Are we required to play a SoCon team every year?

Jan 12, 2022, 10:15 AM

Seems like I heard this a while back, and that it may even be some legislative thing? Anyone have clarification on that?

I see where we're playing Furman next season. Also playing La Tech early on. I wish we would schedule some better non-conference games, but what do I know....

We should play Vanderbilt ... an SEC win carries a lot of

weight ... well, except for the coots.

We have to find 4 non-conference games a year? Where can our AD find them if not close to home?

No, but we try to schedule an in-state school every year.

We also have an sec team and Notre Dame next year.

Look at non-conference schedules for Bama, etc and get back to us.

The game has to meet several criteria: 1) a sure win, 2) home game revenue, and 3) a local opponent smooths the preparation for Clemson's administration and lowers the payday to the visiting team.

Does this include South Carolina?

Maybe it's not a formal requirement, but I think we do

play a SoCon team every year, if nothing else, as an homage or whatever to our days playing in that conference before we split to the ACC. I can get that. A good way to support our former conference and their teams.

you by being more aggressive at scheduling than others.

Georgia 2021 played UAB and Charleston Southern. Kudos to them, they also played Clemson and Georgia Tech

Georgia 2022 plays Samford and Kent St

Alabama 2021 played Mercer, Southern Miss, and New Mexico St

Alabama 2022 plays Utah State, UL Monroe, and Austin Peay

So when you say this you are essentially asking that our schedule for OOC be harder than anyone else. Yes it's more fun for us, but if it came with being the reason you were left out of the playoffs it would suck.

Alabama benefits in a way from their in state rival being same division and conference in that it opens up another crappy team they can play where we are stuck playing that Women's Basketball Team from the ######## that is Columbia. And Georgia likewise is stuck playing Georgia Tech which I know historically has been a rival but lately has been more laughable than us playing the Coots.

You also wouldn't get 7 home games a year because the larger schools will expect home and away.

If they are, I wish they'd play my alma mater, Western Carolina.

I believe it's not a requirement. However we do it to support the small schools in SC, not small schools in other states. These smaller programs MUST have these pay-day games to survive. It's the right thing to do.

Even the coots play a small SC school once a year. They don't always win, but they try.

P.S. Notice the very few times 'bammer plays a good out of conference game, it's either a home game or neutral field. Under Saban they will never play a good team on the road except as dictated by the conference.

Bama has changed stance on this. They have upcoming home-and-homes with Texas, Wisconsin, West Virginia, and Oklahoma State.

Not me. I like having those cupcakes for practice for the tougher games.

Forgot to add there is more chances for more of our players to play. I wouldn't change a thing.

Yes...Clemson plays uof7c every year

Jan 12, 2022, 2:27 PM

The Capons are a lot more like a SoCon team than an $EC team.
