Apologies in advance since I don't normally do this....

Mar 1, 2015, 2:09 AM

But I have to state my own case about the lack of student support for the basketball team in response to bccrownover's thread posted earlier.....http://www.tigernet.com/forums/message.jspa?messageID=16933949 (Intending no disrespect to you personally, just using your reasons to make my argument)

Basically, he defends the students for not showing up because:

1. Our team's brand/style of play isn't very exciting

2. We were playing a sub .500 team that beat us earlier this year

3. We aren't nationally relevant

and

4. We have a tendency to lose or (gasp) almost lose about half of our games

I'm sorry, but is anybody other than me sick and tired of these pathetic excuses by the students for not going to the games? Their arguments simply don't hold any water.

Our team isn't exciting to watch? Get over it! Clemson is Clemson, and should be supported regardless of who is coaching, what style of ball we play, or what our record is.

We are playing a "crappy" ACC team? Sweet! All the more reason to go so we can witness a conference win. That crappy ACC team fought back and made the game exciting? And we actually had to go to OT to beat them? Awesome! Way to go Tigers, for overcoming adversity and not folding when that could have very well happened.

We aren't relevant? So you are basically advocating fair-weather fandom?

We aren't blowing people out every game/losing several of our games? Newsflash: This is college basketball. Anybody can beat anybody n any given night. That's just the nature of the sport. This ain't football.

I was in school for some mediocre Brownell teams as well, but you better believe I was at every single home game unless I was home over winter break. I'd give my left nut to be back in school and have the ability to go to all the games again. I'm lucky to make it up for more than one football game a year. Basketball games are almost out of the question. I don't care if we were winless in the ACC, I'd be there for every game and the majority of students should be too. I had my heart ripped out time after time after time as we lost because of sloppy play, head scratching turnovers, and missed free throws. It never stopped me from getting there an hour early and getting the best seats in the house.

The bottom line is this: This is CLEMSON. We are different. We are special. We are supposed to have the best fans in the country. Not just for football, not just against Duke or UNC, not just when we are winning, ALL THE FRIGGIN TIME. Period. The excuses being made by the students epitomizes fans of Miami, Georgia Tech, the coots, and the vast majority of this horrendously spoiled and entitled millennial generation. "let's only show up for big games...let's only go if we are winning...man that game sure did suck, we almost lost..." I could go on and on and on.

I hate to say it, and I'm not a "holier than thou" type, but the ugly truth is that kids these days feel a sense of entitlement to everything, and supporting the basketball team is no exception. They will only go if we play a good team. They will only go if we are winning. They will only go if our style of play is exciting. They won't go if the game is too late. Or too early. Or on a Saturday. Or during a week where they have a test. Or if its raining. Or too cold. Or if they can't get cellphone service in LJ. Or with a fox or in a box nor here nor there nor anywhere, they will not go to the games Sam-I-Am.

There are some 18,000 students at Clemson. That's enough to fill Littlejohn almost twice with students alone. Yet they can't even fill out the lower student sections! I blamed the administration for poor promotion of the games while I was in school, so it's not 100% on the students. But the excuses have to stop.

So please students, just go to the friggin basketball games. You have free tickets. You live close by. You have hardly any other obligations. Just go. You may not appreciate them now, but once you are gone, you're gonna wish you did.

End Rant. Go Tigers

Just playing devil's advocate, but are they supposed to be students or fans? I remember when I was getting my engineering degree that I had absolutely no time to go to sporting events, even on a weekend.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Good point...but again....

Mar 1, 2015, 2:28 AM

get real. Should students be EXPECTED to go to EVERY SINGLE basketball game? Absolutely not.

I wasn't an engineering student myself, but many of my friends and acquaintances were. Taking a couple of hours (literally, 2 hours) a week to go to a basketball game is not going to cause you to flunk out of school. Come on

As I said before. There are 18,000 students on campus. They should be able to fill out the 500-1000 seats in the lower section. Just my 2 cents

Re: Good point...but again....

Mar 1, 2015, 3:28 AM

Then by all means let all the kids who want to just get by go to the games. I went to the games when I could, but college isn't just about not flunking out.

Mar 1, 2015, 10:01 AM

Clemson home basketball game, neither did most of my engineering student friends. It is called managing your time. I might stay up a little longer if I had a test the next day, but I was there every game.

The only on campus resident engineering students I knew that didn't go to basketball games were students who didn't attend any of our sporting events, which every school has some.

Lots of good students in tough majors at Duke, UNC, ND, etc... have no problem making it to all their school's sporting events.

I can remember supporting the bball program and going to games. But I also remember having to miss many games due to studying for tests. I usually attended the Saturday games if I stayed in campus for the weekend. But I also remember going to less games when I moved off campus.

Well I was a football manager so I was at every football game, but I never missed a home game for Basketball or baseball my whole college career. It's called time management. And yes I graduated.

minor and didn't miss a home basketball game with the exceptions of Duke and UNC because I couldn't get a ticket (thanks to the entitlement attitude).

Your time management was awful if you couldn't make time to go to a game, so don't even attempt to make that an excuse.

badge-donor-05yr.jpgmilitary_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Try time management.

Mar 2, 2015, 7:34 AM [ in reply to Re: Apologies in advance since I don't normally do this.... ]

From 77-81 I stood in line - sometimes hours to get into LJ for best seats.
I took books, studied while in line and at times during halftime. Like another person wrote, I got up 30 minutes earlier and stayed up a little later than normal to compensate. I was up at 6 on weekends and got a lot done before the sleepy heads woke up.
It is about time management and priorities.

My roommate went to med school and I went on to grad school. We got it done.

Most excuses being thrown around do not hold water IMO anyway.

Mar 3, 2015, 3:21 AM [ in reply to Re: Apologies in advance since I don't normally do this.... ]

Looking back, I guess I should have prefaced this with I was married and had an 18 month old when I started my degree (got a B.S. in Health & Exercise Science from Furman beforehand). My comments and situation do no apply to the typical Clemson student. I grew up 20 miles from Clemson and have been a fan since I went to my first Clemson-Duke basketball game when I was 6 weeks old. I went to the games when I could with my family who have season tickets for football, basketball, and baseball. Time management gets a little more difficult when you have a family and more responsibilities than just being a college student. For my son's first 4 years, I only saw him and my wife for a 1-2 hours a day right before and during dinner, except on the weekends which I always took off so I could spend time with them.

Clemson is bringing in a different breed of student

Mar 1, 2015, 8:56 AM

Than 20 and even 10 yrs ago. Not as many are interested in non-FB sports as before.
The new arena will put a certain number students on side court low which will increase excitement, hopefully the product will continue to improve.

However, if you are a student and on TNET, you should obviously have enough fandom to prioritize going to games.

Is there any kind of program in place to reward students

Mar 1, 2015, 11:51 AM

who show up for the many non-prime games or who show support and help fill stands for the non-revenue program events?

We have the technology in place to account for individual students attending each and every athletic event. Can that be utilized to better fill seats when our teams need it the most?

For instance, show up for Winthrop and Oakland basketball and you've got a prime student spot for UNC and Syracuse without having to wait in line. Mix in soccer, softball, baseball, tennis, whatever... accumulate points and get rewarded with hassle-free, prime access to the bigger contests, as well as preferred seating. Add extra points for showing up to football games earlier... all of this can be accounted for and put to use to incentivize better, more productive attendance.

Iptay could augment something like this to offer those recent graduates who showed extra athletics support while in school extra perks with their initial post-grad membership.

2024 purple level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

This is a good idea

Mar 1, 2015, 12:10 PM

They had something like this in place while I was a student, but they kept changing the policy every year and it got to the point where I couldn't even keep up with it.

I went to all the football and basketball games, and most of the soccer and baseball games. I don't think I was ever rewarded (except for the enjoyment of watching the Tigers play for free, that is!)

Students not showing up is nothing new. The students don't care for basketball, its that simple. Its why these folks on here are making excuses for style of play or record for their reasoning...its because basketball and Clemson are not enough for them to show up. We have had several solid years in a row in comparison to our history and no one even realizes that. They don't care, they want to be entertained to how they think they should be entertained.

I think part of the reason for the student malaise is that.

Mar 3, 2015, 7:43 AM

with the advent of all the electronic gadgets, many of them grew up on computer games, instead of playing real sports. So, they don't get into it like we old timers did. I still remember being in LJ during Tree Rollins freshman year, last home game of the season, and dunking was still outlawed. Marvin Dickerson broke away on a fast break and jammed one home, the roof nearly came off the place. Sad to think that many of the "Me, Now" generation will never be able to have that kind of passion about anything other than themselves.
