Baseball Critique

May 5, 2022, 6:40 PM

Heres hoping for a clean sweep of Ga Tech. Go get em Tigers! This is not intended as a coach bashing but rather an objective analysis. I heard Mickey Plyler earlier this week blaming our pitching woes on youth. I respectfully disagree. With the present limitations on college baseball recruiting, youth is an issue on every team - it's the nature of the beast. Endowments do help but the vast majority of the 12 or 13 teams ahead of us in the ACC standings are not utilizing endowments. Who would have ever thought we would be struggling to overtake Duke for an ACC tourney birth? Since all teams inevitably battle the youth issue, the difference I see that separates the good teams from the not so good is player development. The good teams develop their youth. They may start slowly and even lose some early games they shouldn't. But by the middle of the year they improve, and by the end of the year are playing above average baseball. I have not seen that with Clemson baseball especially in the past few years and with pitching in particular. In fact, quite the opposite. Heres hoping for a strong finish with this years team but my concern goes deeper than this year'team.

Well, I agree and will continue to say these teams, for 3 years now, do not know fundamental baseball. They continue to make base running errors, can't or won't bunt, inability to advance runners(even with no outs), errors, and swing for the fences very pitch. Hope they can get it done.

Agreed. Something is broken and has been for a while. The strikeouts are a huge problem.

Yeah, they blamed our hitting and pitching issues on having young players last year too. These players are not being developed period. We’re into May and the coaches are all over the place on who pitches on the weekends.

We never should have fired Jack and hired a coot! Monte needs to go as soon as the season is over.

Unfortunately, Coach JL wasn’t moving them forward either. I remember seeing base running blunders( caught on base path without a clue),getting picked off first like crazy. Losing mid-week games that they seemed very capable of winning. Losing the two best assistants in the ACC to head coaching positions hurt. We didn’t recover from that. Thought Monte was a good hire. He was beating us and coots.

Lol. this is the perfect example of why people who don't actually follow baseball shouldn't develop an opinion on the coaches. Monte Lee was 2-11 against South Carolina and 1-4 against Clemson. That's a whopping 3-15 or a .167 winning percentage but to you he was a "good hire" because "he was beating us and coots." Ridiculous. Anybody that actually paid attention knew it was a terrible hire. John Pawlowski built the program at CofC. Lee, at best, treaded water. Palowski flamed out at Auburn - a program with far lower (at the time) expectations. There was no reason, beyond blind homerism, to think Lee would be a success.

You have a great point backed up by data but you go to far in saying we were blind to think Lee had a shot at success here. He had several very good seasons at CofC and one great one. I believe winning FSU regional and advancing to supers. It was far from a sure thing Lee would have success here but I think most expected the chances were pretty good we would be back in supers regularly. I know you have always disagreed with letting Jack go and you were sceptical of Monte from the jump. You were right. I hope you can agree the guy gave it his best shot and ran things in a classy manner though. Hopefully we'll all have pride in the program again soon.

Something is broken and if it is not Monte then he needs to find out what it is. SO’s are an issue, errors have progressively gotten worse. We should be getting stronger I would think as the year goes on but my expectation meter has fell back to the reality that we will occasionally put it all together but be prepared to lose 2 out of 3 to a team with a pulse. I cannot ever remember Clemson baseball being this bad. I hope they win out but the past few games offer little hope in that happening. Was really hoping Monte was going to be that guy to get us a championship but like Hatfield he won with the previous coaches players and has slowly gone downhill ever since.

I am not going to argue with most of what you are saying, but saying that youth is a problem for most of college baseball is utterly ridiculous.

There are still tons of players in the college game across the country who have exercised their covid year and are in their 5th or 6th year of college baseball.

There are also tons of teams who recruit heavily from JUCO schools which means they are playing with lineups made up of 20+ year old players as soon as they get on campus.

There are more teams beyond that who choose to go heavy in the transfer portal to replace players that have already shown what they can do at the college level.

Clemson has dipped a little into the portal and have gotten a couple of junior college players as well, so I am not trying to paint some disadvantage for Clemson.

However, you trying to say that everybody is college baseball is struggling with being young because of some kind of recruiting situation is completely false.

The bottom line is that Clemson has the players that they have recruited and they need to win more games that they are winning in conference play.
