As an outside observor listening to Elliott...

Sep 19, 2021, 7:11 AM

.... in his post game presser.

"They gave us a look with 3 down linemen and dropping 8 into coverage."

Then he talks about an 8 play drive followed with a 12 play drive for a TD early in the game.

So, my question is, "Your running stats were only 41/158 with a 3.9 yard average. Why couldn't you run it more effectively?"

Great point…..same thing I was thinking….

So I guess our OL must really suck if we cannot run against a three man front and 8 in coverage.

You my friend are exactly right. We should have been licking our chops when they came out in that. I distinctly remember a game where we ran for 400+ yards because the defense was determined to take away our deep passes.

I posted yesterday about the play when Lyn J got tossed for a 5 yard loss on an rpo. The defense crashed down and DJ didn't read it. That happened at least twice. Had he pulled it, he may still be running. Seriously, we're talking GA tech. A slight upgrade from SC State.

I'm not at practice, not sure what, if anything they work on. Nor do I know if it's a locker room issue, field leadership issue or what. What I do know is the players on offense are definitely NOT on the same page. It's like DJ and the oline are running 2 different plays.

Ngata over the middle wide open and the balls 10 yards from him. He turned around and his expression was like w t h??? Another, Ross had to dive to the ground to make a special play. DJ leads him it's probably a TD. Obviously TE and Dabo know for whatever the reason, DJ is just not as advertised for reasons non of us probably know.

Those 8 were all within 8 yards of the line

Sep 19, 2021, 8:01 AM

of scrimmage. Tech took away the deep ball and jammed up the area in front of that 8 yards.

Running game was better in 2nd half when DJ started running. I expect more of that. DJ still doesnt execute the zone read well however. Several times he gave instead of keeping, when keep would have produced good yardage.

Still plenty of questions to be answered. But as this offense hopefully grows, I'd say it's probably going to look a lot different from the big play machine we're used to

Thanks striperfan, you posted last night in a thread that was spot on. I'd love to hear a good discussion concerning our offense. I wholeheartedly admit I don't have the knowledge of schemes. Just baffled at what's going on. Sure, personnel changed from last year - ETN and Amari, Carmen/Cade Stewart from OL (Powell was a beast but imo we have better this year) is that really enough for DJ to go night and day from last year?

For one reason, the guy that went in and helped them go

Sep 19, 2021, 8:38 AM

right down the field before the untimely fumble, immediately went right back out. The next series was terrible, and then the craziness kind of exploded...

I have never seen so many close calls and bounces go the other teams way...Well, actually I have, and almost every time it has been against Georgia Tech. I have said many times, the guy in the review booth has WAY TOO MUCH POWER. Yesterday was further proof. We constantly had plays reviewed at his discretion, while similar situations by GT were not. At least they were not until we forced the issue. Compare the two targeting calls that were charged on us, to how long it took to get the one against Davis looked at.

And the review of the spot on Shipley's run, right before the fumble by DJ, reminded me of the year the ref at Michigan told Spurrier that the Gamecocks were short. I bet when Dabo sees that one he goes off!

Anyway, we have a lot of work to do before next Saturday. A LOT OF WORK

Ha, this is true, I’ve seen way too many close games with Georgia Tech decided by the refs over the years. Not sure what that’s all about, I don’t see this with other teams. I actually feel like NC State for one has gotten hosed against us a few times by the refs over the years.

I remember another GT when they were 2 scores down with 4 or 5 minutes to play. I think it was in the '90's I think and the only detail I remember is a complete breakdown on a punt attempt. I'm old enough to remember when GT refused to play us in Clemson. I have a long standing and deep hatred for the bugs.

My first thought as well. Accidentally clicked TD but big time thumbs up.

Every year we seem to have an ugly game. This year we already have had 2 and a cupcake game. Coaches saying they played a defense structure we weren't expecting. Ain't no way that defense was better than those Bama defenses that we would put 40 points on. We are letting defenses dictate our offense, instead of offense dictating defenses. That's a sign there is confidence on offense by the coaches. And I agree, if you cant run against 3 man GT front, then something is wrong. Gotta hope the defense can keep winning the ugly games for us this year.

GT showed a pass defense, whether 7 or 8 beyond the line, but more than half the times they started with that alignment, the box was loaded against the run at the snap.
