Balloon releases at football games a thing of the past?

Seems that it is more than a rumor about the helium shortage. Nebraska will only be releasing balloons once this season as of now. So, Clemson fans can probably expect the same. I have read that there will possibly be fireworks in place of the balloons? (Read it on TNet.)
Here's the Nebraska article: http://www.huskers.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=100&ATCLID=205584545

I wonder if he will blow them for us, should be use to it anyways But on a serious note I understand this and wouldn't mind seeing it only done on big games or special games like parents day, homecoming and so forth.

It's one of the most beautiful sights in college football, and it had better not go away. This is something you just do, no matter what the cost.

I honestly started thinking about it, and couldn't come up with one cost effective method that is as unique as running down the hill with the balloons rising to the skyline.

If the balloons won't go up then they should come down. They could fill them with a sulfur hexaflouride and drop them from hot-air balloons or helicopters. It would look like giant orange raindrops.

potential as CO2 does though... whether you buy into it or not, Clemson's green sect does so that gas at the very least won't happen.

They could use CO2 but they'd have to add a little weight to the balloons to get them to drop more than drift. I'm no chemist. There may be other alternatives

For helium. If I'm in fact wrong, which I highly doubt, how about a dozen or so human cannonballs being shot into the air as the players come down? We can give them parachutes or something

I remember at least one game in the early 2000s with no balloons (maybe cause of weather) and running down the hill was still super awesome.
