doesn't read the RPO well. I'm hoping he gets healthy and makes improvements this spring!

Re: I’ll say it. I thought DJ did Ok tonight

Dec 30, 2021, 12:16 AM

Some of those completions shouldn't have happened due to thrown behind, way up high or in complete coverage and our receivers had luck on theor side and were able to pull it down/in. DJ has had an entire season to stay up till 1am practicing after games, but the facts show little improvement. Still telegraphing every pass, slowest psrson on the team lumbering through plays, and situational awareness or lack thereof. I'm sure he's a great guy with a big heart. But a job is a job and in the real world if you don't perform, your either fired or replaced. I'll take a 10 win season anyday. Any bowl win is as important as a playoff game. I just don't see him changing any after having so much time to work on things. A QB with no speed and inaccuracies is a dagger to the QB heart. I hate it but it is what it is. Time to usher Cade in. Just my thoughts. Great win tonight and hope everyone no has a great new year!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I’ll say it. I thought DJ did Ok tonight

Dec 30, 2021, 2:07 AM

I pretty much agree with all of this. My only complaint is with the "10 win season anyday." I'm pleased we reach 10 wins, which I did not expect after those first struggle wins. But there's no excuse for Clemson with the resources and talent it has had to struggle so much is virtually all of its games, when it came in picked by many as the national champion, and the ACC is so horrible this year (I mean, Virginia Tech and Louisville were embarrassing and our champ is likely going to get whipped. It looks like 2-4 is the best we can likely do, which is bad for our recruiting). In the ACC right now, we should not settle for 10 wins.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I’ll say it. I thought DJ did Ok tonight

Dec 30, 2021, 2:01 AM

You sunshine pumpers just keep getting crazier. He threw only screens and very short passes. Name one of these "intangibles" you saw? First drive, he had a 3rd and 1 conversion on a designed run. Not a scramble. He had no other conversions on scrambles the first half (you can count the total conversions on one hand). On the touchdown drive, he converted that 4th and 1 on a designed run, not a scramble. He ended the game with 4 out of 5 drives and 3 and outs, and the other had one first down from the horse collar.

Look, I was DJ's biggest fan. I saw Trevor's passing get worse under Streeter (though he was still very, very good), and thought DJ would be a better pure passer. It's just not happening. You're imagining things.

Deshaun and Trevor both got better each year under Streeter***

Dec 30, 2021, 2:06 AM

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Deshaun and Trevor both got better each year under Streeter***

Dec 30, 2021, 2:14 AM

That's wrong. Deshaun hired a private passing coach that he worked with exclusively and Streeter had essentially no involvement. What happened to him is irrelevant. You must be new because people constantly remarked about TL's poor accuracy and all his picks his last two years. His performance against elite defenses declined significantly. He became a better player for our offense, as he learned the offense and gained leadership skills. But his passing degraded, especially his downfield mechanics, which the Jaguars are working with him on right now. He was still very good because he had a huge amount of natural talent. But you can't support your argument if you look at the actual stats against good teams/defenses.

And how about Kelly Bryant (never improved as a passer at all), Chase (who became a decent passer only after leaving Clemson), Zerrick Cooper (same), Hunter Johnson (never really did anything at Northwestern either), Nick Schuessler, or Puma? That's a lot of QBs, most of whom regressed.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Deshaun and Trevor both got better each year under Streeter***

Dec 30, 2021, 3:41 AM

The TV announcers noted we would not throw the ball downfield and the DB's had moved up close. Having said that DJ is still needed. Cade is smallish and will probably take a year to learn and get stronger. If Cade surprises to the upside then by all means play him.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I’ll say it. I thought DJ did Ok tonight

Dec 31, 2021, 10:07 AM

Agree with your analysis. Doesn’t matter how well he played the scouts and coaches on this site will complain anyway. The comparisons to TL is just plain stupid. TL won a national championship with a great team and regressed from there. Lost in the CFP championship game (blowout to LSU) and lost in CFP playoff to Ohio State blow out game, very poor performance. But no one said a word about how he regressed. And isn’t playing well as a pro. Matter fact he is still regressing. 14 picks and the 4 worst rating in the NFL. No doubt he will get better… but the bottom line is not an easy game. When Will Sweeney is starting receiver, that means you have no deep threat… period.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I’ll say it. I thought DJ did Ok tonight

Dec 31, 2021, 10:36 AM

You may be right. However if we had Sam Howell as QB this year we would have for sure been in the playoffs. That statement tells me we have got to get much better at the QB position if we going to get back to playoffs. You can’t in my opinion with a Natty unless you have an elite QB
