I was discussing the recently proposed legislation in California and South Carolina last night with my neighbor. I am curious to hear some other thought/opinions regarding this. Could schools have deals in place with boosters during the recruitment of an athlete (the word student omitted)? The example would be a car dealership proposes to pay 5* prospect $ 100,000 annually for billboards, radio spots, commercials,personal appearances, etc........? I have not seen where any capped amounts have been referenced and this could open up some serious revenue streams for the elite of the elite prospects. The compensation for "likeness" would seemingly only benefit the cream of the crop players and not the bulk of a roster. Thoughts?

Not sure how it would work but I assume there would be rules against paying recruits. At the end of the day the proposed legislation is to let the free market determine how much a college athlete is worth, not the NCAA. If a dealership wants to pay a 17 year old recruit $100k a year that's fine, we will see where their bid is after a recruit turns into a bust (Willy Korn comes to mind). I would bet they wouldn't be willing to shell out that cash for the next recruit after they get burned and would focus on more proven athletes (lawrence, ETN, etc).
If you're talking about a school funneling money through a dealership then that is a completely different question and unrelated to the proposed legislation.

Some are, some aren't. I'd argue that the players in the upper crust are not nearly compensated enough while the players on the lower crust are probably over compensated. How much money does Trevor make this program?

These students are here to get an education. I don't care how much the university makes..I don't care about the nfl or nba or any other professional league.
If it's unfair, don't go to school...go make money off your image some where else.

You are not being honest with yourself if you think these students choose clemson to get an education. Harvard Yale Princeton UNC Duke etc would be a lot better at football if that was actually the case.
Of course, there are plenty of students that use football as a means to an education as they have no hope of NFL.
We're not talking about those people though. We're talking about the 5 star blue chip prospects who would be compensated and all of them have the goal of reaching the NFL. College football is a stepping stone.
Ask yourself - if the NFL had a farm league that paid a guaranteed salary of $200k, would those 5 star prospects risk going to college?

If you pay players fair market compensation for their image, this is the pandora's box it opens. There would be nothing illegal about boosters using incoming players as sponsors and paying them whatever they want. The only reason it doesn't happen now is because you forfeit your amateur status and you have to have that per NCAA rules. If we go free market you can compensate anyone any amount to use their likeness for promotion and the NCAA would lose the ability to regulate this.
Unfortunately the NCAA, conferences and individual schools have brought this to a head by failing to acknowledge the amount of money made on college football players and basketball players. The other issue the NCAA has is title IX. Even if they could have developed a fair compensation plan it would have to be equally distributed to all NCAA athletes regardless of what the sport or school was involved. So Trevor Lawrence would get the same as players on the softball team at College of Charleston. That would have maybe delayed the inevitable but doesn't solve the problem of the NCAA capping players market value.
Unfortunately we are on the doorstep of college athletics becoming a true semi-pro league. Most of the power 5 will have the donors to make the necessary payments. You can argue many are already doing this so maybe it's not a big deal after all. All the other schools will fade back into more of the true student-athlete model much like the FCS schools.
I'm not sure what can be done about it, but with billions of dollars of revenue involved, there's no stopping this at an NCAA stipend and there's no real way to legislate the free market for the athletes of the revenue generating sports.

For athletes. Make it about students.. students try out for sports.
Coaches are paid the same as professors.
