Auburn Depth Chart by Stars according to rivals

Aug 31, 2016, 8:10 AM

Compare this to the class listing on the official release and this is a deep talented and experienced team on both lines.

This isn't going to be a cake walk folks. If they get QB play then Auburn might be competing for the SEC west. Coach Steele isn't as bad as we like to think. Remember 2010 with lots of freshman but 2009 was a great defense. He was fired for personality, chemistry and recruiting. give him somebody elses 5 stars and he's dangerous.

Gonna be hard to run on that Dline

Look at all those 5's

I think we have a pretty good push(even) or lead in other areas

Aub is littered with 4 and 5*. Talent is never an issue

The problem with them is mostly coaching and the fact that they recruit a lot of knuckleheads. Football intelligence (particularly as schemes get more complicated) has always been an overlooked characteristic in being successful on the collegiate level.

While this may be a fun exercise from an intellectual sense, these recruit star rankings ultimately don't mean anything when it comes to college performance. These star rankings are based on high school level play and are made by "services" (ESPN, Rivals, etc...) that are by no means coaching level experts. We have all seen 5 star ranked "busts" and have seen 3 star ranked players become superstars.

College coaching and player development are way more important to college performance than some opinionated recruit star rating. I don't think the Auburn game will be a cakewalk - even if they were stacked with a roster full of former 3 star "talent" recruits. Auburn is a big program that invests a lot of money in coaching and developing their players. We won't win or lose because of some high school recruit star rankings - the outcome will be determined by who executes better and avoids mistakes.

Mike Horton - 3* Rivals / 4* ESPN, 2015 Class *FR

Jeff Holland - 4* Rivals & ESPN, 2015 Class SO

Johnathan (Rudy) Ford - 3* ESPN / 4* Rivals, 2013 Class SR

Other Notes from comparing our posted Depth Chart vs theirs:
- Rivals * AVG: Clemson 3.5 OFF, 3.44 DEF / AUB 3.72 OFF, 3.84 DEF

- ESPN * AVG: Clemson 3.67 OFF, 3.56 DEF / AUB 3.79 OFF, 3.80 DEF

- Rivals * AVG Starters Only: Clemson 3.55 OFF, 3.5 DEF / AUB 3.57 OFF, 4.08 DEF

- ESPN * AVG Starters Only: 3.82 OFF, 3.75 DEF / AUB 3.57 OFF, 3.69 DEF
*Auburn has 6 starters rated 1* higher on Rivals vs ESPN

- Auburn has 16 starters either Fr, *Fr, or SO (in college only 2 years) *Per the years listed on their Depth Chart release yesterday, which appears that it may or may not be 100% reliable.

- Clemson has 16 Starters either *SO or older (in college 3 or more years)

- Auburn has 5 JUCO listed on the depth chart and 4 players that transferred from other Power 5 Schools (Texas, Ole Miss, UGA, Illinois). 3 of these 9 players are listed as starters.

What does it all mean? That we'll see on Saturday night who the better team is. I love the fact that we return 90% of our total yards on Offense from last year, 11 of our 17 1st/2nd/3rd Team All-ACC selections from last year, have the best player on the field, and go on the road with the #9 OL, #11 OL, and #3 WR units per Phil Steele (compared to #25, #21, and #50 for Auburn). I think we have the advantage out of the gate with experience across the board on offense. With these offenses, it will come down to chunk plays and turnovers.

Dabo has proven that you have to have the pieces fitting in with all other pieces or they won't work together. Dabo and our coaches do more with the blue collar recruits that accept good hard coaching and anxious to learn and be smart.
