Asking for a serious, unbiased, analysis of Coots recruiting

Dec 20, 2017, 6:21 PM

I know they are in mourning after seeing what we did today. I know we definitely wanted Joyner, but give Dabo credit for being up front with him and telling him he will not play qb at Clemson but he was an excellent DB recruit. It’s interesting that he said after the Shrine Bowl that he would play whatever position they wanted him to.

$CU will eventually move him to DB IMO

By all accounts, he a solid player and a great kid but he is not a legitimate Division 1 QB.

Usuc doesn't have any other QBs

Nothing against the kid, but he must have seen his film from that game. He may be able to contribute but he needs a few years to get there. If the Coots had anyone else in the mix I would say he was for sure going to a different position.

Otherwise I would say it was an okay class, a couple of good pickups scattered amongst the bodies. They haven't done enough to close the gap within their division much less with us.

I think they have a very solid class. Bryce Thompson is a steal (really liked him at the Shrine Bowl) and they have some other nice pieces, including the LB that flipped from FSU and the OL Jovaughn Gwyn. Their problem is they are chasing Georgia and Clemson, and give Mullen and Pruitt time at Fla and Tennessee and they will be chasing those guys.

Thank you mr Hood. Started typing about the same thing. We can laugh but being honest we would have been elated with their class in 2006 etc.

Good gosh it’s unbelievable to be a Tiger these days. Thank you for having the vision CDS and all the rest. I thank the Good Lord everyday for giving me one more to enjoy this ride!

WE wouldn't have had a class that looks good on paper, with

as many as 5 of em headed to JC. Typical Uuc recruiting Top 20 on NSD, lose 5 before August, lose another 4-5 before they are on campus their second year.

Thats why they wind up taking 20 - 25 players every year.

In all seriousness they're improving where they need to improve in recruiting, it's not a massive jump but it is what people were expecting. They dipped into Florida a bit and pulled some recruits and they're improving on the defensive side. Rick Sandige if that's how you spell it will probably end up a coot and he is very disruptive in the interior as seen in the shrine bowl. I expect them to improve but honestly, going up is all they can do at this point.

Their class is pretty decent I would say. Problem is they will probably have a few go to juco or prep school and he may cycle some more kids out to make room for more. This will always keep you “young” from a roster standpoint and if you are not signing consistent quality, it is a recipe for mediocrity.

They're actually doing pretty well - a lot better in actuality than they were doing Spurrier's last three years, when The Visor and staff pretty much mailed it in. Clemson is grabbing the top couple players out of the state...and leaving a lot of players we would have been happy to grab even a couple years ago. Jaycee Horn looks like a pretty good CB, and I really like two of the OL they signed, Jovaughn Gwyn (was hoping we'd steal him but didn't have room) and I think Hank Manos will start at center for 2-3 years for them. Bryce Thompson was probably the second-best athlete on the field at the Shrine Bowl (behind Derion Kendrick)...he has hands of stone as a WR, but the dude can motor.

They're not getting the top guys, but Muschamp works his fanny off - he does put in the miles, I'll give him that - and he signs a bunch of decent guys.

On the other hand, he and his staff rate pretty much zero as developmental coaches too. They brought in something like 34 new faces through various means (new recruits, transfers, walk-ons) last year, which tells you they turned over literally a third of even their 105-man extended roster. It tells you he's running off players at a wondrous rate...and I think a big part of that is the fact that he just won't play them. He basically played less than 30 guys against us (both years, in fact), excepting a few snaps on ST's, and if you let the vast bulk of your guys just rot on the bench, how are they supposed to get better?

Whatever, turnover's always been a huge problem for the Champ at every stop he's been, and next year's exodus has already started. And they're already up to 23 commits even after way oversigning last year.

Yep ....quo pretty much nailed it. Of course the big problem is that they are always toward the middle of the pack in their conference in recruiting and lack of playing time and coaching dooms them for middle of the pack during the season. Muschamp, at least to this date, plays a very conservative, unimaginative offense, and I can't imagine that it is that much fun to play in. I think he is a lot like other defensive guys that become head coaches. It almost doesn't matter who their OC is. This year was an anomaly, as there were just so many bad teams in the SEC East.
