AP top 7 quality of opponent records...

Oct 3, 2016, 10:45 PM

Just for giggles, I took a look at the AP top 7 teams to see the win/loss record of the teams they have beaten to get an idea of the quality competition these top 7 teams have faced. Here is what I found:

Alabama is 5-0; whose defeated teams combined record is 11-14
Ohio State is 4-0; whose defeated teams combined record is 9-10
Clemson is 5-0; whose defeated teams combined record is 15-9
Michigan is 5-0; whose defeated teams combined record is 16-9
Washington is 5-0; whose defeated teams combined record is 11-13
Houston is 5-0; whose defeated teams combined record is 10-12
Louisville is 4-1; whose defeated teams combined record is 7-12

A further breakdown shows that:
Alabama has beaten 2 teams with winning records and 3 teams with losing records
Ohio State has beaten 1 team with a winning record, 1 team with an even record, and 2 teams with losing records
Clemson has beaten 4 teams with winning records and 1 team with a losing record
Michigan has beaten 3 teams with winning records and 2 teams with losing records
Washington has beaten 1 team with a winning record and 4 teams with losing records
Houston has beaten 1 team with a winning record, 2 teams with even records, and 2 teams with losing records
Louisville has beaten 1 team with a winning record and 3 teams with losing records

Looking at this Clemson and Michigan are the the only top 7 teams to have beaten teams that are predominately "winners" thus far in the season.

If I were ranking the teams based on the above records I would have the current top 7 as follows:
1. Clemson
2. Michigan
3. Alabama
4. Houston
5. Washington
6. Ohio State
7. Louisville

I know the rankings don't amount to a hill of beans at this point but looking at the above I really think Ohio State is currently "over-rated" based on the quality of defeated opponents - no way they should be ranked number 2. Both Clemson and Michigan have beaten higher quality opponents than Ohio State.

Michigan has played all 5 games at home.

Also, you'd have to consider who those teams actually beat or loss to in order to get the fullness.

Without even looking I can tell you Clemson would remain at #1.
