Banks are going to ruin college football

I got auto-approved for a new credit card a couple months ago so I used it to pay for a long vacation. And when I mean vacation, I mean pulling out all the stops. I flew on an airplane, didn’t share my motel room (which almost came in handy), only ate at fast food restaurants for breakfast, and didn’t pre-game alone in my motel room with cheap drinks to keep my bar tab down. I absolutely balled.
Anyhow, now that I’m done using the credit card, I called to cancel it. They are saying I still need to pay off the balance. When did that become a thing? For real, If I could afford to pay it off, why would I be calling to cancel it in the first place?
I knew being able to afford tickets to the Georgia game was going to be a stretch, but if I can’t figure out this credit card thing I don’t know if I can even afford tickets to the ###### games like App State and Virginia. I’m sure I’m not alone on this.
Any suggestions from the bankers in here would be greatly appreciated.

You can cancel a credit card. It you have to pay the balance. Can’t spend the money and cancel it to hope the balance disappears. Stop using credit cards. Never use them if you’re going to have a balance let over.
Also, if you can, take the credit card debt, roll it into a personal loan with lower interest rate, pay off the loan early and stop buying things you can’t afford.
Signed, someone who made those same mistakes and never repeated them and worked three jobs to build considerable wealth years later.

What he said. I use credit cards for the built in consumer protection. I pay the debt off before interest accrues. I also use cards that have built in cash back. I can get as high as a 5% discount on things just by using the card. The one time I got underwater, I got a signature loan to roll them all into one payment and payed that off in 2.5 years instead of the five allotted saving more interest fees. Don’t close the accounts because your credit score will drop. Just use them like a tactician! Make your credit work for you!

After doing some research, it is starting to look like you are correct. Sure wish they would have made this clear from the start. I now understand why people don’t like banks.

Its simple, get another credit card and use it to pay off the one you want to cancel. Then see if that bank will let you cancel it. You just have to find the right bank.

That’s probably a better strategy than my plan of buying a handful of scratch offs.

You need to take out a student loan to pay off your credit card.
Be sure to take out the max amount to cover upcoming expenses you don't know about yet.

You guys are making this way too complicated... Get a graduate student loan to pay off your bank loan and then demand for your student loan to be forgiven by Joe! This way, we ALLl get to share to pay off YOUR debt...is this a great county or not?

No need to vote. Don't worry, they'll make sure your "mail-in" ballot is filled out "correctly."
And they'll cancel your debt. Win-win.

Already tried that but got denied. I’m thinking about pawning my Chad Kelly socks. It will break my heart but you’re right, YOLO.

I’m surprised you found two posters who fell into your little charade. But with that said it wouldn’t surprise me to find out your credit score is room temperature low.
