Was Hopkins that much better than Watkins?
Aug 7, 2013, 1:22 PM

After a two game suspension Watkins recorded stats in 9 games. I know he played in 10 but was lost early vs. Lsu to injury. What i want to highlight is sans two ball games Sammy's stats were.....well, pedestrian.
Against Boston College: 8 catches, 202 yards, 1 TD Against NC ST: 11 catches, 110 yards, 1 TD
7 remaining games: 38 catches, 396 yards, 1 TD
So, in 7 games he averaged 5.4 catches, 56.6 yards and .14 TDs.
I know Hopkins was the best WR for Clemson in 2012, but I honestly didn't know it was by that wide of a margin. Did Watkins play hurt last season?

Swann held Bama's cooper to 8/128 and one score......seems about right for Watkins as well. If we can hold Sammy to a single td i'm confident we can win.

After all the grief you tigers have given Murray.......it looks like Sammy just fails to show up in big games....at least in 2012. Anyone care to provide some stats to prove otherwise?

No one here will suggest he had a great year last year.
But we also have seen him do it in 2011, and know the reasons he underperformed to that level in 2012.
I also laugh at your suggestion that folks here don't think Murray is a dang good QB. He is. But it is inarguable that so far he hasn't performed as well in big games (though, to be honest, in big games that is usually harder, and so MOST very good players don't get the stats in the hardest games). Its common sense.

"If we can hold Sammy to a single td i'm confident we can win."
Yyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyikes.
In all seriousness, with the amount of inexperience that Georgia has on defense and the number of injuries they have that are limiting practice time, I would imagine a Boyd-and-Watkins combo on the road is the absolute last thing I'd want to face to open the season. None the less, I'm not how you assume that holding Watkins to one TD gives Georgia the W.
Hopefully our crowd will help our defense with some ear-splitting noise to disrupt the Dawg offense.

have to work all that hard. I mean the UGA defense showed little to no interest in tackling the Bama running backs in what I saw of the game.

1. Sammy is better than cooper 2. Boyd is better than McCarron 3. 8/128 and 1 TD is not good on Defense if a player has those numbers for 13 games it comes out to be a 1664 yard 13 TD season

Yes, Sammy had some health issues that set him back last season. Also, it's easy to torture statistics to show what you want them to. Pulling out a receiver's most productive games and averaging out the remaining stats is perhaps the most simplistic way to do that.
Another thing to consider is that Tajh and Nuk developed some great chemistry and he showed that he could come through in the clutch. Therefore, he got more balls thrown his way. Sammy couldn't do that at least in part because he wasn't in a lot of those games.
That said, I don't have any concerns about Sammy's dedication and potential for this season.

I think it had more to do with Watkins never really getting things going with the offense last season. Out for first two games which allowed Boyd to find Hopkins as his go to target. Out another game sick, strangely enough it was Boston College he was out. Also played against FSU still recovering from his illness. I would suggest checking out his freshman season.

Played sick during FSU and didn't think he played at all at BC, but maybe he did. Hard to ramp up and, knowing what we had at that point time, hard to not let Nuk shine. With the sets we use, you can't reward every receiver every game.
Look at it this way too. Sammy was far and away better than Nuk Sammy's freshman year (Freshman AA, and all that). Sammy's stats last year were clearly lacking, and everyone knew it. Nuk stepped into the role we needed.

Watkins is probably more talented than Hopkins

but because he missed so much time at the beginning of the year, and because he was injured for a couple of games, he never quite got into a groove.
If you break things down, once Sammy was on the field and had played in a few games, he actually was very good. VT was his second game back from injury, and only the 4th game he played in all year. However, these are his stats from then on:
VT- 84 yds Wake- 202 yds Duke- 97 yds Maryland- 60 yds NC St.- 110 yds SC- 37 yds LSU- Injured on first couple plays, so I'm not counting this one
That's an average of 98.3 yds/ game, which translates to about 1300 yards had he played the whole season healthy. Could've been a pretty good year, had he been ready to go when he was supposed to.
However, you should also look at his other stats, since Clemson uses Watkins all over the field.

And he's also forgetting a very simple fact. Last year Nuk was on fire and he was getting open enough for Tajh to get him the ball. You go to the hot receiver when you can.
Also, when on the field if ap lay is designed correctly, then Sammy may well have contributed much more than stats show. If he ran his route correctly then it often forced a Safety to decide between two receivers. Then someone else is open because Sammy took a safety with him.

Nuk was the consummate team player. Sammy wasn't being a team player when he got busted. I will rate Nuk better than Sammy only because of that.

Watkins out performed 14 of 15 UGA players that recorded at least on reception last year.
your defense is about to get lit up, and don't worry about sammy...we've got 12 other guys who are equally capable of making life difficult for your defense on 8/31.

It is about time. Basically Sammy is the NCAA equivalent of the moon landing. Everyone with half a brain knows that the moon landing was fake, the US government blew up/organized 9-11 to keep Halliburton investors happy, and that Sammy is no better than an average 2nd stringer at an FCS school.
But why has the media bought into the Sami hype? That is something you will have to ask the master of sports media .... yes, I speak of Mickey Mouse. Follow the crumbs and cheese to Disney. Yes, ESPN is taking orders from The Mouse. The mouse has plans for Sammy. I don't know the specifics, but they have plans for this slow receiver with horrible hands. But the story is out there somewhere.
UGA can put a linebacker on Sammy and you'll be fine. No worries.
Oh yeah and Nuk sucks too
