The 'brawl' with coots. Anyone else remember?

Jun 1, 2017, 10:51 AM

The day before was when the "Malice at the Palace", between the Pacers & Pistons, occurred. I remember watching the news coverage on TV, in front of the Esso, while tailgating before the uscJr game. The first college football game my wife had ever been to btw.

The scene was disgusting, but little did we know, that bunch of losers from cola would try to get their fifteen minutes of similar fame later that afternoon. Sending Granny Holtz out with a bang and costing us a bowl game. And people wonder why we hate them so much...

Here's a link to the old news footage.

Why do dogs always race to the door when the doorbell rings? It's almost never for them.

I remember $CU got their a$$es kicked twice that day***

and though Yusef probably shouldn't have done it, when he threw the gamecock helmet up into the stands afterwards he received an appreciative laughter from the crowd and became an instant legend. Maybe Tommy B should've tried Yusef out on the kicking team team, too.....:~)

Tommy should have definitely left Reggie in

Jun 1, 2017, 11:16 AM

One of the biggest bone-headed coaching decisions he made while at Clemson.

When Yusef held the chicken helmet up in front of the student section we all went berserk. I loved it.

He did. You know there were more people "there" now than were actually "there" then. ??

It was domination from the start, with that bone crunching hit on the opening kickoff

and embarrassed for my university. Its easy to make light of, but that's the ##### that Dabo has gotten rid of. Tommy did a great job cleaning up the program from Tommy West, but this nonsense would never happen under Dabo.
That said, the refs should have had this under better control earlier in the game. You could feel this coming.

It all started with coots coaching staff. Go to fgf and get on them snowflake. I was very proud of our guys that day. You don't walk in the valley and disrespect us

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Why would i go to fgf? Nice mature name calling by the way.

Jun 1, 2017, 1:44 PM

I'm a grad and my alma mater's image will always be as important to me as wins and losses. If you want guys that are easily baited and can't rise above cheap shots and trash talk with their play on the field, then this Dabo led Clemson team isn't for you.. (See at Miami 2 yrs ago).

Its not about being soft, its about kicking their ### on the scoreboard (see Ohio St), not an undisciplined bunch brawling on the field. Again, Dabo would never tolerate that and you know it... it wouldn't even be allowed happen in the first place. Its why Dabo is the ultimate winner.

So you keep on pulling for undisciplined fighters but talk #### about Scar players and Columbia, certainly no hypocrisy there, and I'll applaud a well disciplined team that wins on the field.

I totally agree you could see it coming before the game was even kicked off when those dirtpeckers ran onto the field and waited on Clemson at bottom of the hill before the game. Total disrespect and they got what was coming to them. Go Tigers!!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

yeah

Jun 1, 2017, 11:59 AM

That was a pi**ing contest. Better forgotten forever.

'I Cannot Sanction Your Buffoonery'

I still don't think this was that big of a deal

Jun 1, 2017, 12:47 PM

The media spent all weekend covering the Pistons/Pacers brawl which was a big deal because fans got involved...and that is a MAJOR safety issue for both players and fans.

The Clemson/South Carolina fight shouldn't have happened...but there have been far wilder brawls in college football that have received zero punishment. LSU/Miami...Miami/Florida International...even BYU got into a brawl after their bowl game a couple of years ago.

The only reason this fight was a big deal was because it happened after the Pacers/Pistons brawl...and the media lumped this fight in with that one, to push their "Violence in sports" narrative...and it cost Clemson their bowl game. If this fight had happened in any other season, I bet there would have been minimal coverage...and maybe a few players get suspended for a game against the next season (against a team like the Citadel most likely).

Again, Im not saying the fight was right...Im just saying it got blown out of proportion because of the weekend that it happened

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't know about that

Jun 1, 2017, 12:52 PM

It was a fairly big and intense brawl that spanned the whole field and involved many many players. Our brawl with SC is with those others you mentioned in the handful of "big" college football brawls in the past 20 years.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

But how many of those other brawls cost a team their bowl?

Jun 1, 2017, 2:07 PM

The Clemson vs. South Carolina fight was a fight...no denying that. But if you were around during that time, the fight was shown on every news channel because it happened right after the Pistons/Pacers brawl... Not just ESPN, but the national channels (CBS, NBC, ABC) had news stories covering it.

During all of those other brawls that I mentioned ...they may have mentioned it on ESPN, or on the college football highlight shows...but they weren't talking about it on 60 minutes. And nobody mentioned it weeks after those fights happened.

The reason Clemson and South Carolina cancelled their bowl games, was because of all of the nation publicity the Universities were getting.

No other brawl has received the coverage that South Carolina-Clemson got...and the reason it got blown out of proportion was because of the weekend that it happened.

You made the point I should have mentioned.
This post was meant to be about that time frame as a whole.
Thanks

We would have never sacrificed the bowl game

Jun 1, 2017, 1:56 PM

if we both weren't 6-5 and facing a crap bowl in somewhere like Birmingham or Shreveport.

If either of us would have been looking at a Jan 1 or upper tier bowl, they would have suspended a couple of players and been done with it. That was the biggest chickencrap PC decision I've ever seen our weak kneed administration make. They should have said "We've looked at it and its clear that our players were defending themselves against a bunch of thugs. We'll see you after the bowl."

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

that was the last game I ever sat on The Hill

Jun 1, 2017, 2:05 PM

for some reason I don't remember, I wasn't going to go to that game, so I gave my tickets to friends. Then at last minute, decided to go. By myself, so got a lone ticket and chose to sit on The Hill.

I saw the punk Cluckers gather at the bottom of The Hill and try to start something early. It was on then, but it REALLY was on after the opening kickoff, when we destroyed the hapless Clucker fielding the ball, made him fumble, and immediately scored. Never a contest.

That game was a powderkeg waiting to explode all day.
