Asking for help. Dog related. (Not Georgia Bulldogs)

May 9, 2021, 7:46 PM

My wife lost a son about six months ago. He was on the wrong path, but that doesn't stop a mother from grieving what will never be. She's having a very difficult time. We've tried everything one traditionally does to deal with grief. Time is the best healer, but right now time is standing still.

She wants a dog. We (me) have been dog-less due to the fact that we have a house full of cats...all strays that we have taken in. Apparently, our location is ideal for cat dumping. Or, maybe word got out in the cat world that we offer room and board, vet services, and treats. And, I like to keep a nice yard. I like walking/working around without dodging "bullets".

For over a month I have been trying to find a dog/puppy. She wants a small non-shedding type...female...a Maltipoo, a miniature poodle, a Cavipoo, etc. CraigsList scammers have taken over that forum. Cute puppy dogs are ways to get emails, phone numbers, etc. I know because I never hear back from the "sellers" but I am inundated with spam calls and messages. Or, a legit animal gets gone quick. I do see some listed for $2500-4,000. We just can't put that in a dog considering the vet services that will be needed as well.

Does anyone have a contact that is "real" and can help me find a puppy or rehome an adult without breaking the bank? I sure would appreciate a push in the right direction.

A Shih-Tzu would be a great choice...

Awesome dogs that don't shed. Playful, very social and affectionate, mild mannered, very intelligent, and a Shih-Tzu puppy won't break the bank. The biggest drawback is their hair can get long and matted so you will have to keep them groomed.

We had a half mini pomeranian and half Yorkie. She lived a long time and although fluffy she never shed. Good dog if you can find something similar.

I'll say this, and you can take it how you want, and I will suggest you read what ever you can read about them, but, I have own many different breeds of dog's,hands down the Rottweiler is absolutely the best, smartest, most loving, most loyal animal I've had in my 69 years of life. They are also the very easiest animal I've had to train. They want to please their master's, period. At lead up about them!!!

First of all I’m so sorry for what you and your wife are going through. When we wanted a dog for our son, we contacted our local Humane society. They paired us with a beautiful one year old black lab. Spayed, gave all her shots and bathed and groomed her free of charge. She met us at the door with a good girl bandanna tied around her neck and it was love at first sight. She was loving and gentle, loyal and very calm. Trained easily and was obedient right away. Hoping you will find just the right one to help your wife through the long grieving process.

Dachshund. Perfect dog and they live a long time. That dog will cuddle up under blankets and watch tv, but are still really brave and are good for outdoors and care rides. They are easy to clean up after and take on trips too. Just get medical insurance. Maybe 15 bucks per month.

I agree with Dachshunds. We started with 2 half brother puppies then rescued 4 more so we had 6 at one time. 4 have passed away due to old age so we only have 2 now. The rescues seem more appreciative of attention than the original puppies who expected it.

You can always check Gvl Humane Society

Nov 5, 2021, 11:50 AM

and other similar places. Sometimes you can get lucky and get a pure bred, but mostly it's mutts. But you can get a great dog at a really good price there.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We have labs. Labs are very committed to their owner.

Nov 5, 2021, 12:01 PM

Labs also have a great history as service dogs. Labs typically live 10-13 years.

You may not get what you are looking for, but if you don't want to break the bank - SPCA is the way to go. You can find a dog that gets along with cats, a playful puppy, a settled down older dog or a just lazy old dog. Some the best dogs I have had came from the pound.

breeder recommended by my Mom's friend who is a dog groomer. The poodle is a female and has been spayed. She is the best thing that has happened to them lately. They got her in December 2019 and has been a godsend especially during the COVID lockdown. The dog is healthy, playful, loyal, and very intelligent.

My parents are in the Greenwood area. I should be able to get the contact information and will try to TMail you.

Unfortunately, the only dogs that seem to be

Nov 5, 2021, 12:13 PM

available at the shelters are Pitt Bulls and Pitt mixes. Those that are there may seem sweet, but they are there for a reason.

I don't have anything that would be helpful except that some breeders will sell non- conformers for a discount.

Not sure what shelter you usually frequent, but the Greenville Humane Society has all types of mixes and breeds. We adopted our retriever/dachshund mix there a few years ago. I've seen all sorts of mixes and breeds there. My daughter has volunteered there and said the same thing.

I raise labs, and we will have puppies at Christmas, and we have one black female left that was born in April. She is a smaller lab. She was the runt of the liter. If you would be interested in her we could make you a deal. They were selling for 2500 but I can let her go for 1000. She is very nice and loving, and she loves to snuggle. Check us out at diamond hill retrievers on the internet, or facebook. You can also got to puppy find.com to look for smaller dogs as well. You can message us through Facebook if interested in the lab and we can send pics.

We had a malti-pooh for almost 14 years and loved it. (Still not over it ) unfortunately it went over the rainbow a year and a half ago. Just started looking to get another one and found out that they're 6-7 thousand dollars around here. I about hit the floor and sad we won't be getting another one..it's ridiculous what people try to charge for dogs that could have a good home..anyway good luck

Miniature schnauzers get along great with cats and do not shed much. Ours is almost 15 years old. Labs are great, too.

Re: Asking for help. Dog related. (Not Georgia Bulldogs)

Nov 5, 2021, 1:21 PM

I am so very sorry for your wife's loss, so tragic.

My wife and I are volunteers with a rescue group, Stepping Stones Canine Fosters WV. I have seen the good side of rescue and the seedy side. Not all rescues are created equal, most are good, but some are not. So be sure to check what former adopters say about them. I suggest a foster based group, where the dog / puppy lives with a family.

With foster based, the dogs are exposed to a family life style. The foster can observe how they are with other dogs, children and cats, etc. I also suggest asking how long the dog has been in care, we generally hold for at least 2 weeks. Any illness they came in with should have presented within the 1st 2 weeks. Also a rescue group that doesn't want you to fill out an application should be a red flag.

With cats, puppies who grow up with cats do very well. With adults it has been our experience cats soon put dogs in their place. The exception is dogs with a strong prey drive, for example many terrier breeds. Not that all individual dogs of a certain breed will have a strong prey drive, but as a rule most will. Our Aussie was a perfect dog in so many ways, but with cats he could not help himself from wanting to chase them out of the yard like he was shot out of a cannon.

Someone else mentioned petfinder.com, I'll add adoptapet.com. You will need to be patient and check on a regular basis. Like most rescue groups, we have no idea what dogs/puppies we will have until they show up, and desirable dogs go rather quickly. We place most of our dogs in WV and our surrounding states, but we have placed as far away as Canada, Chicago, CT, FL and states in-between, and adopters come to us.

TL/DNR Do your homework and good luck.

How fantastic !

We've had a few blind pups and they do amazingly well. They've mostly been placed in homes with an adult dog, and the older 'sibling' is soon helping them get around in their new home.

We've placed deaf pups with deaf children, and pups with a malformed limb with different abled kids. The pups have no idea they are any different from their litter mates.

Bless y'all.

My blue heeler is the best dog I have ever owned. Loyal, smart, and very easy to housebreak/crate train. They are also not high energy unless you train them to be. Check out Willow Creek Farmery on facebook for further information. They are pure bred, and my male only cost me 280 last December. Females are a little over 300. Nice people, and even better dogs.

Call me I’ll send you a private pm, 336-338-9251, I have a a Borderdoodle left that was spoken for, the owner took him home for 3 days but he had an 7 year male dog who was getting jealous & trying to attack the puppy so we took him back to avoid him being hurt.
He’s a beautiful dog 13 weeks old. We have not marketed him after he came back because we had 3 big horse show & National Championships this week. He’s not going to be small but he would be perfect natured for her, he’s smart but laid back, he thinks before he acts for a puppy.
This might end up being the perfect home for him & perfect companion too.

Sorry for all you are going through. I had, until recently, only had rescues. When our last dog passed less than a year ago my wife insisted she wanted a non-shedding, hypoallergenic, small house dog. She settled on a maltipoo. Not something I would have picked in a million years but she has been a wonderful addition to our family. We used https://premierpups.com/
. The price was a little steep but it covers pretty much everything but the spay/neuter. The company does a great job.
