Swinney on confidence in Uiagalelei, Phommachanh not playing

Nov 1, 2021, 9:06 PM

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney was asked on his call-in show Monday about why Taisun Phommachanh hasn't seen more action lately and if it was because of Phommachanh's look (in practice or games) or just confidence in DJ Uiagalelei:

"Definitely confidence in DJ is still there. That particular game (at Pitt), we knew that where the game was (in the fourth quarter) that we were going to have to throw the ball -- a couple scores down there. DJ gives us the best chance there. That's what we feel. He went out and played good this past week. I thought he did a lot of good things and really played well. And needed and had to play well and did. Again, we moved the ball really effectively the entire game. Like I said, missed on some kicks -- made some great plays. We made some of the plays that we haven't been making. Some of the routine-type plays that we need to make around here. I've got all the confidence in Taisun too. Hopefully he's going to get some more opportunities as we go through the end of the season here."

I thought DJ had one of his worst games Saturday, and that’s saying something. If the int in the middle of the 3rd doesn’t get him benched, then it’s obvious he can’t do much to get himself benched.

Just being honest , having attended 4 games this year and watching the rest on tv, I’m not sure we’ve had a guy at that position with less field awareness in my time of watching the tigers. I keep trying to see a bright light at the end of the tunnel with DJ, but I just can’t find it

Time for change at QB. For better or worse. Help is on the way. Go Tigers!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Not gonna happen. DJ gives us the best chance to win.

Nov 1, 2021, 9:58 PM

Coaches are there for every play of every practice and chart every single play. They know who gives us the best chance to win.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Apparently that's irrelevant, given

Nov 1, 2021, 10:01 PM

our own coaches saying that DJ plays great in practice and they're not sure why it doesn't translate to game day.

Re: Apparently that's irrelevant, given

Nov 2, 2021, 12:06 AM

It's 1000% bc nobody is taking shots at him, bruising his body, or messing up his hair in practice. In actual games, he is fair game for who ever on the opposing defense to put him on the ground with as big a hit as they can get away with!!!!!

Re: Apparently that's irrelevant, given

Nov 2, 2021, 5:52 AM

Lol. Can you name one play from this year where he got blown up?

Your wrong, he plays better when he's running power and seeking out contact. It's the pass rush and pocket collapsing that makes him melt down.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Apparently that's irrelevant, given

Nov 2, 2021, 1:22 PM

He seems like he is trying to avoid contact, not seek it out. Maybe he is protecting his NIL.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don’t think that’s how you protect your NIL.***

I’d be hesitant stepping up into the box because right now it’s an imaginary one. When the young line gets it together, we get over the dropsies (Sat was an improvement), the coaches get over poor play calling (because of the above mentioned problems), and the bad breaks level off to normal D.J. will shine.

Well you’d be incorrect

Going off the mistakes made, not stats, and what I visually seen as far as managing his position. Again, my opinion, not really seeking your validation

Re: Well you’d be incorrect

Nov 1, 2021, 10:20 PM

So true.

I do feel like 8 games is a pretty good barometer, and make no mistake, the O-line is equally bad . I would say ,if there is a QB on the roster who doesn’t consistently turn the ball, we’d probably be a more successful offense. I have no insight if TP is that guy, but I’d sure find out. Because at this point, we know what we wil get out of DJ.

Good you are not seeking validation… your opinion is just flat wrong!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It was his best P5 game of the year.

Nov 1, 2021, 9:57 PM [ in reply to Re: Swinney on confidence in Uiagalelei, Phommachanh not playing ]

He ended up with a 61% completion rate but was at 67% at halftime.

We had 248 yards of our total 377 yards at halftime. We had a good half for sure.

Didn't do as well in the 2nd half, but overall it was DJ's best P5 rating (116.7) of the season.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Just not true. QBR is the measure. Not RTG.

Nov 2, 2021, 7:13 AM

I just have to think DJ is incredibly fragile mentally for Dabo to come out and try to tell us that he played great. He didn’t.

I’ve asked myself- why is Dabo sunshine pumping to the point of lying about this?

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'm sorry but a rating is a rating.

Nov 2, 2021, 1:14 PM

And it was the highest of the year.

I do believe DJ may be a bit mentally fragile, but let's let Dabo coach the way he's coaches for 12 years. We're 2nd im wins since then, and we have the 2nd best CFP accomplishments as well. Let's not worry so much about how Dabo handles things.

I agree, and as much as we didn't care for Nick Schuessler, or Cole Stoudt as our QB, but with the upgrade in talent since those two guys were Tigers, I would much rather have either of those guys behind center right now than DJ, and especially Cole Stout!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dabo scared of Bog Dave.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

DJ is the new Kyle Parker.

Nov 1, 2021, 10:00 PM

Kyle scared for his life out there playing with a cracked rib after the Auburn game, and Dabo wouldn't dream of giving Tajh a shot because he'd personally guaranteed that Kyle was NFL talent.

No offense of course. You have opinions, and that's cool. They're just kind of asinine.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Makes sense....you work for the AD.

There's no other option. You fluff the coaches like it's your job, so I'm left with not other conclusion.

Which part of what he said was inaccurate?

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Well, for one DJ and Parker are nowhere near the same

Nov 2, 2021, 1:26 PM

situation, and two, I said asinine, not inaccurate. Like I said, Obed has opinions and that's cool, but he tends to express them in an asinine manner. He's one of those long-term fans who acts like a spoiled new-school fan. He was happy as a pig in slop when things were going well, but when faced with adversity the true man comes out. That's all I'm saying. I'm sure he's an okay dude, but I wouldn't want to go into a battle with him on my team.

Re: DJ is the new Kyle Parker.

Nov 1, 2021, 10:13 PM [ in reply to DJ is the new Kyle Parker. ]

Interesting comparison. But that was one play or one series with an injured Kyle. This is an ENTIRE season with DJ - and he is not injured.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Agree on him not being injured, but Kyle actually did play

Nov 1, 2021, 10:25 PM

a majority of the rest of that season despite clearly not being the same player after the Nick Fairley hit.

If he was the litigious type, he probably had grounds for a suit against the University.....our medical staff cleared him to play and he head crack ribs that were only discovered when he went through the NFL combine.

After 7 games our starting QB has a QBR in the 40s.
Yet Dabo has all the confidence in the world in him ?
BS !!!!!!!!!!

Re: Swinney on confidence in Uiagalelei, Phommachanh not playing

Nov 2, 2021, 2:30 AM

Just once, I wish a coach could be honest:
"Confidence, what's that"? "Even with the pick six against Georgia, I had confidence in him".
"I even had confidence when he took the handoff from the shot-gun in our own end zone against Tech. Of course it was a bone-headed call by my "brilliantly stupid" OC.( Dabo referred to T.E. that week as "brilliant") but we got away with it".
"And then we failed to "score more points" against N.C. State but I don't think our OC told him we need to do that".
"But all in all it's not entirely DJ's fault we are sitting at 4-3 right now. After all it's not his fault "We are who we are right now". He can't help if he didn't know the game plan the other teams were using against us ,or that he alone is to blame for "the crowd noise being a distraction".
"And the Pitt game was the pits ,handing the ball to a guy in the others team's jersey for a pick 6.That hadn't happened all season"
( Reporter asking)"But you said you had confidence even after the pick 6 by UGA in the opener"?
"I did? Next question please".

Hello Brandon (not to be confused in any way to "Let's Go Brandon" ...

Your fine post brought out the angry amped up group that seems too emotional to analyze what they say more carefully.

There is an excellent subsequent post StripSack Play Sequence in TNet that provides an excellent educational lesson to the "emotional" posters. I sure hope that most of the posters on this string take the time to read that post; it will teach then a LOT about football in general, and about QB play in particular.

Sure hope TP gets plenty of series. IF (IF) DJ5 hits the portal, then we will need TP for continuity, maybe even some starting time.
