In an interview during his later years, someone asked williams , if he had to face todays pitching what
would his batting average be . He replied probably about .275 . This astonished the writer and he replied, are you serious ? Williams said you realize I'm 74 years old .

since he is widely regarded as one of the best if not the best hitters in MLB history.

I'd probably put Lou Gehrig up there too along with Willie Mays, Ted Williams, and Hank Aaron.

All before minorities played and the game was easier. I didn't get one right though. I just looked it up and Rogers Hornsby hit over .400 three times. That's impressive. Ty Cobb also three times. Shoeless did it once.
