Tigernet would have ripped Danny Ford apart.

Dec 13, 2012, 5:32 PM

First - I'm NOT comparing the accomplishments or abilities of Danny and Dabo.

Also, for the record, I'm extremely disappointed in the fact that Dabo has lost 4 in a row to the coots, as well as his failure rate against good teams. I really, really like Dabo; I think he brings a lot of positives and has us headed in the right direction for the most part. I'm really pulling for him, but the bottom line is at some point he has to beat the coots and beat highly ranked teams. So, I don't give him a pass on that. This is not a defense of Dabo.

I fully understand that everybody is not a Dabo fan, and clearly some people just flat out don't like him or anything about him. Some of you don't like or dislike him, but just think he is not much of a football coach; Then there are those that say that, but really just hate him. Either way, that is your right.

What amazes me though, is the way every single fact, statement, comment, utterance, action, expression, or gesture is scrutinized, analyzed, and twisted every-which way to support a particular agenda or viewpoint.

There is no doubt in my mind that Tigernet would have had a persistent, vey vocal contingent that would have opposed Danny Ford throughout his time at Clemson. He would have been too country, to redneck, too conservative, too timid, too stubborn, too reckless, too shady, blah blah blah. His failure to win another national championship with all of that talent would have been inexcusable. He should have been run out of town for getting us on probation. His offense was stuck in the 60s. How could he let DOOK beat us? Why does he mumble when he talks - what an embarrasment. Oklahoma and Penn State were having down years when we beat them. We won 10 games - we would have won 11 if he had thrown the ball some! Nothing short of national championships and undefeated seasons every year would have been enough for some people.

Remember the crown on the field. It was impossible to pass but really easy to run downhill

Oh I can assure that there were many who did not

Dec 13, 2012, 5:40 PM

like Danny's style of football and some just did not like Danny himself.

I am not one of those. I hate to admit this but when I would pass him on campus, nod my head and mutter "nice game coach" , I felt like a teenage girl at a bieber concert !

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The question is if Tnet had been around

Dec 13, 2012, 5:48 PM

would the people making the decisions have been able to "railroad" Danny out of town. This place would have exploded back then !!

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Now that is a good question.

Dec 13, 2012, 6:23 PM

I never thought about that.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Back then people DID rip Danny Ford apart. I was at Clemson

Dec 13, 2012, 5:59 PM

during his tenure and can tell you there were a couple of things that frustrated Clemson fans that some were very vocal about.

For one thing we seemed to have a LOT of 3 and outs. I used to call Ford "up the middle Ford" because it seemed like we ran that play 75% of the time even when it wasn't working at all - and on 3rd and long.

We also "pulled a Clemson" more than once under Ford.

Time has made Danny Ford "perfect" but at the time there was a fair amount of criticism at times.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

On 3rd and long I would yell "Run it up the middle Danny"

Dec 13, 2012, 6:03 PM

and he would. :)

Re: Back then people DID rip Danny Ford apart. I was at Clemson

Dec 13, 2012, 6:18 PM [ in reply to Back then people DID rip Danny Ford apart. I was at Clemson ]

Danny Ford won a national title, had a winning record against usuck, and a winning record in bowls against some very good teams, namely penn st, nebraska, oklahoma, and west virginia. dabo has done none of those things. he is the first coach in about a million years to lose 4 straight to usuck, and next year will probably give them a historic fifth. he has exactly one bowl victory: the mighty powerhouse that is kentucky. he also is the proud owner of the most embarrassing bowl loss in program history. and anyone that thinks he will win a national title when he can't even win the state title is delusional.

he fields finesse teams that get smacked around by the likes of usuck. he can't seem to get his team motivated for the most important game of the year. he yammers on and on about physicality and yet is incapable of fielding a physical team. usuck is now what clemson used to be: physical and hard hitting. and we are a pass happy finesse team that gets dominated in the trenches. Danny's hat was a better coach than dabo. Nice guy coaches don't get it done. Tommy didn't; dabo won't.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Ouch, Those were different times

Dec 13, 2012, 6:21 PM

I was there too and I agree with the Danny part, just not the Dabo part

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

See - this is exactly what I'm talking about. This thread is

Dec 13, 2012, 7:54 PM [ in reply to Re: Back then people DID rip Danny Ford apart. I was at Clemson ]

not about comparing Danny to Dabo; I made that very clear in the original post. This thread is not about defending Dabo - nobody is doing that. The point of the thread is how no matter who the coach is, some people would never be happy, and will seize any opportunity to twist nothing into something in order to advance a particular agenda (dislike of Dabo in this case). And right on queue . . .

even if we did criticize him for some conservative offensive play calling. He made us appreciate a good defense and played what is called smash-mouth football.

did not. There simply was not a forum such as T-net on which to constantly bang the drum.

Re: Tigernet would have ripped Danny Ford apart.

Dec 13, 2012, 7:39 PM

I don't think so.

There's a certain portion of T-Net that wants to see a hardnosed, physical football team.

That's the group that gets chastised here.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Everybody on T-net wants to see a hardnosed, physical

Dec 13, 2012, 8:12 PM

football team. They may disagree with you as to exactly what that means and whether or not our team is physically tough and hardnosed enough, but that doesn't mean they don't want it, and that is not their disagreement with anybody.

My point is, almost everybody who was actually there agrees that Danny Ford teams were as tough and hardnosed as they come, yet there were certain people who constantly bitched about Danny Ford. Those same people, or their ilk, spend a great deal of time on Tigernet today.

partly because(and this is a repeat) 50% are just lurkers, 50% are from the enemy be it SC, Lsu or others, 50% are just sick insecure losers that are nevr happy and 10% are sincere Tigers.

Just the way the board is, and it is not alone. It is the same with most team boards.

Seems that as much as we love sports, some are never happy.
