Baseball fans, what are your thoughts on the new coach?

Jun 15, 2022, 1:49 PM

What do you like and what do you dislike? I used to be a season ticket holder but haven’t followed college baseball closely the past couple of years. Just wondering what the general consensus was.

I'm ready for a change. Let's go coach. Anxious to see the new team and mechanics.

Looks like a good hire to me, time will tell. I'd be interested to see what the one parent of a committed baseball player thinks about the hire. Can't remember his name or post title but he had some really good insight.

Initial thoughts:

1. Tigernet complained for 10 years about Jack Leggett only recruiting from the Northeast and not locally, then get excited about hiring a guy from the Big 10.
2. We're paying double for a guy with a similar or weaker resume than Monte.
3. There are other coaches available with way better resumes. Cliff Godwin (ECU), Link (Notre Dame), Even Justin Haire at Campbell

I would say it's probably a good hire, but not a great one. Shocked, honestly, after all the things Neff said about being a top tier program that he would go out and get a coach that has never won a typically terrible Big 10 in 12 attempts.

Time will tell. Again, I'm no expert, but I have watched a ton of college baseball for the past 15 years.

Godwin isn’t leaving ECU, Jarrett is still playing and if he leaves, is only going to FSU

Jun 15, 2022, 2:19 PM

Bakich was by far the best coach available for the price range we were looking at. All the other names being floated out there (Sullivan, McConnell, etc.) were not realistic.

definitely disagree

Jarrett was always going to FSU, Godwin is good but I think Bakich is better, and will do more at Clemson than Cliff has done at ECU.

Bakich is highly regarded in the college baseball world.

Link Jarrett and Cliff Godwin are not coming to Clemson. So cross them off your list. Godwin wasn't going to leave and Jarrett is FSU bound or staying at ND.

Justin Haire seems like a good up and coming coach but why are we going to go down the mid-major road again when that didn't work before? Campbell's/Haire's brand of baseball is all about the home runs--literally a carbon copy of what we just saw with Monte Lee.

Bakich is a proven recruiter, a likeable guy, and he's done a great job at Michigan. Big 10 schools aren't winning 45-50 games every year. One thing he always manages to do is have Michigan playing their best ball come May/June which is something Clemson hasn't done in a decade. Good teams make Regionals, Hot teams win Championships and with Clemson's recruiting base and resources and Bakich's brand of baseball I fully expect to be back in Omaha sooner rather than later.

Great response. I tend to agree and think this is one of the best hires we could have gotten. You have to believe Neff put considerable effort into this hire considering it his is first, so I think he got the guy he wanted. Plus he has a Clemson connection already and seems to be a very business like coach, similar to Jack. Whatever happens we need to get behind him. Go Tigers!

My top guy was McDonnell but that was always going to be a long shot and then next would be Link Jarrett and from what I've heard it was basically a done deal until FSU fired Martin Jr., so you move down your list and I am very happy with Bakich.

Everyone can have their own opinion, but I think he's going to be a great coach here. I also love that he knows what Clemson was/can be, he knows the tradition, and will do a good job preserving traditions. Plus, I wouldn't be surprised if he got Leggett back involved in some way, shape, or form. Which is good for Jack's legacy since he's kind of just been the smoldering old man yelling at clouds these last few years.

A lot of misinformation here...beginning with his length of tenure at UM.

I'd rather compete for a natty than win a conference title, but that's just me.

I'm ALL IN on the hire.

Excellent Recruiter
Knows southeast
D1 coach 12 yrs experience
Learned under Corbin 6 years and helped Corbin in similar way Venables did for Dabo
Made statement once that culture was more important than wins and losses. That the right culture, the wins will follow
Solid history of developing undrafted kids for MLB.
As was Monte and as is Dabo, believes you develop the kids for after baseball.
Excellent APR - education first

Excited for fall ball and his first class.

Just hired a successful coach away from a D1 school. They were just in the CWS championship game, is that something Clemson has ever done? I’m really not sure. I believe we made the final four twice, but never the championship game. Based on what I’ve seen since 2011, this is an upgrade for sure

Let’s see how many times do we wear white hats on Sundays next season going for the sweep.
