Bad Interviewee

I recently got promoted. I wanted my right-hand to take my former position. His interview was not as good as I’d hoped. External candidates had much better interviews, almost too good.
He’s my guy. I have to convince my boss now.
How much stock do you put into interviews?

They don't mean much.

Words are words and can be taught(for the interview), but knowledge and experience can't.

Not a whole lot. I remember a specific case. I was on a

panel that was interviewing prospective wage roll hires who had made the initial "cut". This one guy came in red eyed, looking like he had been on a two week bender. He did not do well in the interview, to my way of thinking. But, I was one of the younger ones on the panel, and the majority said to hire him.
I found out after we hired him, that he had just worked an 8 hour night shift at his current job before staying awake for his interview with us. He turned out over the years to be one of the best chemical operators we had.
Also beware: Brown Nosers are notoriously good interviewees. And usually lazy as heyall, until supervision happens to be looking.

Not nearly as much stock as I would put in observed performance if that is available.

yes to all the responses before mine. I've witnessed many 'great' interviewees that are just that.... great interviewees. Many took the place of actual folks that could DO the job. Major fail in the system that likes 'checked blocks' vice ones who can do the dang job.

You are absolutely correct 76. Look at history of interviewees. This cannot be hidden. Some people are not good at interviewing but their history will tell you who they are. Go with history and not what happens in a 1 hour interview.

If he has demonstrated to you that he can handle the job (as opposed to just being someone you really like) give him the job. I recruited for my company for awhile and got fooled by great interviews more than once.

Once I was up for a promotion. There were several candidates, but only one that I felt was a serious threat. Each person had to go before a board, demonstrate practical abilities, give answers to various questions, etc. When the senior engineer made his decision, he gave the job to the other fellow. While this guy was a pretty smart guy, and very capable, I felt hands down, I was the better choice. Anyway when the senior engineer was explaining his choice, he told me, that I had a bad interview. I couldn't believe my ears. When I asked him to explain; he lied out the ying yang. I asked him at what point did I say the things, that he said I did, his reply was, you had a bad interview and you need to accept it. Now the senior engineer was not a very likable guy, as a matter of fact, I don't know of too many friends that he had. Well I find out that he and the guy, that got the job had gotten real buddy buddy right about the time the job opening came up. I mean out drinking, bar hopping, watching the game, etc. Now, I've always liked my job, I really enjoyed what I did, but at that point I hated my job, and felt like I had rather be digging a ditch. I guess interviews are a necessity, if the people conducting them are honorable people, but I came to realize; I didn't work for very honest people.
