Beasley vs SC 2013

I said it all game that Beasley was held a lot against SC last year. I just skimmed through the 1st quarter and took some still shots. Maybe I'm looking through orange shaded glasses. Maybe not.

First picture he has dropped back and then went in for the sack. Definitely a hold. Not sure the still does justice. Second picture he was double teamed and held. Third pick he had already shed the block and he got held from the side. I have so many shots and this was just from the 1st quarter.

I also took some stills of Brandon Thomas schooling Clowney. I almost threw up when I saw the double pass go for an interception when we were moving down the field. Hot Rod ran well and Clowney couldn't stop him. We gotta win this year.

In the 3rd pic look at how Vic is healed by #53.

You should do the FSU game.

I may do that as well. I want to finish the SC game when I get the time.

I know Corey Robinson (#53) was called for holding a few times and Vic had one or two sacks as well. Looks like they missed a couple. Vic definitely got the best of him.

All in all, I thought lack of holding calls was a real issue the entire season (at least in our games). On top of that the targeting calls were handled poorly as well. I hope they clean it up and give us a better product next season.

Holding is nothing more than a judgment call in my opinion

Apr 28, 2014, 1:58 PM

Holding could be called almost every play during the normal course of a game. I think officiating has gotten worse in college football the last few years however.

As a football official, I can tell you that holding is NOT subjective. If you go through the rulebook, you can read exactly what is allowed and what is not.

The problem is does the official want to call EVERY hold? Do they see EVERY hold? The answer to both is no

I guess the true question is --- does the hold have the potential to affect the outcome of the play?

Surely there are many technical holds that don't matter one way or the other that could be called.

But when an OL is clearly beaten off the snap and must hold to keep the play from blowing up --- which has been the case on many occasions with Vic --- it should be called. I would also jest that such instances are very obvious even at field level in most cases.

You're right, though. No one wants to be that guy blowing the whistle every play. But if that's the case, make it a 5 yard penalty and a replayed down.

There has to be something you can do to mitigate the obvious abuse of the strategy of just playing the odds and holding great pass rushers on every play. It's not especially evident in the NFL like it as at the college level, so what gives?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

They held us, but the real violation was 6 turnovers.

Apr 28, 2014, 1:30 PM

What a crap show by the offense.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Looks like Grady is the one getting held in the middle pic.***

It's a shame that they'll call a PF for looking at a WR wrong, but they'll overlook an offensive lineman (or two) absolutely mugging a DL in the name of "fairness."

The way the rules are now, it's in the OL's best interest to just hold an elite rusher on every play because they know that the reward of such a move outweighs the risk in terms of how many times it will be called throughout the game.

It's a shame.

I think the last one is a hold but depends on the angle. Also the first two in the heat of full speed play, those would be tough for me to call. We played well enough on D but if Vic learns to contain too instead of full out bull rushing then we will be fine especially against a guy like Thompson. There is not a reason in the world why we should lose this year. Home game and we are the better team. As long as we have enough OL by the end of the year. Biggest indictment on this coaching staff is that it took 5 years to get this quality OL

Here are a couple of same guy holding Barnes and Crawford. Different plays obviously. I really focused on the left side that night. Like I said, the pic doesn't do it justice. It is just a frame of an entire play. He held all night.i just tried to take stills at the right time to tell the story. Will add more later. This is from the beginning if the 2nd quarter.

On this one it was 3rd and 10. Beasley beat his man off the jump. He grabbed him the entire time after being beat and then after holding him he blocked him in the back. What did Shaw do on this play? You guessed it. He ran it for 15 yards for a 1st down and the announcers started talking about Shaw carving up the defense.

Re: Beasley vs SC 2013

Apr 28, 2014, 5:56 PM

The biggest problem I have. Is that out guys don't take advantage of the system in return. I feel like we should attempt more of the "legal holding". I also think our DL should fail like little pansy girls to attract attention to the hold. Instead they normally just try to power through a hold like a normal block. Think Basketball foul reaction type stuff.

This was a running play by SC, but still holding Beasley- unless I don't understand what constitutes holding. Dude was on Beasley like a second date all night.

On these two, Beasley shifted to the left side for a blitz. What happened? I won't even post my opinion. The two pictures are stills taken about within a second of each other. The play for SC was successful- no flag.

I agree with everyone of those. Why don't you do the same thing for #7 in garnet and you'll see that the officiating was definitely not one sided. It's getting almost to the point that if you don't take them down, it's not holding.

Here is a critical hold on Grady. Had he not been held he had Shaw dead to rights. Was 3rd and 9 and they converted. He held him all the way.

Re: Beasley vs SC 2013

That is abhorrent! You need to send those stills into the NCAA and demand an explanation. I'll bet that the Clemson defensive line and linebackers were held like that every game last season. Or, you could do both sides of the ball in every Clemson game, and realize that the contact in most of those shots are allowed by every ref, in every game, no matter the team or conference.
